Exotic Pets that are Illegal in New York City!
While many states and cities ban certain exotic pets, New York City must have some of the most stringent laws in the continental United States. In New York State, large carnivores, venomous reptiles, and giant constrictor snakes are unsurprisingly illegal, but those animals that remain legal in the state are prohibited in the city. NYC is known for its ferret ban, which was enforced by Rudy Giuliani in 1999. In fact, the former mayor once told a ferret legalization activist:
“There's something deranged about you… You should go consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist, and have him help you with this excessive concern, how you are devoting your life to weasels.
In 2001, an attempt to repeal the ferret ban failed.
Councilman Noach Dear, an Orthodox Jew, was reminded by his rabbi that ferrets are not Kosher, so he voted against it. Giuliani’s staff argued that like lions, pythons, and other exotics, ferrets are “'naturally inclined to do harm.''
His staff argued:
''New York City is not a natural habitat...It’s a place where millions of people live in apartment buildings'' in which the small animals could ''travel through tiny holes in walls'' and get into neighboring apartments where they might cause ''harmful consequences for unsuspecting neighbors.''
Mayor Bill de Blasio tried to lift the ban, but the proposal was rejected again.
The ferret legalization issue highlights the problem with judging exotic pets as “dangerous” based on largely ignorant fear mongering and personal prejudice.
Leaving your feelings about whether or not some of the 'more exotic' animals should be pets, is it fair to call them dangerous? Are hedgehogs and ferrets inclined to do harm while domestic rats, cats, hamsters, and parrots are not?
Many NYC residents say that the exotic pet ban is not really enforced, and many animals are kept there illegally. Not only are there few, if any significant incidences involving these animals, but there are no issues in the rest of the country, including major cities, with the exception of possibly very rare isolated incidences (as there are with dogs and cats).

Welcome to MASpets! A channel dedicated to providing high quality information about exotic, alternative, and unique pets, as well as traditional ones. This channel supports the freedom of pet owners to care for the species of their choice as long as that animal has been shown to thrive in human care under the right conditions. We strongly believe that facts and education, not admonition, is the best policy for encouraging potential pet keepers to choose the best pet for their living situation. We believe there is no such thing as a ‘good pet’, and do not promote any particular species as pets, however we understand that the desire of some to own something different is essential to their expression and existence as an individual. Whether you are considering a pet, or are just interested in the subject, this channel invites you to become informed about the exciting world of animal diversity.
There are hundreds of species of exotic pets! Some examples include: fennec fox, porcupine, serval, wallaby, boa constrictor, rainbow crab, bush baby, zebra, squirrels, ostrich, kinkajou, macaws, springhare, lemur, leopard gecko, tarantula, capybara, sloth, owl, cockatoo, muntjac deer, lion, short-tailed opossum, raccoon, scorpion, green iguana, and more.
Domesticated exotic pets include: camels, alpaca, reindeer, zebra finch, pot-bellied pig, hedgehog, domestic rats, hamster, gerbil, goldfish, guinea fowl, Bengal cat, peacock, fainting goats, and sugar gliders.
We post introductory videos to animals that can be kept as pets, care tips, address controversies, legal issues, and more. Please see the posted links for more information about this subject!

