USA: NEW YORK: THANKSGIVING PARADE
Natural Sound
Thursday is the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States - and if it's Turkey Day, then it must also be parade day.
All over the U-S Thanksgiving is marked by pre-feast parades, and as usual, the biggest one of them all is through the streets of New York City.
Spirits remained high among the hardy souls who lined up for the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.
With a motorcycle escort, the 1999 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was off.
A sea of umbrellas and rain coats mingled with defiant smiles as crowds a dozen deep braved the elements and lined up for the parade.
Despite a chilly rain, the crowds packed New York City sidewalks to take in the annual event that marks the American holiday.
This year's version, the 73rd Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, featured balloons, dozens of floats and bands and hundreds of clowns - delighting both young and old.
It featured more than 25 balloons and novelties floating high above Broadway on Thursday morning.
Old-time favourites, including the Snoopy and Garfield balloons, as well as newer ones, took the trip down Broadway this year.
The Muppets and Big Bird were also there, too.
More than a dozen marching bands from across American took part.
After toughing out the damp and drizzle, many in the crowd headed home to a warm Thanksgiving Day dinner.

USA: NEW YORK: MACY'S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE UPDATE
English/Nat
More than two (m) million people have turned to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving parade on the streets of New York City.
The annual event has become part of American folklore and marks the start of the Christmas shopping season in the `Big Apple'.
The 69th annual Macy's Thanksgiving day parade kicked off with its usual mixture of bands, floats and entertainers in New York City on Thursday.
And, as ever, it was the giant balloons that took pride of place.
This year's parade was highlighted by dozens of gigantic cartoon-character balloons and samplings of the musicals now showing on nearby Broadway.
Over one thousand handlers guided them from Central Park, down Broadway to midtown Manhattan.
Kids of all ages, bundled against the freezing temperature, lined the route to enjoy the show.
Bone-chilling cold and gusting winds did nothing to dampen spirits.

It's good and I really like it and I want to come again and again and again.

Q: What to do you think of the parade?
A: It's okay (breaks into laughter).
SUPERCAPTION: vox pop
The parade, as much a Thanksgiving institution for many Americans as turkey and pumpkin pie, was expected to draw 55 (m) million television viewers.
The first parade was held in 1924, when some Macy's employees dressed up as clowns, giants and other characters and marched through Manhattan with lions, tigers and bears.
The first balloons, including Felix the Cat, were introduced in 1927.
The arrival of Santa Claus marked the end of the parade and the start of what retailers hope will be a busy Christmas shopping season.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Starts in NYC
(23 Nov 2017) The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade stepped off Thursday with soaring balloons and high-stepping bands as police went all-out to secure it in a year marked by attacks on outdoor gathering spots.
With new faces and old favorites in the lineup, the extravaganza began wending through 2 ½ miles of Manhattan on a chilly morning.
Authorities say there is no confirmation of a credible threat to the parade, but they were taking no chances after both the truck attack and the October shooting that killed 58 people at a Las Vegas country music festival.
New York Police Department officers with assault weapons and portable radiation detectors were circulating among the crowds, sharpshooters were on rooftops and sand-filled city sanitation trucks were poised as imposing barriers to traffic at every cross street.
The mayor and police brass have repeatedly stressed that visitors shouldn't be deterred. But they're asking spectators to be alert for anything suspicious.
Police officers will escort each of the giant balloons to help monitor wind speeds and ensure the wafting characters don't go off course, but winds weren't expected to climb above 17 mph.
In 2005, a balloon caught an unexpected gust of wind and struck a lamppost in Times Square, injuring two people. Since then, the parade has been accident-free.
Smokey Robinson, The Roots, Flo Rida and Wyclef Jean were among the stars celebrating, along with performances from the casts of Broadway's Anastasia, ''Dear Evan Hansen and SpongeBob SquarePants, plus a dozen marching bands.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York is an established tradition and marks the start of the festive season for many Americans.
Each year on the morning of Thanksgiving, hundreds of volunteers join together to inflate the giant balloons which soon set sail across the sky.
Thursday's parade is to feature 12 giant helium balloons, as well as several smaller balloons and balloon-float hybrids that Macy's calls falloons.
Crowds gathered on Wednesday to watch preparations for the 72nd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
After last year's ill fated rendezvous with rough weather, organisers say this year's balloons are safe from the elements, including Babe, the talking pig.
But this Babe is much too big to fit in any normal pen - his is nearly four stories tall.
Last year, a woman watching the parade was critically injured when a balloon, pushed by high winds, hit a lamp post that toppled into the crowd below.
New York City has now toughened laws regarding balloon sizes.
At the same time, additional precautions like added police units and anchors to weigh down balloons are on hand for this year's event.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We've expanded the number of handlers per balloon, we've expanded the management, better communication systems and very important, a partnership with the city, we've changed all of the street lights along the parade route.
SUPER CAPTION: Jean McFadden, Producer,Director Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
Blowing up these huge balloons takes more than air.
It takes engineering, too.
Volunteers use huge air hoses to fill up favourites like the cartoon character Big Bird.
Other volunteers hold ropes, tie sandbags, or manoeuvre the balloons to keep them from exploding or flying away.
Children of all ages packed the blocks of Upper Manhattan to see these giants come to life.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I like seeing them dance. I don't come, I watch it on T-V but I came to see the balloons.
SUPER CAPTION: VOX POP
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade starts bright and early on Thursday morning and marks the American celebration of Thanksgiving.
It also marks the official start to the holiday shopping season.
Millions of spectators are expected to watch Thursday's extravaganza on Broadway by standing on the sidewalks or watching it on television.
