Riverside Park is a scenic waterfront public park on the Upper West Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City, operated and maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. The park consists of a narrow 4-mile (6.4 km) strip of land between the Hudson River and the gently curving rise-and-fall of Riverside Drive. When the park was first laid out, access to the river was blocked by the right-of-way of the New York Central Railroad West Side Line; later the railroad track was covered over with an esplanade lined with honey-locusts. Riverside Park also contains part of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, which encircles Manhattan's waterfronts with car-free bike routes.
The 191 acres (0.77 km2) of land which form the original area of the Park (from 72nd to 125th Streets) were undeveloped prior to construction of the Hudson River Railroad, built in 1846 to connect New York City to Albany. The first proposal to convert the riverside precipice into a park was contained in a pamphlet written by William R. Martin, a parks commissioner, in 1865. In 1866, a bill introduced into the Legislature by commissioner Andrew Green was approved, the first segment of park was acquired through condemnation in 1872, and construction began.
The most used sections of Riverside Park are on the tiered slopes between the Hudson and Riverside Drive from 72nd Street to 125th Street. Riverside Park South extends from 72nd to 59th Street on the former Penn Central yard, with an old locomotive on display. Riverside Park South leads to Hudson River Park which goes all the way south to the tip of Manhattan. There is also a northern section of the park from 135th Street to 155th Street and adjacent to Riverbank State Park. Paths along the river connect the park to Hudson River Park to the south and Fort Washington Park to the north. The portion from 181st Street to Dyckman Street, including Inspiration Point, fell into disrepair and disuse in the late 20th century, and was restored at the turn of the century.
Riverside Park is embellished with numerous notable monuments and statues, including the:
Amiable Child Monument, at Riverside Drive north of 122nd Street, on the slope north of Grant's Tomb; it commemorates the long-ago death of a beloved child, a small boy who died in what was then an area of country homes near New York City. One side of the monument reads: “Erected to the Memory of an Amiable Child, St. Claire Pollock, Died 15 July 1797 in the Fifth Year of His Age.” The monument is composed of a granite urn on a granite pedestal inside a wrought iron fence. The monument, originally erected by George Pollock, who was either the boy's father or his uncle, has been replaced twice due to deterioration. The monument is thought to be the only single-person private grave on city-owned land in New York City.

Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, which commemorates Civil War veterans of both the Union Army and Navy, stands at the west end of 89th Street.
Riverside Park almost received a monument to the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. A granite plaque was set in the paving at the end of the Promenade, near 84th Street, on October 19, 1947.

SUMMARY:
- U Thant Island is a teeny-tiny 100-by-200-foot artificial island located off the coast of Manhattan. Its history goes way back to the 1890s. The island remained undisturbed and out of the spotlight until 1977 when it was adopted by the Peace Meditation at the United Nations.
- It’s now turned into a protected sanctuary for migrating birds, including a small colony of beautiful double-crested cormorants.
- North Brother Island is currently designated as a bird sanctuary, but its history is a lot darker. The island was abandoned up until 1885 when it became the new location for Riverside Hospital. Riverside was at first an isolated hospital for smallpox patients but over time expanded and started accepting sufferers of other types of highly contagious and deadly diseases, like tuberculosis and typhoid fever.
- If we venture out across the globe, we’ll find even more places that are, for one reason or another, off-limits for visitors. One prime example is Snake Island, which is located about 90 miles off the coast of Sao Paulo. As to why this place is forbidden for travel, the name says it all! Snake Island houses from 2,000 to 4,000 venomous snakes.
- There are other even more mysterious places out there, like Heard Island. You can find it in the middle of the ocean between Australia and Antarctica. Heard Island is home to animals that are totally unique to this area, and the Australian government wants them to live in peace without human intervention.
- Surtsey Island was formed from a huge volcanic eruption that took place back in 1963. The eruption lasted for 4 whole years, allowing the island to grow to a size of one square mile. Since then, it’s continued to be a place of interest for volcanologists, botanists, and biologists alike.

Midtown Manhattan is the central portion of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Midtown is home to some of the city's most iconic buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, the headquarters of the United Nations, Grand Central Terminal, and Rockefeller Center, as well as Broadway and Times Square.

Lexington Avenue, often colloquially abbreviated as Lex, is an avenue on the East Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City that carries southbound one-way traffic from East 131st Street to Gramercy Park at East 21st Street. Along its 5.5-mile (8.9-kilometer), 110-block route, Lexington Avenue runs through Harlem, Carnegie Hill, the Upper East Side, Midtown, and Murray Hill to a point of origin that is centered on Gramercy Park. South of Gramercy Park, the axis continues as Irving Place from 20th Street to East 14th Street.
Lexington Avenue was not one of the streets included in the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 street grid, so the addresses for cross streets do not start at an even hundred number, as they do with avenues that were originally part of the plan.

