Dan Barasch: A park underneath the hustle and bustle of New York City
Dan Barasch and James Ramsey have a crazy plan—to create a park, filled with greenery, underneath New York City. The two are developing the Lowline, an underground greenspace the size of a football field. They're building it in a trolley terminal abandoned in 1948, using technology that harvests sunlight above-ground and directs it down below. It's a park that can thrive, even in winter.

Opening the Williamsburg Bridge
SUMMARY
The film was shot on the roadway of the newly constructed Williamsburg Bridge. The first people to come into view are press photographers carrying large wooden box cameras [Frame: 0690]. Next, a parade of dignitaries and military representatives, accompanied by members of the press [1310], is photographed passing the camera position led by a standard bearer whose banner reads MAYOR [0902]. The mayor of New York was Seth Low, a lame-duck at the time of filming, having been defeated in November, 1903 by George B. McClellan. The Williamsburg Bridge, a combined cantilever and suspension bridge, crosses the East River from Delancey and Clinton Streets, Manhattan, to Roebling and S. 5th Streets, Williamsburg. Built at a cost of twelve million dollars, it held two lanes of roadway, two L tracks, four trolley tracks, and two promenades. It was the largest suspension bridge in the world at the time.

After-Effects of the High Line
To mark the publication of Deconstructing the High Line: Postindustrial Urbanism and the Rise of the Elevated Park (Rutgers University Press), the Urban Democracy Lab at NYU is hosted a panel discussion with the book’s co-editors, cultural theorist Christoph Lindner (University of Oregon) and urban geographer Brian Rosa (Queens College/CUNY Graduate Center), along with sociologist Julia Rothenberg (Queensborough Community College). Exploring the after-effects of the High Line—both in New York City and beyond—these three urbanists will led a discussion on the consequences, implications, reverberations, and distortions implicated in the contemporary fascination with infrastructural re-use. Exploring questions about the cultural, social, economic, and physical transformations that surround the High Line and other similar projects, the panelists dissect the “High Line Effect.” Key themes are the relationship between parks creation and gentrification, infrastructural reuse, the aestheticization of post-industrial landscapes, and the explosion of projects mimicking the High Line in cities throughout the world.
