Sitting at the Feet of Our Elders. A Moment in the Life of @Prof_JamesSmall w/ @SalimAdofo
Professor James Small was born in 1945, on Arcadia plantation, located on the banks of the Waccamaw River. This Lowland rice plantation is located where the Waccamaw, Peedee, and Black Rivers converge to meet the Atlantic Ocean, on the shores of historic Georgetown, South Carolina. Prof. Small was born to a family that traces their descent from enslaved Africans, to the Yoruba, Akan, and Ewe people of West Africa. Prof. Small's heritage also stems from the Native American ancestors that inhabited these South Carolinian shores. Both his maternal great-grandmother and his paternal great-grandmother were members of the Chicora Nation, and made their home along the mighty Waccamaw River.
Prof. Small graduated from the all Black Howard High School in Georgetown, South Carolina in 1964. He then served in the U.S. Navy for two years during the Vietnam era. Upon his release from military service, Prof. Small moved to New York City where he joined the Organization of Afro-American Unity founded by the legendary Malcolm X. In 1967, Prof. Small became Imam (minister) of the Muslim Mosque Incorporated, also founded by Malcolm X. In 1975 Prof. Small traveled to the Holy City of Mecca in Saudi Arabia to make his holy pilgrimage, the Hajjah.
For eleven years, Prof. Small served as principal bodyguard to the late Ella L. Collins, the sister of Malcolm X, the then President of the Organization of Afro-American Unity (O.A.A.U.). Between the years of 1966 and 1980, Prof. Small held membership in the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (S.N.C.C.), the N.A.A.C.P, Uhuru fighters and O.A.A.U. During this period Prof. Small had the opportunity to interact with such historical giants as Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Kwame Ture, H. Rap Brown of S.N.C.C, Eldridge Cleaver, Zaid Shakur, and Lumumba Shakur of the Black Panther Party (B.P.P.) in which he served as a liaison between the B.P.P. and the O.A.A.U.
Prof. Small has been a member of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilization (A.S.C.A.C.) for 14 years. He served as President of A.S.C.A.C. Eastern Region for two years, where he worked and studied with Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Dr. Yosef A. A. ben Jochannan, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, Dr. Ivan Van Sertima, Dr. Asa Hilliard, Dr. Wade Nobles, Dr. Amos Wilson and Dr. Francis Cress Welsing, just to name a few.
Prof. Small taught for nearly twenty years at the City University of New York, including 17 years at the City College of New York's Black Studies Department, thirteen of those years also serving as an administrator and two years at New York City Technical College. Prof. Small has taught courses on Malcolm X, Traditional African Religion (Prof. Small is a priest in the Yoruba religion), Pan Africanism, Crime in the Urban Community, Urban Crisis and Issues, and African Folklore. Prof. Small has also appeared on a number of network talk shows and newsmagazines. These include the Phil Donahue Show, The Rolanda Watts Show, The Geraldo Rivera Show, Matt Lauer Nine Broadcast Plaza Show, The Charlie Rose Show, Tony Brown's Journal, Like it Is with Gil Noble as well as numerous cable programs and local, national and international television and radio shows.
Prof. Small has lectured at some of the most prestigious colleges and universities in the world. Among the many colleges and universities where Prof. Small has lectured at are the University of Manchester, Manchester England. University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, V.I. University of the West Indies Porte-Spain, Trinidad; University of West Indies; Kingston Jamaica, Princeton University Princeton, N.J., Harvard University Boston, Mass., Yale University, New Haven, Conn., Columbia University and New York University of New York, N.Y. to mention a few.
Prof. Small is currently conducting educational and cultural tours throughout Africa and the United States.
Prof. James Small has been married for over 32 years to Carol Tondu-Small, M.D. They have four children.
Small space living: my NYC studio apartment
My favorite renter-friendly things I use to decorate my apartment:
Want to see what I'm up to day to day? Follow me on Instagram:
The first thing I do when moving into a new apartment is to switch out all the incandescent light bulbs for LED light bulbs. They last longer and consume less energy so you save money in the long run. I like to buy dimmable ones because they can be used with any type of light switch. I've also recently started using smart LED bulbs you can control with your smart phone but they also work with Alexa or Google Assistant.
Wall mounted switch and plug-in receiver :
My life changed for the better when I discovered wall mounted switches and plug-in receivers and I've used these in just about every home I've lived in since! They give you the ability to add a light switch anywhere to control plug-in lamps. You simply plug the receiver into an outlet and then plug your lamp into the receiver. Then you place the light switch anywhere you want in the room.
Easy Plug-in Dimmer Switch:
Having light switches with dimmers makes it easy to change the mood of a space - it's fairly easy to switch out regular switches to dimmable ones, but an quick alternative is to use plug-in dimmer switches instead. You simply plug the lamp into the switch, plug the switch into an outlet and you’re done! Just be sure you select the right one depending on wether you have incandescent or LED lightbulbs.
Thanks to these things and many DIY projects, I completely transformed my small NYC studio apartment into a functional, stylish & livable space, & then transformed it back to its original state: It was a wonderful place to call home for the past 3 years - no only was it the inspiration for Engineer Your Space, it was also the source of many of the projects you've seen on the show. But it's now time for a change, and before I make the move to my new home in sunny California, I want to take you on a tour of my rental apartment.
You'll see how I made small space living work for me using DIY home décor projects to make my small studio apartment a beautiful and functional place to live and work. One of the main things I did was create distinct areas like an entryway and a bedroom that are visually separate from the rest of the apartment using bookcases and a hanging wall divider from IKEA. From removing closet doors to making my own custom lighting, there is no shortage of DIY projects in my studio apartment. All of these projects were easy to build in my apartment, easy to take apart, and left the apartment exactly the way it was when I moved in, ensuring I got my safety deposit back!
I hope you enjoy the tour of my apartment and that you can use some of these studio apartment ideas to decorate your rental like you own it!

