St Marks Part 4--Tallahassee St. Marks Railroad
The Tallahassee St. Marks Railroad started in 1837, and is one of the oldest rail lines in the United States. It was operated as a rail line for almost 150 years! In the 1980s, it became Florida's first Rails-to-Trails trail way for hikers, joggers, and bikers.
St. Marks Lighthouse, Apalachee Bay, near Tallahassee, Florida, via DJI Phantom 3 drone
Florida's 2nd oldest lighthouse is an absolute treat to visit. Situated on an impressively large natural wildlife refuge, St. Mark's Lighthouse is awesome. The landscape it overlooks is quite different from any other lighthouse I've visited (and I've been to quite a few), which I truly didn't appreciate until seeing it from the drone's perspective.
The area is immaculately cared for, with not a single speck of garbage or tired structure to be seen. There are several trails in the area, and I reckon a full day could easily be spent taking in all the refuge has to offer. Unfortunately, it was a quick stop for us while travelling from Orlando to Fort Walton (I love lighthouses!), so we didn't explore beyond the lighthouse itself.
I was very impressed with the area, and would certainly not hesitate recommending it to others, especially if you like hiking, lighthouses and or Florida's wildlife (including gators, which I understand will sometimes lay out on the walking trails to sun themselves, though we didn't see any). Take the time to visit... you won't be disappointed.

One of Florida's best bike trails: The cool train trestle on Nature Coast Trail
The Nature Coast Trail is a high-quality rail-trail with a picturesque train trestle over the Suwanee River and some good scenery. Two great state parks are nearby: Manatee Springs for camping and Fanning Springs for cabins. It makes a great weekend for cyclists. More from Florida Rambler:
St.Mark's Florida sunsets lighthouses and pure beauty
Originally known as San Marcos de Apalache, this town was founded by the Spanish in the 17th century in what was then Spanish Florida. A long time has passed since St. Marks last had appreciable importance, but this place on Apalachee Bay in Florida's Big Bend is a very old and historic Gulf port. Fortifications built here by the Spanish in the 17th century, and rebuilt several times, provided the venue for force of arms repeatedly up through the American Civil War.
In the best-known incident, Andrew Jackson, in his cavalier incursion into Spanish Florida in 1818, executed British nationals Robert Chrystie Ambrister and Alexander George Arbuthnot at the old fort. This nearly embroiled the United States in international strife. San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park interprets the site of the old fort.
Today's St. Marks evidently has its roots in American commercial activity that took hold beneath the walls of the fort upon acquisition of Spanish Florida by the U.S. in 1821—before the settlement moved slightly up St. Marks River to the present position. Various articles in publications like Florida Historical Quarterly relate how the fort site later held a Government naval hospital to meet yellow fever emergencies in the merchant marine. And just afterward Confederate batteries were established on the site in the Civil War. Their earthworks remain and are interpreted in the historic state park. But the site also exhibits old Spanish stonework, and not far away (though inaccessible) just down St. Marks River are shallow Spanish quarries where this limestone was evidently obtained in the 1730s.
There are brief accounts of a stone tower the Spanish built (now long gone) close by the quarries. The tower apparently would have afforded a sea view. Some scholars have asserted that if the Spanish on any occasion placed torches in this tower, the structure would have been thus functioning as the first lighthouse in the New World. In any case, limestone quarried here by the Spanish did eventually help to make a lighthouse here—the St. Marks Light constructed about 1830 by the U.S. Government. The lighthouse stands, after a couple of reconstructions, at the mouth of the river six miles from town and accessible by road. The lighthouse is, like San Marcos de Apalache, on the National Register of Historic Places.
A railroad often cited as Florida's first connected the port of St. Marks with the territorial capital, Tallahassee, some 20 miles inland. The line was constructed about 1836, and until the Civil War it served in the export of Middle Florida's cotton through St. Marks.
Today the attraction of St. Marks for boaters, fishermen, and seafood lovers preserves a strong relationship with Tallahassee (as does the location of a generating plant for Tallahassee here). The now-abandoned rail line serves as the popular Tallahassee-St. Marks Historic Railroad State Trail—a paved 16+-mile bicycle and equestrian trail terminating at the St. Marks waterfront.
This section of the coast was surprised by the big storm surge of Hurricane Dennis in 2005. As on other occasions in its history, St. Marks was flooded badly with saltwater. A principal casualty this time was the landmark Posey's Oyster Bar --Home of the Topless Oyster. Attracting people from Tallahassee and elsewhere ever since the 1920s, this quaint establishment overhanging the river was one of the oldest businesses in Wakulla County. It enjoyed a measure of regional fame. Irreparably damaged, Posey's now belongs, with Ambrister and Arbuthnot and the Spanish, to the long history of St. Marks. Photo credit Rod Strickland

FAMU Way: More than a Road
Today, the City of Tallahassee opened the newest section of FAMU Way between Pinellas Street and Gamble Street. This portion of the road features a continuation of the amenities found in previously completed phases, including wide sidewalks, bike lanes, a multi-purpose trail, enhanced street lighting and lush landscaping.
The completion of the FAMU Way roadway extension to Gamble Street allows traffic to flow between Wahnish Way and Gamble Street without passing through nearby neighborhoods. It also provides motorists traveling between Lake Bradford Road and downtown an alternative to Gaines Street as an east-west connector.
In addition to the roadway extension, this phase of the project includes a new stormwater facility, called Tallahassee Junction. Designed as a neighborhood amenity, Tallahassee Junction offers a ¼-mile walking trail, water fountains, sheltered picnic areas, a bike repair station and a binocular station.
Another exciting feature completed with this phase of the project is Blueprint’s continuation of the Capital Cascades Trail. This section was the final piece needed to fully connect to the St. Marks Trail, which means residents can now walk and bike from Cascades Park to the coast, and anywhere in between, without ever needing to get in a lane with car traffic.
The next phase of FAMU Way will extend the roadway to connect with Lake Bradford Road. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2019.

Sunrise at St Marks Wildlife Refuge Florida MUST LISTEN the wild here
This is a great sunrise about 17 mins or so with some of the best sounds recorded in the wild. Every minute of the video sounds different, loud and full of wildlife. The funny part is I have not even realized most of these sounds until I dumped it on my computer. This is one of the greatest wildlife refuges in United States. Sits on 3 counties and home to many species of reptiles, birds, alligators, cats, panthers, deer, snakes, turtles, fish etc. Just think of a wild animal in their habitat and here they are.
At the time of the recording sun was scheduled to come up right around 6:54am. I started recording when I saw it and lasted about 17 mins or so. It is a bit long but you will hear and see so much in this video. A lot of loud birds since it is mating season for most of them. You will hear gators also. A lot of loud bugs in the video.
Enjoy it and please subscribe to my channel:

Paved bike paths on the Cross Florida Greenway
While the Cross Florida Greenway is known for outstanding off-road biking, there are now two bike paths for riders looking for a gentler experience. The long-standing Baseline Trail provides more than five miles in a series of loops. The new Santos Bike Path begins at Santos Trailhead and heads towards the Land Bridge. Plans are for it to fully extend to Pruitt Trailhead eventually; construction is underway for a paved ride to Ross Prairie, more than 20 miles round-trip.
