Saint Thomas Church, located at the corner of 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue in the borough of Manhattan in New York, New York in the United States, is an Episcopal parish church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. It is also known as Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue or as Saint Thomas Church in the City of New York and was incorporated on 9 January 1824. The current structure, completed in 1914, is the fourth church built to house this congregation and was designed by the architects Ralph Adams Cram and Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue in the French High Gothic Revival style.
The church is home to the Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, a choral ensemble comprising men and boys which performs music of the Anglican tradition at worship services and offers a full concert series during the course of the year. The boys of the Saint Thomas Choir (as the men are professional singers) are enrolled at the Saint Thomas Choir School, the only church-affiliated residential choir school in the United States.
The present church, a designated New York landmark, was built from 1911 to 1913, designed by a partnership of Ralph Adams Cram, who also designed the Princeton University chapel, and Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, who designed nearby St. Bartholomew's church. Lee Lawrie designed the many sculptures and decorations, most notably the 60 figures of the magnificent reredos, which is 80 feet (24 m) high. Prior to working together on Saint Thomas Church, Lawrie and Goodhue worked together on El Fureidis, an estate located in Montecito, California. First designs date from 1906, the church opened for services in 1913. Its magnificence is the happy result of a dramatic, impulsive act of compassion: The 1906 San Francisco earthquake had so shocked the rector, Rev. Ernest Stires, that he rushed the accumulated balance in his parish's building fund to aid the stricken city. Throughout New York and beyond, an impressed public responded in kind to his generosity with unsolicited gifts that more than replenished the fund.
This masterpiece of a city church, with bold massing and a strong profile, has plain ashlar limestone exterior surfaces and sandstone interior surfaces in French High Gothic style, embellished with dense French Flamboyant Gothic detail in the window tracery, in the small arches of the triforium, and in the rich stonework of the reredos, where Bertram Goodhue's original genius in decoration, and sculpture designed, by Lee Lawrie, are inspired by the altar screen at Winchester Cathedral in England.
Saint Thomas church is characterized by a high main arcade and an open triforium, and clerestory. Making the most of a restricted rectangular urban corner site with no space for transepts, St. Thomas has the scale of a large parish church (which it is), and, except for its foreshortened length, the proportions of major European and English cathedrals, with nave vaults 95 feet (29 m) high.

Donald Trump is kicking off Christmas by attending midnight services at an Episcopal church in Palm Beach, Florida.
The president-elect and his wife, Melania, arrived Saturday night at the Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea. The soon-to-be first couple were married at the church in 2005.
Trump has bemoaned the increased use of the term Happy Holidays in place of Merry Christmas as a sign that Christianity is under attack. As president, he's said, he'll reverse the trend.
The president-elect is spending the holidays at his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago, where he's been holding meetings with senior staff, advisers and business executives.
Trump tweeted wishes for a Happy Hanukkah earlier Saturday.

The Democratic National Committee is criticizing President-elect Donald Trump for not doing more to address potential conflicts of interest as he prepares to assume the presidency.
Trump said Saturday that he will dissolve the Donald J. Trump Foundation amid efforts to eliminate any conflicts of interest.
In a response, the Democratic National Committee is dismissing Trump's move as a wilted fig leaf to cover up his remaining conflicts of interest and his pitiful record of charitable giving.
The statement from Democratic Party spokesman Eric Walker also says that closing a charity is no substitute for divesting from his for-profit business and putting the assets in a blind trust. The party says doing that is the only way to guarantee separation between the Trump administration and the Trump business.

One of Donald Trump's senior communications staffers says he will not take the job of White House communications director after all.
Jason Miller said in a statement Saturday that he's decided not to accept the role offered to him by Trump so he can spend more time with his family.
Miller was one of the main spokesmen for Trump's transition team. He says he and his wife are expecting their second daughter in January and this is not the right time to start a new job.
He says that after spending the past week with his family, it is clear they need to be my top priority right now.
Miller says he has handed all of his responsibilities to incoming White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who will serve as communications director as well as press secretary.

Donald Trump says the decision by the United Nations to condemn Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem will make it much harder to negotiate peace.
The president-elect took to Twitter on Saturday, a day after the U.N. Security Council vote on the settlements.
Trump says that the decision is too bad, but we will get it done anyway.
Trump didn't elaborate, but a move by the Obama administration to abstain from Friday's U.N. vote brushes aside Trump's demands that the U.S. exercise its veto and provided a climax to years of icy relations with Israel's leadership.
Trump told The Associated Press a year ago that he wanted to be very neutral on Israel-Palestinian issues. But his tone on the issue became decidedly more pro-Israel as the presidential campaign progressed. He has spoken disparagingly of Palestinians, saying they have been taken over by or are condoning militant groups.