The Star Spangled Banner Song:
Written by: Francis Scott Key
HISTORY:
The Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem of the United States of America. The lyrics come from Defence of Fort McHenry,[1] a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships in Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.
The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. The Anacreontic Song (or To Anacreon in Heaven), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed The Star-Spangled Banner, it would soon become a well-known American patriotic song. With a range of one and a half octaves, it is known for being difficult to sing. Although the poem has four stanzas, only the first is commonly sung today.
The Star-Spangled Banner was recognized for official use by the Navy in 1889, and by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution on March 3, 1931 (46 Stat. 1508, codified at 36 U.S.C. § 301), which was signed by President Herbert Hoover.

SCRIPT
Members of the Israel United Christ Church rallied in Ferguson on Saturday, close to the site where unarmed 18-year-old African-American teenager Michael Brown was shot dead by white police officer, Darren Wilson, on August 9.
The rally comes on the same day Missouri Governor Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency at a tense press conference, and imposed a curfew in Ferguson to begin at midnight. Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Ronald S. Johnson said that the Highway Patrol would enforce the curfew that will begin at midnight local time (0500 GMT) and last until 5am (1000 GMT).
Heavily-militarised police squads are currently patrolling Ferguson, and are armed with pistols, short-barrelled 5.56-mm assault rifles with several magazines capable of holding 30 rounds each. Also deployed are Lenco Bearcat armoured vehicles, capable of carrying up to ten officers and featuring equipped with M60, 240B and Mark 19 weapons systems.
Racial tensions remain high in Ferguson one week after the fatal shooting of Brown. Just three of the Ferguson Police Department's 53 members are African-American, while according to U.S. Census statistics, nearly 70 percent of Ferguson's 21,000 population are of Afro-American descent.

