March 25, 2012 was the 101st anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in New York City, which killed 146 workers, mostly young immigrant women. Many of them jumped to their deaths from the 10-story factory to escape the fire because they were locked inside.
While the Triangle fire is a prominent part of labor history, not just for its tragedy but as the impetus for new labor laws and workplace safety reforms, there is no permanent memorial.
Yesterday, the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition, a nationwide coalition of organizations and individuals committed to honoring the victims, launched its international design search for the Triangle Fire Memorial.
A ceremony took place from yesterday afternoon at Washington Place and Greene Street in lower Manhattan and included family members of the victims, union leaders and city and state officials.
The New York City Labor Chorus, with 75 members representing over 20 labor unions and District Councils, was founded in 1991. It promotes union solidarity by expressing through song the history and ongoing struggles of workers for economic and social justice. Their dynamic repertoire combines the power and culture of union music with the great gospel, jazz, classical and folk traditions.
Solidarity Forever, written by Ralph Chaplin in 1915, is perhaps the most famous union anthem. It is sung to the tune of John Brown's Body and is inspired by The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Although it was written as a song for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), other union movements, such as the AFL-CIO, have adopted the song as their own. The song has been performed in recent years by musicians such as the late Utah Phillips, and was redone by Emcee Lynx and The Nightwatchman. It is still commonly sung at union meetings and rallies in the United States, Australia and Canada, and has also been sung at conferences of the Australian Labor Party and the Canadian New Democratic Party. This may have also inspired the hymn of the consumer cooperative movement, The Battle Hymn of Cooperation, which is sung to the same tune.

'The Stars and Stripes Forever' was composed by John Philip Sousa in 1897. The march is widely considered his greatest work, and was made the official march of the United States in 1987. Today, the march is widely know and loved by Americans.
John Philip Sousa, know as America's March King, is widely known as the greatest composer of American military marches. He served in the US Marine Corps and the US Navy.

Women entered the workforce in huge numbers, and for a lot of people, the battles raged through their towns, cities, and even their homes.

Chris Matthews remembers former New York Governor Hugh Carey
Let me finish tonight with a few words about one of the two great Irish Americans to come to office in that exciting American election of 1960.
One was John F. Kennedy. The other was Hugh Carey of New York.
Hugh Carey was the man, who as governor of New York, saved New York City from financial collapse. He did it with brains, guts, heart and common sense. He saw a city - a great city - that had lost its way - and through tough, unpleasant but necessary steps won back its good sense - and, yes, its credit rating. He made the cuts that needed to be made, raised the taxes and put things back together. He even got a Republican president to change his mind about New York, a president who had basically told the city to drop dead.
Today, New York is the most vital city in the United States - a more exciting, safer city than its ever been. Every young person I know wants to live there. Hugh Carey started that. He's the one who did it.
He did something else for which he will always be remembered by Irish Americans.
It was he, along with Tip O'Neill, Ted Kennedy and Pat Moynihan who ended - for all times I hope - American support for the violence in Northern Ireland. They were the famed Four Horsemen - named for Knute Rockne's Notre Dame backfield - who started what ended with the Good Friday accord and with that the end to The Troubles - the time of horror that had the Irish killing each other for too many years.
Hugh Carey, the man who saved New York, the last of the Four Horsemen, not, I hope the last Irish-American politician. Because he was tough, because he was truly and bravely honest, because he had guts, because he never lost his faith, because, as he said, he was always under-estimated, he gives every big-city politician - and every background - someone to be truly and forever proud of.
I wish his family and all his friends my warmest love on their loss of this great leader - and pretty good singer - who meant so much to us all.
I loved it when Mayor Ed Koch called him the greatest New York governor of modern times.

May 14, 1897*The Stars and Stripes Forever *John Philip Sousa's March
The Stars and Stripes Forever is a patriotic American march widely considered to be the magnum opus of composer John Philip Sousa. By a 1987 act of the U.S. Congress, it is the official National March of the United States of America.
In his autobiography, Marching Along, Sousa wrote that he composed the march on Christmas Day, 1896. He was on an ocean liner on his way home from a vacation with his wife in Europe and had just learned of the recent death of David Blakely, the manager of the Sousa Band. He composed the march in his head and committed the notes to paper on arrival in the United States. It was first performed at Willow Grove Park, just outside Philadelphia, on May 14, 1897, and was immediately greeted with enthusiasm.

Following WWE's Extreme Rules Pay-Per-View in 2011, Stars and Stripes Forever played following John Cena announcing the death of Osama Bin Laden.
In Argentina, a sensationalist news channel Crónica TV always uses part of this march as a background music on reporting a breaking news.

