Emperor Norton
visit owlandtwine.com to sign up for our newsletter and see the images discussed in the podcast.
A for kids history podcast in 10 minutes. This week the emperor of America, Edward Norton. Hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle to the New York Times. Edward Norton was a visionary of the gold rush who made decrees from equal rights to building the Bay Bridge. Lauded as the only emperor to shed no blood.
Emperor Norton the King of America
Did you know America had a king? This is one of my favorite stories in history and it happened in San Francisco California in the late 1880’s. The reason this is one of my favorite tales from history is that usually when someone decides they are going to grab for power they are usually doing it for POWER. There is a fight of varying degrees of awful for everyone involved. This is not that story. Emperor Norton was a visionary and you will see his vision for this country and the state of California was ahead of its’ time. This is a story of a fortune lost, some very good ideas, a two VERY good dogs, and a dear friend named Mark Twain
Joshua Norton was born in 1818 or 1819 in Britain migrating to San Francisco for the gold rush in 1849. He invested heavily in real estate growing a $40,000 investment into a quarter of a million dollars. Due to a bad deal in rice he became bankrupted and disappeared for a small while.
When he came back he came bak in a big way. On September 17, 1859, a most unusual decree appeared in the San Francisco Bulletin newspaper. In grandiloquent fashion, the message stated, “At the peremptory request and desire of a large majority of the citizens…I, Joshua Norton…declare and proclaim myself Emperor of these United States.” It went on to command representatives from all the states to convene in the Bay Area, “to make such alterations in the existing laws of the Union as may ameliorate the evils under which the country is laboring.” The edict was signed, “NORTON I, Emperor of the United States.”
Mr. Norton was usually dressed in an epaulette-adorned Navy coat, an ostrich feather-plumed hat and occasionally carrying a military saber, the delightfully eccentric “Emperor Norton I”He lived by the kindest of restaurants that would take the currency he made. Many of the citizens would bow and tourists would collect his currency as a keepsake. There were Emperor Norton dolls. Theatre owners would save him a seat for opening nights. San Francisco’s directory listed his occupation as Emperor. The San Francisco newspapers knew they had found gold and would print each of the emperor’s proclamations with great fanfare. . When an overzealous police officer once dared to arrest the Emperor on charges of vagrancy, the city’s newspapers responded with outrage. One writer defended him as a local institution, arguing, “since he has worn the Imperial purple [he] has shed no blood, robbed nobody, and despoiled the country of no one, which is more than can be said for his fellows in that line.” The Emperor was quickly released, and from then on, the city’s lawmen saluted whenever they encountered him on the street.
In October 1859, declared, “fraud and corruption prevent a fair and proper expression of the public voice…in consequence of which, we do hereby abolish Congress.”
He's talking about how African-Americans should have the right to attend public schools, ride public streetcars. How the Chinese should be able to have their testimony heard in court, Lumea says. Norton also argued for the rights of Native Americans and against political corruption. (KQED)
In the 1870’s he asked for funds to build a bridge between San Francisco and Oakland. The Bay Bridge was built in 1936.
During Edward Norton’s reign Mark Twain worked as a journalist for the San Francisco papers. Mr. Twain was inspired by the emperor modeling the “king” in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn after him.
The emperor was said to spend his days in the library, playing chess, at religious services , or going for walks with the cities most famous dogs: Bummer and Lazarus. If you hav not yet heard I Can’t Believe That Happened episode on Bummer and Lazarus go to our show notes and click on the link.
When Emperor Norton dies in 1880 he was hailed as far as The New York Times as The great emperor of America for more then 20 years. The headline of his obituary in the San Francisco Chronicle read, Le roi est mort. More than 10,000 people attended his funeral.

10. The McDonalds Map
As you know, maps can be used to illustrate many types of interesting data, but perhaps none as important as this one, which shows how far you are away from a McDonalds. Yes, that’s right, those Golden Arches aren’t too far away from you no matter where you are in the continental United States, and with more than 13,000 restaurants you are never more than 115 miles away from one. Can you guess where that might be???
9. Fleas
America is a nation of animal lovers, with more than 78 million dogs and 85.8 million cats being kept as pets, let alone the numerous other creatures that keep their human companions company. Along with our favourite friends, though, come unwanted companions, like fleas. They can transmit diseases to animals and humans, and can be an irritating presence in the home. They, like other insects, are more active during certain weather conditions, though, and this is where this next map comes in.
8. Murder and Manslaughter
Murder and Manslaughter are, unfortunately, things that happen around the world, and the US is no different. You may be surprised to know the areas with the highest mortality rates due to these reasons, though, and, conversely, the places that are the safest.
7. Home Ownership
Home ownership is one of the pillars of the American dream. Sure, not everyone aspires to buying their own house, but a lot of Americans do. This first map shows the areas where home ownership is highest and lowest, based on data from the last census. For the purposes of gathering the information, ownership is defined as where the person or people who own a property also live in it. The darker the colour blue, the higher the percentage.
6. Chlamydia
Sexually transmitted diseases are a part of modern life but, despite the warnings and efforts at preventing their spread, an estimated 20 million Americans contract a new infection every year. At any one time, it’s thought that 110 million residents in the US has an STD, with Chlamydia being by far the most common.
5. Gun Ownership
Gun ownership is a right protected by the Second Amendment, and you don’t need me to tell you the controversy over this right now. There’s no denying it, though, America is a nation of gun lovers- more so than any other country in the planet- but it’s not the case in every state. 30 % of American adults say they own a gun, and this map shows the percentage of people who live in each state that have at least one. While some numbers may seem obvious, others are quite surprising.
4. Most Remembered States
It’s the dreaded test that every school child faces, to name as many of the states as they can. With 50 to choose from, there are a number of ways to remember them all, if you want you can look up the song!! How many can you remember off the top of your head??
3. Poverty
Across America, 12.4 % of residents are classified as living in poverty. While many more may experience financial hardship, this is a definition linked to disposable income and the ability to maintain what is seen as a reasonable standard of living. Living in poverty in the US, means households that live on less than $2 per day before government benefits.
2. Immigration
America was built on immigration, and our nation is comprised of an amazing blend of people and cultures from around the world. With so much talk of the issue at the moment, it may surprise you where the majority of immigrants for each state come from. This map shows you in more detail. More than 500,000 immigrants move to the US each year, and they contribute to the country in countless ways.
1. Racial Dot Map
This final map aims to show the geographic distribution, population density, and racial diversity of people in America based upon data collected in the most recent Census. The image is generated by placing one dot on the map for each person, each being colour coded by race. This not only shows where the highest population centres are, but also the cultural make-up of the people who live there.

Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 31, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
A crucial vote is anticipated Jan. 31 on whether to call witnesses in the Trump impeachment trial, including former national security adviser John Bolton. In a manuscript of his new book, Bolton reportedly says that Trump directly tied the holdup of nearly $400 million in military assistance to Ukraine to investigations of the Bidens.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.

Senate Impeachment Trial Of President Trump - Day 10 | NBC News (Live Stream)
Rescue of a Scared Homeless Dog with a Broken Heart
Rescue of scared homeless dog, heartbroken and sad, living on the cold streets. This sweet old dog was found roaming near a railroad station. It was too risky to attempt a rescue there, we were worried that he could run and get hit by a passing train, so we followed him, trying to redirect him towards a safer place. It was quite a marathon as he ran away each time we approached him. But he eventually understood we are only trying to help him, or maybe the smell of the yummy treats finally reached his nose. He was limping and we also noticed a scar near his left eye so we took him straight to the veterinary clinic. When we scanned him for a microchip we discovered that he had an owner! We hoped a happy dog-owner reunion would follow, but when we contacted the registered owner he told us he does not want the dog back and asked us to take him. Apparently, Bobi (this is the name given by his owner) ran away from home and traveled quite a long distance, being found approximately 10 miles away from his home. We’ll never know why he left home and why he wasn’t wanted anymore, but we do not want to judge anyone, we’re just thankful that we were able to save him.
Bobi is 9 years old, medium sized, approximately 18 kg (39 lbs), fully vaccinated, microchipped, neutered. His vision is completely lost in the left eye, an old scar located near the eye indicates that he had been injured there, possibly hit, so that’s how he lost his sight in that eye. But the good news is that vision in the right eye is not affected and he sees well with it.
He’s very gentle, loving and obedient and he is still playful and curious. It's like he's living now the puppyhood he missed.
Bobi is an old dog in his golden years and he needs a caring adoptive family to offer him a home, a FOREVER home this time, where he can spend his remaining years happy and loved. He is in Howl Of A Dog’s care in Romania, but please note that we also allow international adoptions and he can travel to the USA, Canada or Europe.
To adopt Bobi please check our adoption procedure here: Thank you!
*UPDATE: Bobi was adopted !!! After a journey of over 4600 miles from Romania to the US, our brave Bobi arrived at his new home in Delaware, United States and is now finally living the happy life he so much deserves. Thank you very much everyone for watching and sharing Bobi’s rescue video and for sending him so many good thoughts and best wishes! Here is a short video of Bobi's first week at his forever home: . Kiribati: a drowning paradise in the South Pacific | DW Documentary
Climate change and rising sea levels mean the island nation of Kiribati in the South Pacific is at risk of disappearing into the sea.
But the island’s inhabitants aren’t giving up. They are doing what they can to save their island from inundation. Can COP23 help make a difference?
UN estimates indicate that Kiribati could disappear in just 30 or 40 years. That’s because the average elevation is less than two meters above sea level. And some of the knock-on effects of climate change have made the situation more difficult. Kiribati can hardly be surpassed in terms of charm and natural beauty. There are 33 atolls and one reef island – spread out over an area of 3.5 million square kilometers. All have white, sandy beaches and blue lagoons. Kiribati is the world’s largest state that consists exclusively of atolls. A local resident named Kaboua points to the empty, barren land around him and says, There used to be a large village here with 70 families. But these days, this land is only accessible at low tide. At high tide, it's all under water. Kaboua says that sea levels are rising all the time, and swallowing up the land. That’s why many people here build walls made of stone and driftwood, or sand or rubbish. But these barriers won't stand up to the increasing number of storm surges. Others are trying to protect against coastal erosion by planting mangrove shrubs or small trees. But another local resident, Vasiti Tebamare, remains optimistic. She works for KiriCAN, an environmental organization. Vasiti says: The industrialized countries -- the United States, China, and Europe -- use fossil fuels for their own ends. But what about us? Kiribati's government has even bought land on an island in Fiji, so it can evacuate its people in an emergency. But Vasiti and most of the other residents don't want to leave.

Senate Impeachment Trial Of President Trump | Day 1 | NBC News (Live Stream Recording)
Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 22, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
After a debate on the rules of the trial, opening arguments start Jan. 22 in the Senate. After opening arguments, senators will have 16 hours to ask questions in writing. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. will read the questions out loud, and the appropriate side — defense or prosecution — can answer them.
President Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
