Federal Hall On Wall Street In New York City
Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York is where, on April 30th, 1789, George Washington took his oath of office to become the first President of the United States.
The building that stood here before this one served as the US capitol for a short time in the late 18th century. During that time, Congress used to meet in it, and did some very historic things. The Bill of Rights was actually written here. This was where they settled on a plan for the judiciary system, as well as the US Treasury system. All this was done before the capital was moved to Philadelphia in 1790 and then to Washington DC in 1800.
After the capital moved, they tore down the building in 1812 and sold the scrap for $400. The part of the balcony where Washington took his oath of office is all that remains.
The building we're standing in was completed in 1842 and served as the US Customs house, because the US didn’t have an income tax at the time. The way we got money into the country was when goods were delivered, we’d tax them. The ship captains would come in here and line up around the rotunda.

Lyndhurst Mansion and Other Castles of New York
When you think castle you probably think medieval times or maybe you think Belvedere Castle in Central Park. But a lot of majestic castles are scattered throughout New York State.
North of New York City is Bannerman Castle. Its namesake was Irishman Francis Bannerman, who owned an ammunitions company in Brooklyn. He bought the island in 1901 and had the castle built to store military surplus. The state purchased the island in 1967. After a fire destroyed most of the castle in 1969, it became off-limits to the public. (The island eventually became part of Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve.)
In the Great Lakes region, you'll find Boldt Castle. George Boldt, a former manager of the Waldorf-Astoria, commissioned this castle in 1900. It was once one of the largest private homes in the United States. Today, it is a tourist attraction.
Hundreds of years ago, a castle was a structure that had to be fortified from attack. But after arriving at Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, I learned that times have changed.
Lyndhurst was built in 1838. It was designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis, the same man who designed Federal Hall on Wall Street.
The grand entryway is just a hint of what is inside. One of the first rooms you enter is a parlor where guests gathered before dinner. This was a room designed for conversation.
On our way to the paintings gallery, we passed a bathroom and the duchess's room complete with vintage Louis Vuitton trunk. The gallery made it clear that owner Jay Gould loved collecting fine art.
Almost 200 years after the gothic revival home was built, Lyndhurst remains a crown jewel on the shore of the Hudson River.

STORYLINE:
The US Congress honored the human loss and heroism of the September 11 attacks in a rare and somber special session convened Friday in the city hit the hardest.
More than 300 House and Senate members came to Federal Hall, the massive marble-columned building on the site where Congress first met more than two centuries ago - and located only a few blocks from where the World Trade Centre once punctuated the city's skyline.
The last time Congress met in New York was 212 years ago, when lawmakers watched as George Washington was inaugurated as the nation's first president.
Friday's special session marked only the second occasion in modern times when Congress has met outside Washington.
The purpose was unmistakable: to show solidarity with the city that lost more than 2,800 people in the attacks.
Vice President Dick Cheney joined House Speaker Dennis Hastert in presiding over the session, with a huge American flag behind them.
Although largely symbolic, many lawmakers said the trip was a necessary statement of support for the city and its people as the 9-11 anniversary approaches.
It was also a moment to pledge the nation's resolve in the war against terrorism.
Cheney said the Revolutionary War was still a fresh memory when that first Congress met more than 200 years ago in New York.
On Friday, he said the nation must rise to defend the principles laid down by those founding fathers.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about the United States of America.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. The current design of the U.S. flag is its 27th; the design of the flag has been modified officially 26 times since 1777. The current 50-star American flag was designed by a 17-year-old, Robert G. Heft, as a school project in 1958. He got a B-. It is the longest-used version of the U.S. flag and has been in use for over 56 years.
2. The state of Alaska is the largest of the 50 states of the Union. It’s more than twice as big as the next largest state, Texas. However, it has a population of only 738 thousand people, which is about half of the population of Hawaii. Alaska used to be a Russian colony, until it was sold to America in 1867.
3. Puerto Rico is a territory of the USA and it has been since 1898. It’s an unincorporated U.S. territory, which means that, although it’s governed by the United States government, it’s not part of the Union. This led to some weird consequences: for instance, a Puerto Rican is a natural born US citizen, but as long as he or she resides in Puerto Rico, it may not vote for the president or vice president.
4. The city of Atlanta used to be called Terminus. It was the starting point of a new railroad to the Midwest, where settlers began to build homes. It quickly grew into a large town, which than became the capital city of the state of Georgia. Coca-Cola was also launched here in 1886.
5. Yellowstone was the first National Park in the U.S. and is also widely held to be the first national park in the world. The park contains the Yellowstone Supervolcano, an active volcano that last erupted 630,000 years ago. When it will erupt again, it will devastate a large portion of the US, mostly through ash fall.
6. The first capital of the Union was New York City, between 1785 and 1790. In 1789 George Washington took his oath as president on the balcony at Federal Hall. Since 1790 it has remained the largest city in the USA.
7. Originally, the United States was comprised of 13 states on the East Coast. Gradually, the colonies increasingly resisted London's demands for more control and began collaborating with each other instead. This led to calls for protection of the colonists' Rights as Englishmen, especially the principle of no taxation without representation and eventually the American Revolution began in which the colonies established a Continental Congress and declared independence in 1776.
