⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking NYC (Narrated) : SoHo, Manhattan (July 10, 2019)
Google Maps Route:
Join me as I narrate a walk through the SoHo neigborhood in Manhattan.
From Wikipedia:
SoHo, sometimes written Soho, is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, which in recent history came to the public's attention for being the location of many artists' lofts and art galleries, but is now better known for its variety of shops ranging from trendy upscale boutiques to national and international chain store outlets. The area's history is an archetypal example of inner-city regeneration and gentrification, encompassing socioeconomic, cultural, political, and architectural developments.
The name SoHo refers to the area being South of Houston Street, a name coined in 1962 by Chester Rapkin, an urban planner and author of The South Houston Industrial Area study, also known as the Rapkin Report. The name also recalls Soho, an area in London's West End.
Almost all of SoHo is included in the SoHo–Cast Iron Historic District, which was designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1973, extended in 2010, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978. It consists of 26 blocks and approximately 500 buildings, many of them incorporating cast-iron architectural elements. Many side streets in the district are paved with Belgian blocks.
SoHo is part of Manhattan Community District 2 and its primary ZIP Codes are 10012 and 10013. It is patrolled by the 1st Precinct of the New York City Police Department.

It was raining and moved to the front with the rain curtain. You can see the famous Guggenheim Museum as well as the artworks on display. The spiral art museum, nicknamed the snail, is a museum built by the Guggenheim at the request of the 20th-century architect Wright to build the Temple of the Soul. I could not shoot the artwork and I rushed to the bus only to see the famous Snail Museum. You can see Central Park raining out the window. One day the bus stops and returns to the city center. It is regrettable that I can not go sightseeing properly. The way back to the hostel by subway. I hear a song singing in my ears. As I know the song lyrics, I put my legs up and down. I asked you to play more Korean songs. I think about Arirang playing on the New York subway.

The German/American Provenance Research Exchange Program (PREP) 2017-2019 brings together, for the first time, museum professionals from both sides of the Atlantic who specialize in World War II-era provenance projects for a three-year, systematic exchange that expands and elaborates on the methods and practices through which both countries have approached the issues pertaining to Holocaust-era art looting. PREP is also widening the scope of WWII-era provenance research, which to date has prioritized painting, sculpture, and Judaica, by including Asian art, decorative arts, and works on paper.
PREP is co-organized by the Smithsonian Institution and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation—Berlin State Museums). Its five partner institutions are the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Getty Research Institute in LA, the Dresden State Art Collections, the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich, and the German Center for Lost Art in Magdeburg.

MUSEUM OF MODERN ART BUILDINGS FOR BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT EXHIBITION 1957 62794
This film (likely hosted by Arthur Drexler) chronicles the Buildings for Business and Government exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, February 27-April 28, 1957.
Original press release text: Six buildings commissioned by business and government will be shown at the Museum of Modern Art, 11 West 53 Street, from February 26 through May 5 in an exhibition demonstrating the important role a new kind of patronage is playing in the current building program that is changing the face of our country and the face it presents abroad. Actual sections of walls of glazed brick, pierced tile, glass and aluminum, a suspended ceiling of aluminum discs and granite paving have been built in the Museum's galleries to show visitors the fine materials used in these buildings. Large models are accompanied by photographic murals to show the individual character of each building as fully as possible. Selected by Arthur Drexler, Director of the Museum's Department of Architecture and Design, Buildings for Business and Government illustrates a range of contemporary architectural problems and possibilities. The General Motors Technical Center in Detroit, designed by Eero Saarinen and Associates, and the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill are large, complex projects composed of several buildings on three and four hundred acre sites. The Seagram Building at 375 Park Avenue by Mies van der Rone and Philip C. Johnson, and the Chase Manhattan Bank building in the Wall Street area by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill are being built in two of the most famous and crowded areas in the world, where space is the most valuable commodity. The St. Louis Air Terminal by Holimuth, Yamasaki and Leinweber must fit today's needs and yet be easily expanded for tomorrow's traffic and population. The US Embassy in New Delhi by Edward Stone is an example of the excellent work being done abroad by the government where architecture is an important representative of America. Mr. Drexler says: Business and government alike are rediscovering the rewards of fine building,
and the results can be seen not only in individual works of great beauty but in a generally higher standard of excellence....The United States no longer demands that major government commissions be executed in antique styles. Embassies being built abroad by the State Department, as part of a program which began in 1956, and the new Academy for the United States Air Force, look like what they are: modern American buildings. Business organizations are now undertaking building programs that deliberately exceed strict utilitarian limits. Happily our buildings are beginning to benefit from the attention to material, craftsmanship, and detail lavished on the
automobile and other industrial products. Today's most valuable material, however, is space. In the present condition of our cities the use to which land is put is a decisive factor in architectural quality. Releasing part of a site so that it may be used as open space allows light and air to penetrate narrow streets, and makes it possible to see the buildings--a consideration of some importance if we are to have architecture at all. The concern with esthetic and social values shown by government and business through these buildings is not in itself new. It denotes rather a shift in emphasis clients are becoming patrons.