New York City - Central Park Video Tour (Part 1)
New York Habitat features a complete presentation of the New York's massive 843-acre oasis, right in the middle of Manhattan, Central Park.
You will see that you don't have to go far to escape the craziness of city life.
Please make sure to check out the related New York Habitat blog article to discover more information about Central Park.
The second part of the video tour of Central Park is already available.
Central Park hosts over 25 million visitors per year. It's the most visited park in the United States and its appearance in many movies and television shows has made it famous around the world.
Central Park is bordered on the north by West 110th Street, on the south by West 59th Street, on the west by Eighth Avenue -- which along the Park's borders are known as Central Park North, Central Park South, and Central Park West respectively.
Fifth Avenue retains its name and forms the eastern border of the park.
Central Park contains several lakes and ponds, extensive walking trails, two ice-skating rinks (one of which is a swimming pool in July and August), the Central Park Zoo, the Central Park Conservatory Garden, a wildlife sanctuary, a large area of natural woods, a reservoir with an encircling running track, 37 kids playgrounds, children's yoga, the Delacorte Theater and, of course, the famous Central Park Carousel.
Bethesda Terrace - Mid-Park at 72nd Street
When Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed the park in the late 1850's, they knew they needed a special place in the Park where people could gather. They needed to create a center for socializing, for people to see and be seen, Bethesda Terrace is that place. Hang around here long enough and you'll see it all... street performers, wedding photographs, musicians, artists and more.
Central Park Zoo and the Children's Zoo -- East Side at 64th St.
The Central Park Zoo had some bleak years back in the 70s and 80s. It had been neglected and its animals were living in small cramped cages. It has since been renovated and today it's a thriving healthy zoo with a lot to see. Come see the polar bears, the sea lion pool, monkeys and the amazing tropical rain forest. Just next door is the Children's Zoo. This is a must-see if you have kids. They've got goats, pigs, turtles, ducks and even a cow named Othello. The best part - most of the animals can be touched and fed.
Don't forget that a great way to experience New York is to rent an apartment from New York Habitat. We offer apartments all around Central Park including vacation rentals and Bed & Breakfast . It's a great alternative to the usual hotel and it'll save you money!
This studio accommodation with terrace on the Upper West Side (NY-12814) is a great option if you're looking for quick access to Central Park.
If you're looking to live across the street from the Park, you'll want to consider this amazing one bedroom vacation rental on Central Park South (NY-11135) . The building offers round-the-clock concierge staff, a full-service business center, onsite fitness center and health spa, valet parking, multilingual staff, laundry services and even cellular telephone rental. Last but not least, it is also home to the world famous Alain Ducasse restaurant.
Wolman Rink - East Side between 62nd and 63rd Streets
Wollman Rink was built in 1949 when Kate Wollman donated $600,000 for its construction. In the early 1990's, it was sold and is now run by Donald Trump.
The Pond
Our last stop in part 1 of our Central Park series is one of my favorite little corners of Central Park. It's called, quite fittingly, The Pond. It's in the southeast corner of the park and you'll find ducks, turtles, a few benches and a cute little stone bridge. It's hard to believe you're just a few feet away from 5th Avenue!
Now, that we will move on to our 2nd Video Tour of Central Park!
Do not hesitate to check other video tours by New York Habitat on other area of New York such as the madison square park area
Yemane AKA Monkey, chased and questioned by Eritrean Youth for Change in new york city - YouTube.flv
The Content of this video: Yemane Ghebreab (AKA MONKEY) is the senior adviser to the president of the state of Eritrea, Isaias Afwerki, chased from a bar into a hotel in New York. These youth are some of the youth who have been victims of the terror and despotism of the Eritrean regime and Yemane Ghebreab in Eritrea.Afewerki became the country's first and only president in 1993 after helping achieve Eritrean independence from Ethiopia two years earlier. According to a WikiLeaks diplomatic cable in which the U.S. ambassador there described Afewerki as unhinged, cruel and defiant, the former hero of the Eritrea's independence movement announced in May 2008 that elections would be postponed for three or four decades or longer because they polarize society.
While misinformation is rife in the Horn of Africa, at least two of Eritirea's neighbors, Ethiopia and Djibouti, have accused Afewerki of exporting chaos by funding armed insurgent groups within their countries. Human Rights Watch writes of Eritrea: Arbitrary arrests, torture, and forced labor are rampant. Rule by fiat is the norm. The Eritrean government refuses to implement a constitution approved in 1997 containing civil and human rights provisions. Afewerki is also blamed for starting a pointless war with Ethiopia in 1998 that led to at least 70,000 deaths on both sides and cost two of the world's poorest countries hundreds of millions of dollars. Perhaps as a result of that war, and Afewerki's apparent penchant for needling his neighbors, military service in Eritrea is mandatory for all men, and there is no time limit on the length of their service, which is often done under the cruelest of conditions. This has contributed in part to the refugee crisis in the country, UNHCR reports. While the aforementioned WikiLeaks cable says Eritrea's economy appears to be in a death spiral, and internal discontent is high and growing, it is impossible to know for sure what's going on there; Reporters Without Borders ranks Eritrea as the worst place in the world to be a journalist, lower than North Korea. There must be at least some discontent within the country, however, as the U.N. estimates that as much as two-thirds of the population is malnourished. The aforementioned diplomatic cable states that young people are fleeing the country in droves, so it may just be that there is little resistance remaining to Afewerki's rule.

