Privatve Clubs of New York Part 3 -- New York Athletic Club -- filmed Friday April 14, 2017
New York Athletic Club The City House, located at 180 Central Park South, is a large, cavernous building built in the early twentieth century which offers panoramic views of Central Park. Designed by Charles W. Clinton, the 24-floor facility includes two restaurants, a cocktail lounge, library, ballroom, billiard room, meeting rooms, rooftop solarium, and eight floors of guest rooms for members and club guests. The athletic training floors include a swimming pool, basketball courts, boxing rings, a fencing and wrestling room, judo floor, and squash courts.
NYAC headquarters in Manhattan Named for Wall Street businessman William R. Travers who arranged for its purchase in 1886, Travers Island is the NYAC's summer facility on Long Island Sound. It consists of the main house, other buildings and facilities that sit on 30 acres (120,000 m2) of landscaped grounds. Centered around the Main House, the Olympic-sized salt water pool, and accompanying cabanas, Travers Island extends the range of NYAC sports to include tennis, rowing, yachting, outdoor swimming and diving, a children's day camp, rugby, soccer, croquet, and lacrosse.
In 1866, William Buckingham Curtis, Harry Buermeyer, and John C. Babcock opened a gymnasium on the corner of 6th Avenue and 14th Street in their New York City apartment, after discussing the rapid rise of organized athletics in England. Interest in their gym grew, and the three men decided to found the New York Athletic Club on September 8, 1868. The club was modeled after the London Athletic Club. Their goal was to sponsor athletic competitions in the New York area, and to keep official records for different sports. The NYAC was established on September 8, 1868. Its Constitution and Bylaws were adopted in December 1868. In the beginning there was no initiation fee, but $10 was required for the first six months of dues.
In 1879, at which time it had 170 members, it published rules in various amateur sports, including fencing, sparring, and Greco-Roman wrestling. The NYAC can be considered the foundation for amateur athletics in the United States. It was the first organization to compile and apply a code of rules for the government of athletic meetings, the first to offer prizes for open amateur games, and the first to hold an amateur championship.
NYAC members have won 119 Olympic gold medals, 53 silver medals, and 59 bronze medals. Presently, the NYAC has top-ranked competitors in wrestling, judo, rowing, fencing, water polo and track and field, among other sports. Forty NYAC members competed for three countries at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, winning 16 medals.

New York, New York - Sailing to Manhattan from Jersey City HD (2016)
New York—often called New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part—is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. A global power city, New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. With a census-estimated 2014 population of 8,491,079 distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2), New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. By 2014 census estimates, the New York City metropolitan region remains by a significant margin the most populous in the United States, as defined by both the Metropolitan Statistical Area (20.1 million residents) and the Combined Statistical Area (23.6 million residents). In 2013, the MSA produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.39 trillion, while in 2012, the CSA generated a GMP of over US$1.55 trillion, both ranking first nationally by a wide margin and behind the GDP of only twelve and eleven countries, respectively.
New York City traces its roots to its 1624 founding as a trading post by colonists of the Dutch Republic and was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a globally recognized symbol of the United States and its democracy.
Many districts and landmarks in New York City have become well known, and the city received a record 56 million tourists in 2014, hosting three of the world's ten most visited tourist attractions in 2013. Several sources have ranked New York the most photographed city in the world. Times Square, iconic as the world's heart and its Crossroads, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theater District, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. The names of many of the city's bridges, skyscrapers, and parks are known around the world. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and the city is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Manhattan's real estate market is among the most expensive in the world. Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates the highest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere, with multiple signature Chinatowns developing across the city. Providing continuous 24/7 service, the New York City Subway is one of the most extensive metro systems worldwide, with 469 stations in operation. New York City's higher education network comprises over 120 colleges and universities, including Columbia University, New York University, and Rockefeller University, which have been ranked among the top 35 in the world.

More info via Wikipedia:
Homelessness in the United States of America is an area of concern for social service providers, government officials, policy professionals, and society at large. Although the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in January 2012 annual point-in-time count found that 633,782 people across the United States were homeless, other counts vary widely. In a recent approximation, an estimated 1.6 million unduplicated persons used transitional housing or emergency shelters. Of these people, approximately 1/3 are members of households with children, a nine percent increase since 2007. Another approximation is from a study done by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, which states that approximately 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of them children, are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2007). With 2007 as a benchmark, the data from the report showed a 6.8 percent decline in homelessness among individuals, a 3.7 percent decline of homeless families, a 13.1 percent decline of the unsheltered homeless population, and a 19.3 percent decline in persons experiencing chronic homelessness. Determining even an approximate count of homeless people is quite difficult, even more so when it comes to those that are under the age of 21. Adolescents, teens, and runaways seem to fall through the crack; so many go unaccounted for. Many of the youth living on the streets do not want to be counted for various reasons. Therefore, agencies that do count, use different methods and techniques that make an accurate count that much more difficult.
