Across the U.S. Thousand+ Filipinos mobilized for United People's SONA 2019
TAMA NA! SOBRA NA! PEOPLE POWER NA!
Despite scorching temperatures, close to 200 Filipino activists gathered in front of the White House on Monday, July 22, just hours after Rodrigo Duterte gave his State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Quezon City, Philippines. Malaya Movement called for nation-wide actions joining together thousands of people from across the United States and globally for a United People’s State of the Nation Address to take action against Duterte’s dictatorship. In addition to Washington D.C., actions and events were held in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Honolulu.
President Duterte’s address was more of the same rambling claims of progress, open threats, and fake promises. We do know that he will continue his drug war against the poor, is pushing to displace hundreds of Filipinos to build airports and railways as part of his economic program “Build, Build, Build” and continue his subservience to China and the United States. Duterte claims that he will go the “peaceful way” and “in the privacy of a conference room than in a squabble in public,” regarding the escalated dispute with China over the territory of the West Philippine Sea after a Chinese ship crashed into a Filipino fishing boat leaving the 22 fishermen to drown. He claims he avoids saying anything to avoid war and conflict stating “War leaves widows and orphans in its wake.” However, Duterte is waging open warfare within his own country by continuing martial law in Mindanao which has been in place since 2017, forcing over 400,000 people to be displaced, bombing Marawi to pieces, and killing whole communities including women and children.

From Wikipedia:
Central Park is an urban park in Manhattan, New York City, located between the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, with an estimated 37.5–38 million visitors annually, and one of the most filmed locations in the world. Central Park is the fifth-largest park in New York City by area, covering 843 acres (3.41 km2).
Central Park was first approved in 1853 as a 778-acre (3.15 km2) park. In 1857, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and architect/landscape designer Calvert Vaux won a design competition to construct the park with a plan they titled the Greensward Plan. Construction began the same year, and the park's first areas were opened to the public in late 1858. Additional land at the northern end of Central Park was purchased in 1859, and the park was completed in 1876. After a period of decline in the early 20th century, New York City parks commissioner Robert Moses started a program to clean up Central Park. Another decline in the late 20th century spurred the creation of the Central Park Conservancy in 1980, which refurbished many parts of the park during the 1980s and 1990s.
Main attractions of the park include landscapes such as the Ramble and Lake, Hallett Nature Sanctuary, the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, and Sheep Meadow; amusement attractions such as Wollman Rink, Central Park Carousel, and the Central Park Zoo; formal spaces such as the Central Park Mall and Bethesda Terrace; and the Delacorte Theater, which hosts Shakespeare in the Park programs in the summertime. The park also has sports facilities, including the North Meadow Recreation Center, basketball courts, baseball fields, and soccer fields.
Central Park was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1963 and as a New York City scenic landmark in 1974. The park is owned by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks) but has been managed by the Central Park Conservancy since 1998, under contract with the municipal government in a public-private partnership. The Conservancy, a non-profit organization, contributes 75 percent of Central Park's $65 million annual budget and is responsible for all basic care of the park.

Strolling round the Pond, Central Park, Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA
The Pond is one of Central Park's seven naturalistic water bodies. Despite the millions of visitors who walk by the water's edge each year, you can still find a sense of solitude. It's hard to believe that this setting -- like almost all of Central Park -- is completely man-made.
At the northeast end of the Pond is Gapstow Bridge. Across the simple stone bridge is a fenced-in, wooded promontory that juts into the water. This is Hallett Nature Sanctuary. Behind Hallett's gates is a 3.5-acre ecosystem that mimics the wild, where small animals and birds can thrive in a secluded habitat.

Central Park is an urban park in Manhattan, New York City, U.S. state of New York. It comprises 843 acres (341 ha) between the Upper West Side and Upper East Side, roughly bounded by Fifth Avenue on the east, Central Park West (Eighth Avenue) on the west, Central Park South (59th Street) on the south, and Central Park North (110th Street) on the north. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, with 40 million visitors in 2013, and one of the most filmed locations in the world.
The park was established in 1857 on 778 acres (315 ha) of land acquired by the city. ⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking Jersey City, NJ (Narrated) : Newport, Hudson Exchange, The Waterfront, Exchange Place
Google Maps Route:
Enjoy this walk of Jersey City, New Jersey, only a short ride away from the NYC borough of Manhattan. I stick to the waterfront, visiting Newport, Hudson Exchange, and Exchange Place.
From Wikipedia
Jersey City is the second most populous city in the U.S. state of New Jersey, after Newark. It is the seat of Hudson County as well as the county's largest city. As of 2018, the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program calculated that Jersey City's population was 265,549, with the largest population increase of any municipality in New Jersey since 2010, an increase of about 9.4% from the 2010 United States Census, when the city's population was at 247,597, ranking the city the 78th-most-populous in the nation.
Part of the New York metropolitan area, Jersey City is bounded on the east by the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay and on the west by the Hackensack River and Newark Bay. A port of entry, with 30.7 miles (49.4 km) of waterfront[34] and extensive rail infrastructure and connectivity, the city is an important transportation terminus and distribution and manufacturing center for the Port of New York and New Jersey. Jersey City shares significant mass transit connections with Manhattan. Redevelopment of the Jersey City waterfront has made the city one of the largest centers of banking and finance in the United States and has led to the district being nicknamed Wall Street West.
After a peak population of 316,715 measured in the 1930 Census, the city's population saw a half-century-long decline to a nadir of 223,532 in the 1980 Census. Since then, the city's population has rebounded, with the 2010 population reflecting an increase of 7,542 (+3.1%) from the 240,055 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 11,518 (+5.0%) from the 228,537 counted in the 1990 Census.

