The unseen face of meth use
What does a meth user look like? You’re probably not picturing Courtney – and that’s one reason why it’s so important to hear his story.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, meth became the most widely used illicit drug among urban gay men. Early characterizations of the meth problem in the gay community depicted the party boy or the middle-class white man as the prototype of the meth user, says Dr. Perry Halkitis, professor of applied psychology, global public health, and medicine at New York University.
Public health campaigns in the early 2000s targeted white gay meth users as a way of combating the AIDS epidemic. This, Halkitis believes, created a stigma among middle- and upper-class white gay men and pushed the drug underground in the gay community. And while Halkitis says meth use is still common among all subsets of the gay population, a recent study of his found meth now disproportionately affects HIV-positive and African-American gay men.
To make this short, filmmaker Spencer Macnaughton spent weeks of chatting online with many men and attending a Crystal Meth Anonymous meeting at New York's LGBT Community Center, where 38 gay male ex-meth users shared their recovery stories. For more on how this was made, see the article on Vox.com:

50 THINGS TO DO IN NEW YORK CITY | Top Attractions Travel Guide
Our recent week in New York City was an action-packed one. We decided to set ourselves a challenge to see and do as much as we possibly could, and that gave way to this travel video guide which highlights 50 of the top attractions. In a city like New York this means we barely scratched the surface, but hopefully this video will highlight the cornucopia of possibilities that is the Big Apple.

Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Have you been to New York? What are your favorite things about this city? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Flea markets are popular in Moscow
(6 May 2009) SHOTLIST
March 27, 2009 - Moscow, Russia
1. Close up of lamps, bottles and candlesticks
2. Mid of women, pan to stand with Soviet decorative porcelain
3. Close up of iron, Russia, 1920s, 4000 rubles ($120)
4. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Marina Smirnova, festival organiser:
The Flea Market art project has not been affected by the financial crisis. Maybe because people come here not only for business - of course if there were no business success there were no exhibitors - but rather for the atmosphere here. Music of the 40s and 50s, cup of tea offered to every guest, friendly atmosphere and the desire of all exhibitors to tell people the story of the goods they sell - this is essential.
5. Close up of money-box, United States, 1950s, 5000 rubles ($150)
6. Mid of man showing the money-box
7. Close up of photo showing military academy graduates, Russia, 1906, 3100 rubles ($95)

11. Mid of cutlery, tilt up to women picking out spoons and forks 12. Wide of stand selling postcards, posters and magazines

16. Mid of woman selling antiquities from Belgium
17. Close up pan of various items on sale
18. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Olga, collector:
This is a very old plate, it's made of papier-mache. (zoom in plate), Belgium, 15000 rubles ($450). These fleur-de-lis mean that it was made before Napoleon. (zoom out). So it's a very old piece, hand-made and painted by hand and it has been preserved in excellent condition. Such things are very rare.
19. Mid of people talking, zoom in teddy-bear
April 29, 2009 - Moscow, Russia
20. Set up of art expert Natalia Tamruchi in her gallery
21. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Natalia Tamruchi, art expert:
the flea market is a rummage sale, where everything should be sold for next to nothing. It's a rule, it's the law of the flea market. It's not an antique shop, there is a difference between flea markets and antique shops. But here (at the Flea Market Festival) the prices are absolutely antique.
April 26, 2009 - Moscow, Russia
22. Wide pan of flea market at railway station
23. Mid of women shuffling in old clothes
24. Close up of sculptures of dogs
25. Mid of man selling carpet, (in Russian) 200 rubles! Take it! It's chic!
26. Cutaway deer on the carpet
27. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Spartak, carpet seller:
All Muscovites like it. They come here to sell things. These markets shouldn't be closed, they (authorities) should rather open such markets in every city district and we would be happy.
28. Wide of flea market
29. Close up of phones and toys
30. Mid of men looking at things on sale
31. Close up Soviet shoulder straps, 1980s, 70 rubles ($2)
32. Close up of tea pot
LEAD IN :
Flea markets are a part of every self-respecting city.
Berlin, London and Paris have numerous outdoor bazaars that draw thousands of visitors every weekend.
Almost all Moscow's flea markets disappeared in Soviet times when the state heightened repression of private trade and speculation.
Those who broke the law could face long prison terms.
But now flea markets are becoming popular once again.
STORYLINE:
Moscow's Flea Market festival is a treasure trove of artifacts.
Held three times each year, buyers can find everything from china ornaments to cast iron household items.