The Straw That Stirs The Drink | Dan Smalls | TEDxUtica
Dan talks about reviving a somewhat stagnant upstate concert scene - looking at it from new eyes and in a new way. About breaking down walls of how it used to be done and creating partnerships with venues, national touring acts and their managers, agents, and saying no to the status quo --- breaking the luddite rules of an ever changing industry. About finding a place to thrive under the corporate mindset that dominates an industry... About creating something from the ashes and embers of something that once was in Ithaca and now growing that to the entire northeast.
Dan Smalls is the president of Dan Smalls Presents, a concert promotion company based out of Ithaca New York. His company books shows from Boston to Buffalo in venues like the State Theatre, Brewery Ommegang, Ani Difranco’s Asbury Hall, Daryl Hall’s club in Pawling and so on. His career has spanned over 25 years in positions from talent buyer to booking agent to festival producer, most notably part of the team that produced Phish’s first 6 festivals. His philosophy is to produce small but perfect events and work with acts he respects and that share his passion for the experience of the fans and artists alike.

Biggie Speaks On 2Pac's Death (1997) [The Last Interview]
The Notorious B.I.G. Last Interview 1997 (Rap City 1997).
Christopher George Latore Wallace (May 21, 1972 – March 9, 1997), better known by his stage names The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie, or Biggie Smalls, was an American rapper. He is ranked by Billboard magazine as among the ten greatest rappers of all time.
Wallace was raised in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. When he released his debut album Ready to Die in 1994, he became a central figure in the East Coast hip hop scene and increased New York City's visibility in the genre at a time when West Coast hip hop was dominant in the mainstream. The following year, Wallace led his childhood friends to chart success through his protégé group, Junior M.A.F.I.A. While recording his second album, Wallace was heavily involved in the growing East Coast–West Coast hip hop feud.
After the release of Who Shot Ya?, which Shakur interpreted as a diss song mocking about his robbery, 2Pac appeared on numerous tracks aiming threatening and/or antagonistic insults at Biggie, Bad Boy as a label, and anyone affiliated with them from late 1995 to 1996. Examples include the songs Against All Odds, Bomb First (My Second Reply) and Hit 'Em Up. During this time the media became heavily involved and dubbed the rivalry a coastal rap war, reporting on it continually. This caused fans from both scenes to take sides.
Although an official retaliation record was never released by the Brooklyn MC in response to Shakur's slurs, a certain number of Biggie's lyrics were interpreted by listeners as subliminal shots aimed at Shakur, in particular the track Long Kiss Goodnight, which Lil' Cease claimed was about 2Pac in an XXL interview. Puffy, however, steadfastly denied this theory, affirming that if Biggie were to diss 2Pac, he would have called him out by name.
On September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur was fatally shot in a shooting at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Six months after Tupac's death, on March 9, 1997, The Notorious B.I.G. was k*lled in a shooting in Los Angeles, California.
His double-disc album Life After Death, released 16 days after Biggie had passed, rose to No. 1 on the U.S. album charts and was certified Diamond in 2000 by the Recording Industry Association of America, one of the few hip hop albums to receive this certification. Wallace was noted for his loose, easy flow, dark semi-autobiographical lyrics and storytelling abilities, sometimes changing his pitch on songs. Three more albums have been released since his death. He has certified sales of 17 million units in the United States. #hiphopuniverse #hiphopspecials

As Protests Sweep Country, New Video Shows Off-Duty NY Cop Fatally Shooting Black Man Delrawn Small
- Protests against police brutality erupted across the United States over the weekend, with tens of thousands of people taking to the streets and blocking roads, bridges and highways in more than a dozen U.S. cities. Hundreds of people were arrested nationwide. The protests were sparked by the police killing of two African American men last week — Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota. But another recent police shooting has gone largely unnoticed by national media. On July 4, off-duty New York police officer Wayne Isaacs shot and killed Delrawn Small, an unarmed African American man. Police officers initially claimed Small punched officer Isaacs in the face following a driving confrontation. But surveillance video that has just been released counters that claim, and instead shows the off-duty officer shooting Small within one second of Small approaching the vehicle. For more we speak with Roger Wareham, the attorney representing Delrawn Small’s family.