After acquiring his second degree in music production Evan has since traveled around the world more times that he can count, singing in over 100 countries. Stonewall Forever - A Documentary about the Past, Present and Future of Pride
Stonewall Forever is a documentary from NYC’s LGBT Community Center directed by Ro Haber. The film brings together voices from over 50 years of the LGBTQ rights movement to explore queer activism before, during and after the Stonewall Riots.
The history of the Stonewall Riots is equally as cherished as it is charged. There are questions of who was there, who “threw the first brick” and who can claim Stonewall. This film doesn’t answer these questions but instead it aims to expand the story of Stonewall by including more voices in its telling.
Stonewall Forever brings together queer activists, experienced and new, to look at the movement for LGBTQ equality before, during and after Stonewall. It highlights trans people, people of color and homeless people who were at the forefront of the movement, and who have often been erased from the narrative. It explores how the activism of today stands on the shoulders of the activists who have come before. And it asks us all to recognize the legacy of Stonewall that remains today, when the struggle for queer rights is far from over.
Stonewall Forever was directed by Ro Haber and created by a predominantly queer and trans cast and crew who are proud to be a part of preserving this legacy.

Live Updates: Kobe Bryant killed in helicopter crash
Kobe Bryant, a five-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers who is considered one of the greatest basketball players of all-time, died in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles on Sunday, the City of Calabasas said. He was 41.
How W.E.B. Du Bois Changed Forever the Way Americans Think About Themselves (2000)
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born on February 23, 1868, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to Alfred and Mary Silvina (née Burghardt) Du Bois. Mary Silvina Burghardt's family was part of the very small free black population of Great Barrington, having long owned land in the state; she was descended from Dutch, African and English ancestors. William Du Bois's maternal great-grandfather was Tom Burghardt, a slave (born in West Africa around 1730) who was held by the Dutch colonist Conraed Burghardt. Tom briefly served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, which may have been how he gained his freedom. Tom's son Jack Burghardt was the father of Othello Burghardt, who was the father of Mary Silvina Burghardt.
William Du Bois's paternal great-grandfather was an ethnic French-American, James Du Bois of Poughkeepsie, New York, who fathered several children with slave mistresses.[5] One of James' mixed-race sons was Alexander, who traveled to Haiti, and fathered a son, Alfred, with a mistress there. Alexander returned to Connecticut, leaving Alfred in Haiti with his mother.[6] Alfred moved to the United States sometime before 1860, and married Mary Silvina Burghardt on February 5, 1867, in Housatonic, Massachusetts.[6] Alfred left Mary in 1870, two years after William was born.[7] William's mother worked to support her family (receiving some assistance from her brother and neighbors), until she experienced a stroke in the early 1880s. She died in 1885.[8]
Great Barrington's primarily European American community treated Du Bois generally well. He attended the local integrated public school and played with white schoolmates, though the racism he experienced even in this context would be one of the subjects of his later adult writing. Teachers encouraged his intellectual pursuits, and his rewarding experience with academic studies led him to believe that he could use his knowledge to empower African Americans.[9] When Du Bois decided to attend college, the congregation of his childhood church, the First Congregational Church of Great Barrington, donated money for his tuition.
Relying on money donated by neighbors, Du Bois attended Fisk University, a historically black college in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1885 to 1888.[12] His travel to and residency in the South was Du Bois's first experience with Southern racism, which encompassed Jim Crow laws, bigotry, and lynchings.[13] After receiving a bachelor's degree from Fisk, he attended Harvard College (which did not accept course credits from Fisk) from 1888 to 1890, where he was strongly influenced by his professor William James, prominent in American philosophy.[14] Du Bois paid his way through three years at Harvard with money from summer jobs, an inheritance, scholarships, and loans from friends. In 1890, Harvard awarded Du Bois his second bachelor's degree, cum laude, in history.[15] In 1891, Du Bois received a scholarship to attend the sociology graduate school at Harvard.[16]
In 1892, Du Bois received a fellowship from the John F. Slater Fund for the Education of Freedmen to attend the University of Berlin for graduate work.[17] While a student in Berlin, he traveled extensively throughout Europe. He came of age intellectually in the German capital, while studying with some of that nation's most prominent social scientists, including Gustav von Schmoller, Adolph Wagner and Heinrich von Treitschke.[18] After returning from Europe, Du Bois completed his graduate studies; in 1895 he was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University.[19]
In the summer of 1894, Du Bois received several job offers, including one from the prestigious Tuskegee Institute; he accepted a teaching job at Wilberforce University in Ohio.[21] At Wilberforce, Du Bois was strongly influenced by Alexander Crummell, who believed that ideas and morals are necessary tools to effect social change.[22] While at Wilberforce, Du Bois married Nina Gomer, one of his students, on May 12, 1896.[23]
After two years at Wilberforce, Du Bois accepted a one-year research job from the University of Pennsylvania as an assistant in sociology in the summer of 1896.[24] He performed sociological field research in Philadelphia's African-American neighborhoods, which formed the foundation for his landmark study, The Philadelphia Negro, published two years later while he was teaching at Atlanta University. It was the first case study of a black community.

A crucial vote is anticipated Jan. 31 on whether to call witnesses in the Trump impeachment trial, including former national security adviser John Bolton. In a manuscript of his new book, Bolton reportedly says that Trump directly tied the holdup of nearly $400 million in military assistance to Ukraine to investigations of the Bidens.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.