TOP 10 MOST EXPENSIVE PAINTINGS--
#10. $76.7 million. Massacre of the innocents by Peter Paul Ruben, 1610---
Bought by Kenneth Thompson at Sotheby’s London, July 2002. The flamboyant and dramatic work by Rubens – though recently some voices discussing its authenticity have been heard could also fight for the title of „most unexpected success“: Christie’s had estimated its price at a mere £5 million.
#9. $106.5 million. Nude, Green Leaves and Bust by Pablo Picasso, 1932--
This sensual and colorful masterpiece is the most expensive work by Picasso ever sold at auction. The work, formerly in the collection of Mrs. Sidney F. Brody, had been never exhibited in public since 1961.
#8. $110 million. Flag by Jasper Johns, 1958--
„Flags“ are Jasper Johns most famous works. The artist painted his first American flag in 1954–55, a work now at the MoMA.
#7. $119.9 million. The Scream by Edvard Munch, 1895--
This iconic work was the most expensive painting ever sold at auction until it was surpassed by Bacon’s „Three Studies of Lucian Freud“. The work is the most colorful of the four versions of Edvard Munch’s masterpiece „The Scream“, and the only one still in private hands.
#6. $135,000,000. Gustav Klimt – Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I--
This was sold by Maria Altmann, who – after a lengthy and complicated court battle – was deemed rightful owner of this Klimt and several others. Altmann was named as an inheritor of the painting in the will of by the widowed husband of the model herself, despite the efforts of the Austrian State, as Adele Bloch-Bauer had originally left the painting to the State Gallery in her own will. The painting was bought by Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galerie in New York, to be the centerpiece of a collection of Jewish-owned art rescued from the Nazi looting that took place in the Second World War.
#5. $137,500,000. Willem de Kooning – Woman III--
Another painting sold by Geffen in 2006, but this time bought by billionaire Steven A. Cohen. It is part of a series of 6 painted by de Kooning in the period of 1951-53, which revolved around the theme of a woman, and is allegedly the only Woman still in private hands.
#4. $140,000,000. Jackson Pollock – No.5, 1948--
It is claimed by the New York Times that this painting was sold by David Geffen (of Geffen Records), to David Martinez (managing partner of Fintech Advisory). However, a press release issued on behalf of Martinez states that he didn’t actually purchase the painting. So the truth is shrouded in mystery, and it can only be rumored to have sold for a record-breaking $140 million.
#3. $142,4 million. Three Studies of Lucian Freud by Francis Bacon, 1969--
Not only the most expensive painting ever auctioned, but also a record for a contemporary work of art. Christie’s explained that when this work was painted, „the relationship between Freud and Bacon was at its apex“.
#2. $155 million. La Rêve (The Dream) by Pablo Picasso, 1932--
„La Rêve (The Dream)“ is one of Picasso’s most sensual and famous paintings, depicting her lover Marie-Therese Walter sitting on a red armchair with her eyes closed. In 2006, Steve Wynn agreed to sell the painting to Steven Cohen for $139 million, but the sale was cancelled when Mr. Wynn accidentally damaged the work.
#1. $250 million. The Card Players by Paul Cézanne,2011--
The exact price of The Card Players (even the currency of sale) is not known, with estimates from $259 million to even $320 million. The Card Players is a series of oil paintings by the French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne. Painted during Cézanne’s final period in the early 1890s, there are five paintings in the series. Keep in mind though guys, the Royal Family of Qatar didn’t buy the series – they bought just that one painting for ~259 million).
