Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue is a major thoroughfare in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It stretches north from Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village to West 143rd Street in Harlem. It is considered one of the most expensive and elegant streets in the world.
5th Avenue was originally only a narrower thoroughfare but the section south of Central Park was widened in 1908, sacrificing its wide sidewalks to accommodate the increasing traffic. The midtown blocks, now famously commercial, were largely a residential area until the turn of the 20th century. The first commercial building on Fifth Avenue was erected by Benjamin Altman who bought the corner lot on the northeast corner of 34th Street in 1896. In 1906 his department store, B. Altman and Company, occupied the whole of its block front. The result was the creation of a high-end shopping district that attracted fashionable women and the upscale stores that wished to serve them. Lord & Taylor's flagship store was once located on Fifth Avenue near the Empire State Building and the New York Public Library, but has since closed.
In the 1920s, traffic towers controlled important intersections from 14th to 59th Streets.

The city's fast pace has inspired the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. If greater New York City were a sovereign state, it would have the 12th highest GDP in the world. New York is home to the highest number of billionaires of any city in the world.
New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York was the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790, and has been the largest US city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the U.S. by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is an international symbol of the U.S. and its ideals of liberty and peace. In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entrepreneurship, social tolerance, and environmental sustainability, and as a symbol of freedom and cultural diversity. In 2019, New York was voted the greatest city in the world per a survey of over 30,000 people from 48 cities worldwide, citing its cultural diversity.

STORYLINE
Tens of thousands of people gathered in New York's Rockefeller Center on Tuesday night to watch the lighting of the country's most famous Christmas tree, just days after a bomb scare at a tree lighting in Oregon.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg helped turn on the 30-thousand energy-efficient lights decorating the Rockefeller Christmas tree following performances by Sheryl Crow, Josh Groban, British singer Katherine Jenkins, and teen pop star Charice.
Jessica Simpson has previously performed a duet with Petty Officer John Britt and they took to the stage once again on Tuesday.
We did this thing called 'Truman Idol' and I chose him to come sing with me tonight and so he got to come about three weeks early and be with his family, Simpson said.
The 74-foot (22.5 metre) Norway spruce, donated by Peter and Stephanie Acton of Mahopac, New York state, will be on view until the January 7.
Peter, a firefighter and rescue worker on 11 September, 2001, when the World Trade Center was attacked, said providing the tree is his way of saying thank you to the city of New York.
The people of New York were amazing to firefighters and the police officers. This is a great thank you to New York. It's a thank you to the people of the United States, Peter said, who appeared with his wife, Stephanie, and children, Seamus and Fiona.
I haven't forgotten about that and I just ask that the rest of America doesn't forget about us and the guys that are hurting, he continued.
The event took place less than a week after the arrest of a 19-year-old Somali-American man charged in an alleged plot to blow up a car bomb at an Oregon Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland.
New York City police prepared for the sizable crowd by blocking off streets and urging people to use mass transit instead of cars to get there.
The annual tree lighting, in its 78th year, is a highlight of a season of wonderment for sightseers and exasperation for anyone trying to get to work.

From Wikipedia:
Midtown Manhattan is the central portion of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to some of the city's most iconic buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, the headquarters of the United Nations, Grand Central Terminal, and Rockefeller Center, as well as Broadway and Times Square.
Midtown Manhattan is the largest central business district in the world and ranks among the most expensive pieces of real estate; Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan commands the world's highest retail rents, with average annual rents at US$3,000 per square foot ($32,000/m2) in 2017. However, due to the high price of retail spaces in Midtown, there are also many vacant storefronts in the neighborhood. Midtown is the country's largest commercial, entertainment, and media center, and also a growing financial center.
The majority of New York City's skyscrapers, including its tallest hotels and apartment towers, are in Midtown. The area hosts commuters and residents working in its offices, hotels, and retail establishments, tourists and students. Times Square, the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, is a major center of the world's entertainment industry. Sixth Avenue also has the headquarters of three of the four major U.S. television networks.
Midtown is part of Manhattan Community District 5. It is patrolled by the 14th and 18th Precincts of the New York City Police Department.

Liberty Island, Lower Manhattan & The Rockefeller - Christmas in New York City (NYC) Day 3
18TH DECEMBER – DAY 8
Today was probably the busiest day so far – we started with a cruise to Liberty Island to view the infamous Lady Liberty up close and had tickets to the podium (no tickets to the crown were available unfortunately). As we were already in lower Manhattan we headed on towards Wall St and explored the financial district – en route to grab our very first milkshake from Shake Shack we passed Ground Zero so stopped off there to see the memorial. After a quick (unhealthy) lunch, we headed to Chinatown, Little Italy and Soho where we grabbed a classic NYC pizza and rushed off to see the Christmas carol service at St Patrick’s cathedral. We ended the day by visiting the Top of the Rock for some awesome views and also to visit the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree :)

Rockefeller Center is a complex of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres (89,000 m2) between 48th and 51st streets in New York City, United States. Built by the Rockefeller family, it is located in the center of Midtown Manhattan, spanning the area between Fifth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
The Empire State Building is a 103-story skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. It has a roof height of 1,250 feet (381 meters), and with its antenna spire included, it stands a total of 1,454 ft (443.2 m) high. Its name is derived from the nickname for New York, the Empire State. It stood as the world's tallest building for nearly 40 years, from its completion in early 1931 until the topping out of the World Trade Center's North Tower in late 1970. Following the September 11 attacks in 2001, the Empire State Building was again the tallest building in New York (although it was no longer the tallest in the US or the world), until One World Trade Center reached a greater height on April 30, 2012. The Empire State Building is currently the fourth-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States (after the One World Trade Center, the Willis Tower and Trump International Hotel and Tower, both in Chicago), and the 23rd-tallest in the world (the tallest now is Burj Khalifa, located in Dubai). It is also the fourth-tallest freestanding structure in the Americas.