President-elect Donald Trump says he will dissolve the Donald J. Trump Foundation amid efforts to eliminate any conflicts of interest before he takes office next month.
Trump said in a statement Saturday that his charitable foundation has done enormous good works over the years in contributing millions of dollars to countless worthy groups, including supporting veterans, law enforcement officers and children.
He said that given the conflicts of interest, he will pursue philanthropic efforts in other ways, without elaborating on how he'd do so.
Trump said he's directed his counsel to take the necessary steps to implement the dissolution.
The revelation comes a day after Trump lamented the fact that his son Eric would be stepping away from his charitable foundation due to conflicts of interest.

President-elect Donald Trump is vowing to expand America's nuclear capacity while simultaneously urging Russia to avoid an alternate path away from stability and cooperation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a letter to Trump that relations between Russia and the U.S. remain an important factor in ensuring stability and security in the modern world.
Trump said in response that he hopes both sides are able to live up to these thoughts, and we do not have to travel an alternate path.

2015 marks the third annual March for Marriage and this is the most critical march ever. It is our last, best opportunity to reach the U.S. Supreme Court before they decide whether marriage as it has existed throughout our history is unconstitutional. In recent months, activist federal judges across the country have issued illegitimate rulings redefining marriage against the will of 50 million state voters and legislators who voted to preserve marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The Supreme Court is finally expected to consider the issue this spring, with arguments expected in close proximity to the March for Marriage, and a decision expected by late June 2015.
The March for Marriage is a powerful demonstration to the media, opinion leaders, legislators and jurists that a majority of Americans still stand for marriage as it has been traditionally and historically defined and handed down through the centuries. A recent national survey found that 53% of American voters believe that marriage is only the union of one man and one woman, and that 61% of voters are opposed to the U.S. Supreme Court forcing states to require same-sex 'marriage.'
It's time for the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the legitimacy of state laws and constitutional provisions defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. This is what marriage intrinsically is, and any ruling forcing states to abandon this construct of marriage will not be legitimate.
The March for Marriage is poised to become an essential and indispensable vehicle for voicing the values of pro-marriage Americans in a way that cuts through the biased media narrative and demands hearing in the halls of power.

During his Apostolic visit to the United States, His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew described the moment as a Patriarchal Privilege and surprised the nearly 1,200 guests by honoring Anthony J. Limberakis, MD, National Commander of the Order of Saint Andrew, with the Athenagoras Human Rights Award. Dr. Limberakis became the 24th recipient of the Award and was honored for his leadership role to the Order and for his untiring devotion, love, and support to the Mother Church of Constantinople.
Previous recipients have included President Jimmy Carter, President George H.W. Eternal Father, Strong to Save
Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, particularly in the maritime armed services. Written in 1860, its author William Whiting was inspired by the dangers of the sea described in Psalm 107. It was popularised by the Royal Navy and the United States Navy in the late 19th century, and variations of it were soon adopted by many branches of the armed services in the United Kingdom and the United States. Services who have adapted the hymn include the Royal Marines, Royal Air Force, the British Army, the United States Coast Guard and the United States Marine Corps, as well as many navies of the British Commonwealth.
This hymn was among those sung on 9 August 1941,[15] at a church service aboard the Royal Navy battleship HMS Prince of Wales attended by Winston Churchill (who requested that the hymn be sung) and Franklin D. Roosevelt at the conference creating the Atlantic Charter.[16] It was also disputably the last song sung during the Sunday Church Service on 14 April 1912 aboard the RMS Titanic, just hours before it sank.
This hymn has been played or sung at a number of funerals for those who have served in or been associated with the US Navy. It was sung at the funeral of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, played by the Navy Band at the funeral of John F. Kennedy, sung at the funeral of Richard Nixon, and played by the Navy Band and the Coast Guard Band during the funeral of Ronald Reagan. Roosevelt had served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Kennedy was commanding officer of PT-109 in World War II, and Nixon served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater.[19] The hymn was also played to close the funeral of R. Buckminster Fuller, as well as at the Memorial Ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia, for the USS Cole after the bombing of the ship in October 2000. The hymn was also played at the funeral services of those killed among the crew of the USS Maine at the beginning of the Spanish–American War. It was performed by the US Navy Sea Chanters at the State Funeral of President Gerald R. Ford, who had served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. The hymn was sung by the congregation at the funeral of news broadcaster Walter Cronkite at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York City. This was the last hymn sung at the funeral of Claude Choules, the penultimate living veteran from WWI, at his funeral in Fremantle, Western Australia on 20 May 2011.