Sao Paulo: Brazil’s Favorite Destination for Events and Incentive Travel!CNN ranks São Paulo as the city with the 4th best nightlife in the world.São Paulo is the Latin American capital in the sector, according to the ranking, and the major seventh in the world. Hong Kong fell six positions in the year and came in 12th, better position in Asia. Johannesburg, in 18th, is the only African representative, and Dubai, 28th, has the strongest fashion the Middle East. This year's list has some rookies such as Vancouver (31st place), Seoul (34th) and St. Petersburg (51)
Sao Paulo exceeds NY and has largest fleet in the world helicopters,Sao Paulo exceeds Berlin in global influence,Sao Paulo exceeds NY and wins title of best Christmas destination in search.
Fabulous Sao Paulo is Brazil’s largest city and the most populous megapolis in the entire Southern Hemisphere. The world’s ninth largest metropolis is located in Southeastern Brazil—in the State that shares its name—and is the commercial and industrial heart of the South American giant, a country that has made great strides in the last few years to become a world economic power while helping and assisting the perennially underserved populations of its urban centers and rural areas.
Sao Paulo is also a world-renowned center for art, culture, entertainment and sophistication, unlike any other Latin American city. Practically an open air museum with neighborhoods and buildings of historical value—it ranks first among the cities that host international events in the Americas and 12th in the world, after Vienna, Paris, Barcelona, Singapore, Berlin, Budapest, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Seoul, Lisbon and Copenhagen. And according to a study by MasterCard in 130 cities around the world, São Paulo was the third most visited destination in Latin America with 2.4 million foreign travelers, who spent US$2.9 billion in 2013 (the highest among the cities in the region). Some of the most relevant annual events include the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazilian Grand Prix, Sao Paulo Fashion Week and the ATP Brazil Open, as well as the largest gay pride parade in the country, which draws over one million visitors every year.
Paris:
“Paris’ grandeur is inspiring but what I love most about the city is its intimacy. Its quartiers (quarters) are like a patchwork of villages, and while it’s one of the world’s major metropolises – with all of the culture and facilities that go with it – there’s a real sense of community at the local shops, markets and cafes that hasn’t changed since my childhood. Yet because every little ‘village’ has its own evolving...”
Rio de Janeiro:
There's no other place like Rio. It's a combination of many things that I find so captivating: walking through parks inside the city and seeing monkeys and toucans; spending the evening catching music jams around Lapa; joining a few friends amid the roaring crowds at Maracanã; or greeting the sunrise (after an early morning or late night) from Copacabana Beach. In moments like these you realize you're hooked.
New York:
“While there are many reasons to fall for New York, I’ve always loved the energy here. There’s so much creativity in the air, with wildly imaginative works filling the city’s galleries and concert halls – not to mention its restaurants, with ever more inventive mash-ups of global cuisines. Despite living for many years in New York, I never tire of exploring the metropolis. You can cross continents with the mere swipe...”

S1E1 - 'Monkey Business' || Show notes: U.S. Senate budget deal, most vexing words of 2012, and outlandish price tags for New York City real estate. || Show transcript below. ||
|| Show transcript ||
(Jack) Hello, and welcome to 'Monkey Business' for January 1, 2013. Here's what we're reading today with our morning coffee:
Members of the U.S. Senate have agreed on a budget deal that temporarily delays spending cuts, and puts off tax hikes for all but some of the wealthiest Americans. In their sights are households with incomes greater than 450,000 U.S. dollars annually.
In a late-night New Year's Eve session, the bill was approved by a vote of 89 to 8 at about 2 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, with the majority of representatives of both political parties supporting the change.
The move nudges the U.S. economy back from the edge of a 'fiscal cliff,' but additional changes might be in the offing, to rein in budget deficits that've seen U.S. debt spiral to $16.4 trillion.
The debate next goes to the House (U.S. House of Representatives).
[Additional reading - Budget deal in play]
For more on that story, just browse the links in the infobox. This will be the story to watch, since U.S. stock exchanges (NYSE, Nasdaq, AMEX, all options exchanges) are closed today for New Year's Day.
And, over to Marcel, for Nearly News.
(Marcel) Lake Superior State University, in Michigan (United States) releases an annual list of words people never want to hear again.
One of 2012's most annoying phrases, according to votes at the university's site, is 'fiscal cliff.' It came in number one on the list of phrases that language lovers most want to see disappear, never to be heard from again.
Also not so much a fan of the fiscal cliff - although in this case, due to obliviousness - are the future buyers of three bits of New York City real estate.
What fiscal cliff? They know not of this - not when the price ticket for any of these three properties is between 95 and 100 million U.S. dollars.
The most absurdly expensive Manhattan listings of 2012 are a home in the Sherry-Netherland on Fifth Avenue and a property at 15 Central Park West, both for listed for $95 million, and the Woolworth Mansion - a bargain at $90 million, no?
The most expensive listing of the year is a penthouse on West 56th Street, for 100 million U.S. dollars - it features 135 windows, a wine cellar, and 360-degree views.
Of course, for a 360-degree view, you can always just...turn around. Voila. For free.
You can browse a gallery of images in the link in the infobox. Do you know, they've also provided floor plan maps of the properties.
That's considerate. For 95 million, a property should at least come with a map for when you forget where you are.
There are seven bedrooms and seven baths in the co-op? How nice for absent-minded people; if you fall down somewhere after a night ringing in the new year - like me - and you're totally lost somewhere in your own house, then just...stay there.
Then when your guests want to find you, they can ring you on their phone:
'Where are you now?'
'Somewhere.'

Foodie locations:
Thai Villa: I went to this place on a Friday evening without reservation and the wait time was one hour. Do make a reservation before coming to this Thai restaurant. I did not end up eating here.
Bao Bao Cafe: Since I did not have the opportunity to try out the Thai food, I opted for Chinese noodles instead. The Chinese meal usually consist of two components: carbohydrate and accompanying dishes. My noodles had minced pork and cowpea. This menu item is popular at this cafe. You can choose the spice level. Additional toppings are available with extra charge. I went for medium spicy.
Amy's Bread: The cakes in the video are the yellow cake with pink frosting and monkey cake, the bakery's specialty.
