Manhattan Landscape - JKO Reservoir (Central Park)
July, 2013
New York City video tour Central Park #7 4K
In this, the 7th installment in a muli-part Central Park series, we continue to head north in the park and enter the Great Lawn. We also walk past the Delacorte Theater known for Shakespeare in the Park and other free performances. Then we head towards the Obelisk also known as Cleopatra's Needle. The Obelisk is the oldest man-made object in the park and the oldest outdoor monument in New York City. Finally, we end up at the Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis Reservoir. Many think the reservoir supplies NYC with it's water. In reality, if that were the case, the supply would last six hours! New York City actually gets it's water from a series of tunnels that originate in up-state New York. If you enjoy, please like, comment and subscribe!

From Wikipedia:
Central Park is an urban park in Manhattan, New York City, located between the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, with an estimated 37.5–38 million visitors annually, and one of the most filmed locations in the world. Central Park is the fifth-largest park in New York City by area, covering 843 acres (3.41 km2).
Central Park was first approved in 1853 as a 778-acre (3.15 km2) park. In 1857, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and architect/landscape designer Calvert Vaux won a design competition to construct the park with a plan they titled the Greensward Plan. Construction began the same year, and the park's first areas were opened to the public in late 1858. Additional land at the northern end of Central Park was purchased in 1859, and the park was completed in 1876. After a period of decline in the early 20th century, New York City parks commissioner Robert Moses started a program to clean up Central Park. Another decline in the late 20th century spurred the creation of the Central Park Conservancy in 1980, which refurbished many parts of the park during the 1980s and 1990s.
Main attractions of the park include landscapes such as the Ramble and Lake, Hallett Nature Sanctuary, the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, and Sheep Meadow; amusement attractions such as Wollman Rink, Central Park Carousel, and the Central Park Zoo; formal spaces such as the Central Park Mall and Bethesda Terrace; and the Delacorte Theater, which hosts Shakespeare in the Park programs in the summertime. The park also has sports facilities, including the North Meadow Recreation Center, basketball courts, baseball fields, and soccer fields.
Central Park was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1963 and as a New York City scenic landmark in 1974. The park is owned by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks) but has been managed by the Central Park Conservancy since 1998, under contract with the municipal government in a public-private partnership. The Conservancy, a non-profit organization, contributes 75 percent of Central Park's $65 million annual budget and is responsible for all basic care of the park.

Central Park New York / Lakes
Central Park has several lakes, ranging from simple ponds to lakes both man made and natural. The main lake is the Central Park Reservoir, which since 1994 bears the name of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir. The lake is from 86th to 96th Street. The reservoir is also famous for the running track that surrounds it, and welcomes thousands of athletes every day.
There are also three other artificial lakes. To the south of the Great Lawn, The Lake is spread over 7 hectares and is built on an ancient swamp. To extreme northeast part of the park, at the height of the street 110, the Harlem Meer is located. Harlem Meer means Lake of Harlem in German, so baptized in honour of one of the first established communities in the region. Oak, Cypress and Beech trees surround the lake. The Harlem Meer is unique that its visitors are allowed to fish, with the condition of returning the fish that they have caught; the other great lake of the park is located on the southeast section of Central Park. This is the Pond. The Pond, whose form recalls the shape of a comma, allows visitors to this lake to tune out the noises of the city, and generate an atmosphere of calm in the heart of New York.

Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Have you been to New York? What are your favorite things about this city? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

About Roosevelt Island:
Roosevelt Island is a narrow island in New York City's East River, within the borough of Manhattan. It lies between Manhattan Island to its west and the borough of Queens, on Long Island, to its east. Running from the equivalent of East 46th to 85th Streets on Manhattan Island, it is about 2 miles (3.2 km) long, with a maximum width of 800 feet (240 m), and a total area of 147 acres (0.59 km2). Together with Mill Rock, Roosevelt Island constitutes Manhattan's Census Tract 238, which has a land area of 0.279 sq mi (0.72 km2), and had a population of 9,520 as of the 2000 United States Census. It had a population of 11,661 as of the 2010 United States Census.
The island was called Minnehanonck by the Lenape and Varkens Eylandt (Hog Island) by New Netherlanders, and during the colonial era and later as Blackwell's Island. It was known as Welfare Island when it was used principally for hospitals, from 1921 to 1973. It was renamed Roosevelt Island (after Franklin D. Roosevelt) in 1973.
Roosevelt Island is owned by the city but was leased to the New York State Urban Development Corporation for 99 years in 1969. Most of the residential buildings on Roosevelt Island are rental buildings. There is also a cooperative named Rivercross and a condominium building named Riverwalk. One rental building (Eastwood) has left New York State's Mitchell-Lama Housing Program, though current residents are still protected. It is now called Roosevelt Landings. There are attempts to privatize three other buildings, including the cooperative.

