Overview
---------------------------------------------------------------------
No trip to New York City is complete without paying your respects to the lives lost during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Located on the former sight of the World Trade Center in the heart of Manhattan's famed Financial District, Ground Zero is being rebuilt with a memorial and six new skyscrapers set to be completed by 2011 and 2014 respectively.
History
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Construction on the World Trade Center complex began in 1966 and was finished in 1972. It was designed by American architect Minoru Yamasaki and developed by the Port Authority of New York City. The complex consisted of seven buildings, but the most notable were the Twin Towers, which were each 110 stories tall (1,350 feet). The complex housed over 500 companies from 86 different nations. On a typical workday, 50,000 people worked in the towers which became a symbol of American capitalism the world over.
September 11, 2001
---------------------------------------------------------------------
On the morning of September 11, 2001, terrorists crashed two U.S. commercial jetliners into the towers, killing 2,982 people. American Airlines flight 11 crashed into the northern facade of the north tower at 8:46 a.m., striking between the 93rd and 99th floors. Seventeen minutes later, United Airlines flight 175 impacted into the south tower, between the 77th and 85th floors. At 9:59 a.m., the south tower collapsed after burning for approximately 56 minutes. The north tower collapsed at 10:28, after burning for approximately 102 minutes. At 5:20 p.m., 7 World Trade Center collapsed due to damaged infrastructure and uncontrolled fires. These attacks marked the beginning of an international War on Terror which commenced with the US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq. The attacks' mastermind, Osama Bin Laden, was finally killed by U.S. forces on May 2, 2011 in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
Memorial
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center Foundation began formal operations in the spring of 2005 in conjunction with the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation on the design and construction management plan. The names of the 2,982 victims of the 9/11 attacks, as well as the six victims of the February 26, 1993 bombing, are inscribed on bronze panels lining two reflecting pools. The surrounding plaza is filled with oak trees and a callery pear known as the Survivor Tree, which was nursed back to health after surviving the 9/11 attacks. The Memorial opened on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the Memorial's Museum will open in September 2012. Visitors must reserve advance passes to both the Memorial and Museum for a specific date and time. Passes are free and will be available through the Memorial's reservation system. The reservation system is made available at 911memorial.org starting in the summer of 2011.
Reconstruction
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Five new skyscrapers (Towers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5), a World Trade Center Transportation Hub, Retail Complex and Performing Arts Center is planned to be completed by 2014, according to New York City and state officials. The site will feature a collection of works by world-renowned architects Santiago Calatrava, David Childs, Norman Foster, Frank Gehry, Fumihiko Maki and Richard Rogers.

It was a tragedy that claimed the lives of thousands in an instant, and later brought two wars with an even more devastating death toll. The United States is marking a decade since the 9/11 attacks. Terrorists crashed hijacked planes into the twin towers of the World Trade centre in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. A forth plane came down in the state of Pennsylvania. Remembrance ceremonies are being held at Ground Zero in New York, and all across America.