For decades homeless people in New York have sought shelter in the maze of railway and subway tunnels that run beneath the city.
Their underground existence - one of almost total isolation from the outside world - has become a legend among New Yorkers.
Over the years, many have built subterranean homes where they cook, care for pets and work hard to keep out the bitter cold. And they've ignored attempts to shift them.
But now, the Amtrack railway company which owns the tunnels has decided it wants the tunnel dwellers out once and for all.
Few passers-by ever notice the tunnel dwellers slipping through these gates and descending to their underworld community.
New Yorkers know they're there, but few spare them a thought and even fewer have ever encountered them or seen how they live.
Down below, the tunnel dwellers have collected the trappings of everyday life.
Once underground, a tunnel dweller's biggest worry is watching out for the trains that speed by at 70 miles an hour. (110 kilometres per hour)
But that danger aside, some say they prefer living here, away from the chaos of modern society.
SOUNDBITE:
I basically simplified this existence. One has to be resourceful and that's the key to it all. Boiling water are the few necessities in this existence. I had ten, 12 people dwelling here for about a two-year time period.

There's a rigorous routine to life underground; although the tunnels provide shelter, they are not warm.
Bernard's biggest priority is collecting enough wood each day to keep the fire going.
He also gets up in the early hours each day to go out to collect bottles and cans for recycling.
That's how he makes money for food and other necessities.
The hard grind means there's no time for drugs and alcohol.
Bernard and his neighbors are strictly anti-substance abuse and wouldn't welcome addicts into their midst.
Many people would find it hard to comprehend why anyone would chose to live underground.
But Margaret Morton, a photojournalist who has recently published a book about life in tunnels, has come to understand it.

Homeless people, interestingly enough, have created their own housing, they've created a place for themselves along the street, and they found that, ironically, it creates a situation that's much closer to what one could have in an apartment because they can have their own possessions, they can have their own furniture - a table, a chair, a desk, a bed. They can have pets, which they can't have in a shelter, and they can have a sense of community.

Bernard has been in the tunnel for about ten years.
But soon he will be leaving, not only because Amtrak is asking him to, but because he feels ready for a new challenge.
His former neighboUr, Bob Kalinski, moved out two months ago into housing provided by the city for former homeless people like the tunnel dwellers.
He's enjoying his life above ground, but it's been a big adjustment.

Our average was zero to ten below. We were built, we were bundled for it and used to it and so I never had a cold. You know, it's just the idea, it wore on me after a while. The constant getting up... times I didn't want to go out... wasn't feeling good. Then after I had a heart attack it was kind of hard for me, even though we still did it.

The city has started a programme to get homeless people out of shelters and off the streets and into decent, affordable housing.
Bob got moved quickly, but Bernard, one of the first to sign up, is still waiting.
Others, however, don't want to move.

The Man Behind New York's Central Park and Prospect Park, Stanford University Campus (1999)
Frederick Law Olmsted (April 26, 1822 – August 28, 1903) was an American landscape architect, journalist, social critic, and public administrator. He is popularly considered to be the father of American landscape architecture. Olmsted was famous for co-designing many well-known urban parks with his senior partner Calvert Vaux, including Prospect Park and Central Park in New York City,[2] as well as Elm Park (Worcester, Massachusetts), considered by many to be the first municipal park in America.
Other projects that Olmsted was involved in include the country's first and oldest coordinated system of public parks and parkways in Buffalo, New York; the country's oldest state park, the Niagara Reservation in Niagara Falls, New York; one of the first planned communities in the United States, Riverside, Illinois; Mount Royal Park in Montreal, Quebec; the Emerald Necklace in Boston, Massachusetts; Highland Park in Rochester, New York; Belle Isle Park, in the Detroit River for Detroit, Michigan; the Grand Necklace of Parks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Cherokee Park and entire parks and parkway system in Louisville, Kentucky; the 735-acre (297 ha) Forest Park in Springfield, Massachusetts, featuring America's first public wading pool;[3] the George Washington Vanderbilt II Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina; the master plans for the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Maine, and Stanford University near Palo Alto, California as well as for The Lawrenceville School; and Montebello Park in St. Catharines, Ontario. The quality of Olmsted's landscape architecture was recognized by his contemporaries, who showered him with prestigious commissions. His work, especially in Central Park in New York City, set a standard of excellence that continues to influence landscape architecture in the United States. His second line of achievement involves his activism in conservation, including work at Niagara Falls, the Adirondack region of upstate New York, and the National Park system. Thirdly, he played a major role in organizing and providing medical services to the Union Army in the Civil War.
In Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City, Olmsted is featured as one of the most important figures participating in the design of the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. In the book, his personality and actions are given significant coverage. In addition, his importance in designing the fair is highlighted (e.g., his part in picking the geographic site and his bureaucratic involvement in planning the fair).