New York Gum and Dental Implant Specialist Dr. Bernard Fialkoff
Organizes December 9th NYC Dentists Give Back Day to Help NYC Veterans
Queens, NY – Dr. Bernard Fialkoff, a New York City Dental Implant, Periodontal and Laser Surgeon of 39 years organized and formed the NYC Dentists Give Back Group at the September meeting of the Fialkoff Dental Study Club. The group of dentists decided to offer no charge dental exams and cleanings to veterans and those in need of dental care as a Holiday Hanukkah and Christmas gift. They did so to acknowledge the Veterans’ selfless dedication to protect the freedoms we all enjoy in the United States of America.
Dr. Fialkoff states, “US Veterans risked their lives to safeguard our nation. But many go without dental care and are living with pain and suffering from infections caused by the lack of proper dental care.” Only 8% of all US Veterans get care from the VA and worse yet, US veterans account for 12% of the homeless population in the US. Many Veterans are unable to receive dental treatment from the Veterans Administration because of strict inclusion criteria. To help, the NYC Dentists Give Back Group members have organized and will be delivering these no charge services at their respective dental offices throughout all five Boroughs on December 9.
Harlem Globetrotter Robert Hunter, Metro Area Veteran Directors Johnnie Williams and Manuel Rodriguez, Queens Chamber of Commerce Business Development Manager Brendan Leavy, Hispanic Dental Association President Dr. Hanette Gomez, Past Presidents of Queens County Dental Society Dr. Robert Trager, Dr. Robert Shpuntoff and Dr. Maria Torres, both club members, and Dr. Bernard Fialkoff, all pledged themselves to make December 9 NYC Dentists Holiday Gift Give Back Day, a day to remember. The group has a new Facebook site: “New York City Dentists Give Back Group”.
Commissioner James Hendon, NYC Department of Veterans’ Services says, “NYC Department of Veterans Services' Engagement and Community Service team will soon begin to actively spread the word about your event. Also, we will begin to promote the Holiday Humanitarian Day dental services that you are offering on social media. We truly appreciate your generosity in offering one day of free dental services to Veterans and vulnerable members of our society.”
Dr. Fialkoff states, “Each New Yorker is very important to the well being of our city. Life is a group effort and the success of any program begins with the individuals in those groups. Any worthwhile activity begins with individuals and then spreads to family, local groups, the city, the state and then nationally. As community members, we can feel proud of helping our community and improving our city. What better way is there to do this, than help to help the very people who fought for our country’s freedom – our own Veterans.”
Dr. Bernard Fialkoff was Valedictorian of the SUNY at Stony Brook Dental School Class of 1980. He trained and graduated from the Memphis Veterans Administration Hospital Periodontal and Implant Surgical Specialty program in Memphis, Tennessee in 1982, is a distinguished honoree of Pierre Fauchard, as well as a Member of the New York State Dental Association Chemical Dependency Committee.
Dr. Fialkoff’s practice welcomes new patients. The office dedicates itself to helping patients with periodontal, dental implant and cosmetic laser treatments that regain confidence and healthy smiles. For 39 years, at 56-03 214th Street, Bayside, NY, the practice has gained a reputation for honesty, integrity and providing excellent, high quality care in a calm and friendly environment.
You can contact the office at (718) 229-3838 or office@bernardfialkoffdds.com.

I am happy to accept any type of knitted, crocheted, or loom knitted items made from you. Also I do accept happily yarn donations. Thank you again to everyone who donates any amount of type of yarn, or hats. Together we are all making a difference.
If you wish to donate Paypal address is: heidetheresa@gmail.com. This helps with the cost of shipping hats out monthly.

Buskers doing their thing in Broadmead, Bristol.
**Street performance or busking is the act of performing in public places for gratuities. In many countries the rewards are generally in the form of money but other gratuities such as food, drink or gifts may be given. Street performance is practiced all over the world by men, women and children and dates back to antiquity. People engaging in this practice are called street performers or buskers.
Performances are anything that people find entertaining. Performers may do acrobatics, animal tricks, balloon twisting, caricatures, clowning, comedy, contortions, escapology, dance, singing, fire skills, flea circus, fortune-telling, juggling, magic, mime, living statue, musical performance, puppeteering, snake charming, storytelling or reciting poetry or prose, street art such as sketching and painting, street theatre, sword swallowing, and ventriloquism.
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside.