【September 11 attacks】
The September 11 attacks (also referred to as 9/11)[a] were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda[3][4][5] against the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The attacks resulted in 2,977 victim fatalities, over 25,000 injuries, and caused at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage.[6][7] Additional people have died of 9/11-related cancer and respiratory diseases in the months and years following the attacks.
Four passenger airliners operated by two major U.S. passenger air carriers (United Airlines and American Airlines)—all of which departed from airports in the northeastern United States bound for San Francisco and Los Angeles—were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists. Two of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan. Within an hour and 42 minutes, both 110-story towers collapsed. Debris and the resulting fires caused a partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the World Trade Center complex, including the 47-story 7 World Trade Center tower, as well as significant damage to ten other large surrounding structures. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense) in Arlington County, Virginia, which led to a partial collapse of the building's west side. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was initially flown toward Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after its passengers thwarted the hijackers. 9/11 is the single deadliest terrorist attack in human history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States, with 343 and 72 killed, respectively.[8]
Suspicion quickly fell on al-Qaeda. The United States responded by launching the War on Terror and invading Afghanistan to depose the Taliban, which had failed to comply with U.S. demands to extradite Osama bin Laden and expel al-Qaeda from Afghanistan. Many countries strengthened their anti-terrorism legislation and expanded the powers of law enforcement and intelligence agencies to prevent terrorist attacks. Although Osama bin Laden, al-Qaeda's leader, initially denied any involvement, in 2004 he claimed responsibility for the attacks.[2] Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited U.S. support of Israel, the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives. After evading capture for almost a decade, bin Laden was located in Pakistan and killed by SEAL Team Six of the U.S. Navy in May 2011, during the Obama administration.
The destruction of the World Trade Center and nearby infrastructure seriously harmed the economy of New York City and had a significant effect on global markets, which resulted in the closing of Wall Street until September 17 and the civilian airspace in the U.S. and Canada until September 13. Many closings, evacuations, and cancellations followed, out of respect or fear of further attacks. Cleanup of the World Trade Center site was completed in May 2002, and the Pentagon was repaired within a year. On November 18, 2006, construction of One World Trade Center began at the World Trade Center site. The building opened on November 3, 2014.[9][10] Numerous memorials have been constructed, including the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City, the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington County, Virginia, and the Flight 93 National Memorial in a field in Stonycreek Township near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Although unconfirmed, there are allegations of Saudi Arabian involvement in the attacks.[11] The primary evidence is the content of the 28 redacted pages of the 2002 Joint Inquiry into Intelligence Community Activities before and after the Terrorist Attacks of September 11, 2001, conducted by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. These 28 pages contain information regarding the material and financial assistance given to the hijackers and their affiliates leading up to the attacks by the Saudi Arabian government.[12]
As a consequence of the attacks, the United States has been in a state of national emergency ever since 2001.[13]

The tragedy of September 11, 2001 changed New York and the people of the United States forever. The 9/11 Memorial is one of New York's newest and most solemn sites -- and among the most visited.
Bronze panels, with the names of everyone who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks, surround the pools reminding visitors of the human cost of 9/11. The new Freedom Tower, officially World Trade Center Tower One, is now an icon of the New York cityscape.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is a memorial and museum at the World Trade Center site in New York City, honoring the victims of the September 11 attacks.
One World Trade Center (also known as the Freedom Tower 1 World Trade Center, One WTC and 1 WTC) is the main building of the rebuilt World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan, New York City. It is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, and the sixth-tallest in the world. The supertall structure has the same name as the North Tower of the original World Trade Center, which was completely destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The new skyscraper stands on the northwest corner of the 16-acre (6.5 ha) World Trade Center site, on the site of the original 6 World Trade Center. The building is bounded by West Street to the west, Vesey Street to the north, Fulton Street to the south, and Washington Street to the east.
The building's architect was David Childs, whose firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) also designed the Burj Khalifa and the Willis Tower. The construction of below-ground utility relocations, footings, and foundations for the new building began on April 27, 2006. One World Trade Center became the tallest structure in New York City on April 30, 2012, when it surpassed the height of the Empire State Building. The tower's steel structure was topped out on August 30, 2012. On May 10, 2013, the final component of the skyscraper's spire was installed, making the building, including its spire, reach a total height of 1,776 feet (541 m). Its height in feet is a deliberate reference to the year when the United States Declaration of Independence was signed. The building opened on November 3, 2014.
On March 30, 2009, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) confirmed that the building would be officially known by its legal name of One World Trade Center, rather than its colloquial name of Freedom Tower. The building is 104 standard floors high, but the tower has only 94 actual stories.
The new World Trade Center complex will eventually include five high-rise office buildings built along Greenwich Street, as well as the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, located just south of One World Trade Center where the original Twin Towers stood. The construction of the new building is part of an effort to memorialize and rebuild following the destruction of the original World Trade Center complex.

9/11 National September 11 Memorial, World Trade Center, New York
This is probably the most mournful place in New York and in the United States in general. It is forbidden to play musical instruments! September 11, 2001 was a long time ago, but the memory of the horror that gripped the city is still alive.
Наверное это самое скорбное место в Нью Йорке и в США в общем. Здесь запрещено играть на музыкальных инструментах! 11 сентября 2001 года было уже давно, но память об ужасе охватившем город, жива и сейчас.

It wouldn't matter if he was a housewife, but he has the credentials. The truth is like the Little Dutch boy trying to plug the damn one finger at a time. Without corrupted outside influence it will come out one way or the other.
