The Reenactment of the Battle at Natural Bridge
We get a tour of the site that was the location for the Battle of Natural Bridge in 1865. Plus, we take a look at the Reenactment Battle that is held annually at that location.
Voices of the Civil War Episode 38: Battle of Natural Bridge
The Battle of Natural Bridge was fought on March 6, 1865, in Newport, Florida near Tallahassee. Tallahassee was one of the few southern capitals not invaded by the Union, which protected a significant area from the severe economic losses. On the evening of March 5, 1865 the 2nd and 99th United States Colored Infantries arrived at Natural Bridge and prepared to cross, but were met with Confederate forces. The fighting took place at close range and involved heavy fire from both small arms and artillery. The Union force was badly beaten and by the end of the day was in full retreat back to the St. Marks Lighthouse. The Confederate army held the bridge and saved Tallahassee.
Civil War reenactors march from St. Marks Lighthouse, Florida.
March 6, 2015 marked the 150th anniversary of Union forces landing near the St. Marks Lighthouse, bound for Natural Bridge where they were repulsed by Confederate forces during the Civil War.
To commemorate the event, reenactors of the Leon Rifles and the United States Colored Troops (USCT) 2nd Infantry marched 8 miles from the St. Marks Lighthouse to the Visitors Center of St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. On March 7 and 8, 2015, they participated in the annual reenactment of the battle at Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park in the town of Woodville, just south of Tallahassee, Florida.
Thanks to St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge for hosting the commemorative march on March 6, 2015, and to the reenactors for their dedication.
Olustee Battlefield
Olustee Battlefield State Park. On February 20, 1864, the Confederates stopped the Federals along the rail line towards lake City, and ended a Union attempt to take the interior of Florida. About 5000 soldiers on each side, the Union had twice as many casualties.
This next February is the 150th anniversary and reenactment of the battle.
There is not much in the park to see otherwise.

1917
In Select Theaters Christmas, Everywhere January 10
Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.
1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). The film is produced by Mendes and Pippa Harris (co-executive producer, Revolutionary Road; executive producer, Away We Go) for their Neal Street Productions, Jayne-Ann Tenggren (co-producer, The Rhythm Section; associate producer, Spectre), Callum McDougall (executive producer, Mary Poppins Returns, Skyfall) and Brian Oliver (executive producer, Rocketman; Black Swan).
The film is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures. Universal Pictures will release the film domestically in limited release on December 25, 2019 and wide on January 10, 2020. Universal and Amblin Partners will distribute the film internationally, with eOne distributing on behalf of Amblin in the U.K.
