A haunted house explores the darker side of New York
LEADIN:
New Yorkers are getting in the spirit of Halloween by visiting a 'haunted' house.
It's a scary sensory overload for visitors to the house that is the stuff of nightmares.
STORYLINE:
New York City's bad old days are here again. ... in a Halloween haunted house.
Many of the features of Nightmare: New York harken back to a 1970s and 80s-era Gotham, when subways were awash in graffiti and crime and gun-wielding wielding punks roamed the streets.
The 38 actors starring in this in-your-face, interactive attraction crank up the fright factor for spectators who are marked with an X on their face, meaning they allow themselves to be touched by performers trying to scare them out of their wits.
When someone screams, that's our applause, says Timothy Haskell, the off-Broadway director who created the show. But I also want them to appreciate the real-life stories that seep into your bones; startles are ephemeral, haunting is forever.
He says the show is constantly evolving: We are constantly tweaking - we'll notice a scare that is not working or maybe that has gotten redundant or complacent and we'll replace it in another one in a different way and try and come up with ideas that are a little more creative than the way before.
Staged in a 13-section maze, Nightmare: New York shows off the dark side of the city's history.
Mole people, who are said to have created a separate society underground in New York's subway tunnels, help guide you through parts of the haunted house.
In a graffiti covered subway car participants witness a murder and mugging, before they themselves get kidnapped.
They did kidnap us and made us separate and put a bag over my head which was pretty scary, not gonna lie, but it was pretty awesome, says Tim Roach after finishing the experience.
As a precaution, spectators are warned that if they're prone to panic attacks, claustrophobia or heart problems, there's an exit.
Even while ticket-holders wait in line there's a creepy stalker roaming the lobby.
It's amazing, I've been doing this for 10 years. I look forward to it every year and I have other jobs during the day but I still keep coming back because it's thrilling. I like to say its 60 percent percent hunting and 40 percent performance. So I try to find that right time to catch people off guard try to think about what their insecurity might be, so I can adjust my performance to each person, says Richard Jordan, who plays a Stalker in Nightmare: New York.
Nightmare, is in its 11th season, and runs until November 1.

A Bloody Week in Ciudad Juarez: A cartel killer tells all
A warning, this report contains some scenes viewers may find distressing.
Our Latin America Correspondent Guillermo Galdos spent a week in the city of Ciudad Juarez, just across the US border in Mexico, one of the key routes for drugs and people into the United States and where the war's frontlines are becoming even more blurred.
Last year was the bloodiest in Mexico's recent history. More than 27,000 people were killed, as the drug war claimed ever more victims.
Now even more of those who report on the killings are also paying the price. More than 40 journalists have now been killed in Mexico in the last six years, including 12 last year alone.

America’s First Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship
Since its heyday in the late 1800s, bare-knuckle boxing in the US has been relegated to parking lots and grimy basements, an underground sport that couldn’t find a way to bring itself above board. But in June of 2018—after spending years petitioning almost 30 states to sanction the brutal fights—promoter David Feldman finally managed to stage America's first-ever legal bare-knuckle boxing match in Wyoming.
VICE went to the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships in Cheyenne a few days ahead of the big event to hear how Feldman managed to pull it off, and to meet a handful of fighters for whom boxing—and even MMA fighting—just isn’t hardcore enough.

The Islamic State (Full Length)
WATCH NOW: Embedded with Al-Qaeda in Syria -
The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.
The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state.
Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.
VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings.

I Visited the MOST HAUNTED Prison | Eastern State Penitentiary
Is Eastern State Penitentiary really the most haunted prison? Al Capone's jail cell is a little creepy, but what about the rest of this prison's paranormal history? Is it really as scary as it seems? I stopped by last time I was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and got to experience this place first hand!
I'm doing a whole series about haunted places! Leave a COMMENT letting me know what places you want me to talk about. And SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss the other videos!

Institutionalized: Mental Health Behind Bars
James Burns is voluntarily spending 30 days in solitary confinement. Learn more at solitary.vice.com:
----
America’s relationship with its mentally ill population continues to suffer as a result of inadequacies in the country’s mental health care system.
For the mentally ill in Chicago, the effects of this inadequacy are felt on a magnified scale, as budget cuts and a lack of community-based mental health resources have left these individuals with minimal support. More often than not, this means being repeatedly swept up into the criminal justice system for low-level, non-violent crimes
VICE News takes an immersive look at this issue by going inside the Cook County Jail and speaking with community members on Chicago's south side.

Garbage Island: An Ocean Full of Plastic (Part 3/3)
As if polluting an entire hemisphere's worth of the ocean with plastic weren't enough, we've also poisoned the food chain. Congrats, humanity. We're fucked.
**
Come aboard as we take a cruise to the Northern Gyre in the Pacific Ocean, a spot where currents spin and cycle, churning up tons of plastic into a giant pool of chemical soup, flecked with bits and whole chunks of refuse that cannot biodegrade.

Colorado Experience: Imprisonment
Initially only a single building in the middle of a 30-acre plot of land near Cañon City, Colorado’s first prison was erected in 1868 before statehood. Metal Evolution - Extreme Metal | FULL EPISODE
Support us on Patreon:
For many metal fans, Extreme Metal is heavy metal. Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, Entombed, Darkthrone, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, guttural vocals, blast beats, lyrics about death and the occult …. we couldn’t tell the story of metal without it. And so Banger Films presents Extreme Metal, the latest chapter in Metal Evolution, the biggest-ever TV series on the history of heavy metal and hard rock. Hosted by Sam Dunn and based on Banger’s groundbreaking “Heavy Metal Family Tree”, Extreme Metal features new interviews with Death Metal, Grindcore and Black Metal’s most influential sonic architects and a global journey from Tampa to the UK, Norway and France's Hellfest to investigate the history, myths and intricacies of this most innovative and transgressive subgenre. How extreme is it? Too extreme for some TV networks! Which is why Banger Films turned to crowdfunding—it was support from the metal community around the world through an IndieGogo campaign which made Metal Evolution: Extreme Metal a reality.