One out of 50 children or 1.5 million children in America will be homeless each year. In 2013 that number jumped to one out of 30 children, or 2.5 million. There were an estimated 57,849 homeless veterans estimated in the United States during January 2013; or 12 percent of all homeless adults. Just under 8 percent of homeless U.S. veterans are female. Texas, California and Florida have the highest numbers of unaccompanied homeless youth under the age of 18; comprising 58% of the total homeless under 18 youth population.
Because of turnover in the homeless population, the total number of people who experience homelessness for at least a few nights during the course of a year is thought to be considerably higher than point-in-time counts. A 2000 study estimated the number of such people to be between 2.3 million and 3.5 million. According to Amnesty International USA, vacant houses outnumber homeless people by five times.
Big Apple Island - The Sailing Family Takes On New York! (Ep4)
Elizabeth and I have lived in New York, but we've never had the opportunity to take our kids there - so it was quite special to sail there with them! After anchoring just outside the city in Long Island we took the train into The Big Apple and hit the main sights. But the highlight had to be the Empire State Building. Or was it Times Square and the Lion King? Who knows - but I'll tell you this, after all the amazing places we have been, the kids still say that sailing into New York City has been their highlight!
PLEASE NOTE: Because we are a family channel, we actively monitor all comments for the protection of our children. Please leave a comment and we will approve it as quickly as we can!
PS: We're posting weekly, so if you liked this video, please subscribe!!! Thanks all!
-----------------
ABOUT US - THE SAILING FAMILY: We're a family of five sailing around the world on a performance catamaran. Ten years ago, before kids, we sailed S/V HONEYMOON from Annapolis to Sydney, Australia! We started what is probably the very first Sailing Vlog, and now we're back at it again, but this time with our kids!
ABOUT OUR BOAT: Our new boat is a 51 foot, Ferrari red, performance catamaran named ARCHER. It was built by Outremer, a famous catamaran company with a 30 year pedigree of making fast, offshore capable cruising cats. Even the word Outremer means Over Seas in French, so you know the design brief has been to create a safe, well built, reliable cruising boat, with a touch of high-performance characteristics to help it sail upwind and clock large distances daily. As a 51 footer it is very comfortable inside and it might just be the perfect boat for a family sailing around the world.
OUR GOAL is to spend as much time as possible with our kids during these formative years - making lasting memories that expose them to the greater world and teach them to appreciate how lucky we are. Seth put his career on hold, we sold everything we owned, we rented our house and we bought a boat! We hope these videos will help us all remember this incredible voyage. Unlike other sailing vlogs, we are not doing this for the views, but if you want to come along, please do!
SETH learned to sail when he was 12 years old on Lake St. Clair outside Detroit. He's raced competitively on J105s, J24s, Wianno Sr's and several other boats. He's even spent a day practicing with Oracle Team USA during the 33rd America's Cup. But he loves cruising with this family, surfing, kite surfing, fishing, photography and video editing. He's the CMO of Vacay Inc, Elizabeth's start up.
ELIZABETH likes sailing, but it's more of a means to travel than a passion. She's been all over the world and loves seeing new places - but she hates to pack! With this in mind, she left Gap Inc and created her own clothing company that creates 5-piece collections that mix and match to create two weeks of different outfits. Every item in her collection is versatile, wrinkle free and comfortable to wear in tropical environments. She runs the company from our boat (with a lot of help from her shoreside team), but check it out at vacaystyle.com and support her company if you can!
OUR BOYS are best buddies. HALE, the oldest, was born in 2010 and loves all things sports related! RHYS was born in 2011 and is our future model/surfer/engineer. PIERCE was born in 2013 and is our little man with a big heart for animals and a need to keep up with whatever his big brothers are doing! They all miss their friends and home schooling hasn't been easy, but they are loving sailing and seeing the world. A good bon fire on the beach and they couldn't be happier.
OUR ROUTE has taken us from the Boston/Cape Cod area of the United States down to the Caribbean and then on to the Panama Canal. We're now in the South Pacific and are aiming for New Zealand by Christmas - and then a complete circumnavigation by 2021.
THANKS for watching all. Please leave a comment to tell us what you think and let us know if you have questions. And subscribe!