New York City as seen from the Empire State Building
The famous Empire State Building in New York City is 80 years old. The skyscraper was opened in 1931 and became the tallest building in the world at 443.2 meters.
Today, this is the third tallest skyscraper in the United States and the world's fifteenth tallest building.

President John F. Kennedy's 60th News Conference - August 20, 1963
THE PRESIDENT: Good afternoon. The House of Representatives begins this week consideration of legislation vital to the security and well being of the United States and the free world, the Mutual Defense and Assistance Bill of 1963. I hope the House will give full support to the authorization recommended by the Foreign Affairs Committee.
Our foreign aid program is essential to the continued strength of the free world. It gives us increased military security at a cost far lower than if we had to carry the entire burden alone. It gives protection against Communist internal takeover to free people who are yet not able to build solidly without outside help. It provides essential assurances to the new nations of the world that they can count on us in their effort to build a free society. Only with this assurance can they continue to maintain against the pressures that are brought upon them.
This does not represent an impossible burden for the United States; indeed, it is only half as heavy as it was during the Marshall Plan. Then about 2 percent of our gross national product was allocated to foreign assistance. The program today costs only seven-tenths of one percent. The bill before the House has already been cut $850 million from our original estimate last January. Fortunately, the bill now has bipartisan political support. More than half of the Republicans on the House Foreign Affairs committee are in favor of the $4.1 billion authorization now before the House. This program is not an abstract set of numbers, but a set of concrete and continued actions in support of our national security. No party or group should call for a dynamic foreign policy and then seek to cripple this program. One wonders which concrete actions critics would like to stop. Should we scrap the Alliance For Progress, which is our best answer to the threat of communism in this Hemisphere? Should we deny help to India, the largest free power in Asia, as she seeks to strengthen herself against Communist China? Do we wish to dismantle our joint defenses in Korea, Taiwan, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and Greece, countries along the very rim of Communist power? Do we want to weaken our front in Southeast Asia?
This is no time to slacken our efforts. This fight is by no means over. The struggle is not finished. Therefore, as has been said on many occasions before, however tired we may get of this program, our adversaries are not tired. I don't think this country is tired, and the cause of freedom should certainly not be fatigued. Therefore, I think it is necessary that we continue to make this effort. I hope the House will support it. Eighty percent of these funds are spent in the United States, and I think it is necessary and essential, as the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, General Clay and others, that the House figure be passed.
Experience shows us that the appropriation traditionally has been less. I think it is incumbent upon us to support the action of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and I hope the House of Representatives will.
★ Tour Jackie Kennedy's Childhood Home In Virginia | HD
When young Jacqueline Bouvier wasn't spending her summers at Lasata in East Hampton, she spent her childhood at a nine-bedroom Georgian-style mansion built in McLean, Virginia in 1919.
Merrywood, which is perched on the banks of the Potomac River in a suburb of Washington, D.C., is now on the market for $49.5 million (TTR Sotheby's International Realty and JLL have the listing). America Online co-founder Steve Case purchased it in 2005 for $24.5 million, a record for the region at the time. Case and his wife Jean, the chairman of the National Geographic Society, are selling it because they are empty-nesters and are traveling more, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Before she became First Lady Jackie Kennedy, Bouvier moved into Merrywood in the 1940s after her mother married the home's owner, Standard Oil heir Hugh D. Auchincloss. I always love it so at Merrywood—so peaceful … with the river and those great steep hills,” Bouvier wrote in 1944, when she was a teenager.