About Central Park:
Central Park is an urban park in Manhattan, New York City. It is located between the Upper West Side and Upper East Side, roughly bounded by Fifth Avenue on the east, Central Park West (Eighth Avenue) on the west, Central Park South (59th Street) on the south, and Central Park North (110th Street) on the north. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States, with an estimated 37–38 million visitors annually, and one of the most filmed locations in the world. In terms of area, Central Park is the fifth largest park in New York City, covering 843 acres (341 ha).
Central Park was first approved in 1853 as a 778-acre (315 ha) park.
Main attractions of the park include the Ramble and Lake; several amusement attractions including Wollman Rink, Central Park Carousel, and the Central Park Zoo; Sheep Meadow; the Central Park Mall; Bethesda Terrace; the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir; and the Delacorte Theater that hosts Shakespeare in the Park programs in the summertime. The park also has sports facilities, including the North Meadow Recreation Center, basketball courts, baseball fields, and soccer fields.
Central Park was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1963 and as a New York City scenic landmark in 1974. The park is owned by New York City Department of Parks and Recreation (NYC Parks), but has been managed by the Central Park Conservancy since 1998, under contract with the municipal government in a public-private partnership. The Conservancy, a non-profit organization, contributes 75 percent of Central Park's $65 million annual budget and is responsible for all basic care of the park.

About Roosevelt Island:
Roosevelt Island is a narrow island in New York City's East River, within the borough of Manhattan. It lies between Manhattan Island to its west and the borough of Queens, on Long Island, to its east. Running from the equivalent of East 46th to 85th Streets on Manhattan Island, it is about 2 miles (3.2 km) long, with a maximum width of 800 feet (240 m), and a total area of 147 acres (0.59 km2). Together with Mill Rock, Roosevelt Island constitutes Manhattan's Census Tract 238, which has a land area of 0.279 sq mi (0.72 km2), and had a population of 9,520 as of the 2000 United States Census. It had a population of 11,661 as of the 2010 United States Census.
The island was called Minnehanonck by the Lenape and Varkens Eylandt (Hog Island) by New Netherlanders, and during the colonial era and later as Blackwell's Island. It was known as Welfare Island when it was used principally for hospitals, from 1921 to 1973. It was renamed Roosevelt Island (after Franklin D. Roosevelt) in 1973.
Roosevelt Island is owned by the city but was leased to the New York State Urban Development Corporation for 99 years in 1969. Most of the residential buildings on Roosevelt Island are rental buildings. There is also a cooperative named Rivercross and a condominium building named Riverwalk. One rental building (Eastwood) has left New York State's Mitchell-Lama Housing Program, though current residents are still protected. It is now called Roosevelt Landings. There are attempts to privatize three other buildings, including the cooperative.

Most journeys begin at Penn Station or Grand Central, and if you arrive at the later you'll be wowed by the building. The Meatpacking District was once home to markets, slaughterhouses, and packaging plants, but times have changed. Today you'll find a mixture of trendy restaurants, clubs and boutiques. The Village used to be a bohemian neighborhood that drew artists and musicians, but today you're more likely to find upper middle class families living here. Completed in 1883, Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States. Williamsburg has become popular given its lower rent prices. University students and young professionals have been flocking to this part of town.
You can walk along the riverfront for a great view of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges and the Manhattan skyline. During the summer months, Bryant Park also becomes a popular hangout spot people looking to relax and even work on their tans. The Staten Island Ferry is free of charge and this makes it really popular with visitors who want to catch a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty from a distance. Battery Park is located on the southern tip of Manhattan. Having both lived in South Korea, we were thrilled to come across Manhattan's own Little Korea. Coney Island is all about good old fashioned fun. The Cloisters will make you feel like you've travelled over to Europe. Central Park is massive and there are so many places to visit within its boundaries. We managed to visit Belvedere Castle, the Great Lawn, Shakespeare Garden, The Ramble, The Jackie Onassis Reservoir, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, and we still left feeling like we barely scratched the surface.
And that concludes a look at our very busy week in New York City. I'm still shocked we managed to cover so many attractions, but the great thing about this city is that distances aren't very long and there's always something really cool worth checking out around each corner. Have you been to New York? What are your favorite things about this city? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Top 5 Filibusters in US Senate History
Texas Senator Wendy Davis spoke for more than 11 hours on Tuesday, in a filibuster to block a restrictive abortion bill. It was a gutsy effort! Now, the Run List will give you the top five filibusters in the history of the US Senate. How long can lawmakers ramble on for? Well, watch and you'll find out.
The filibuster is a way for senators to stall voting on a bill till the deadline for deciding has passed. This essentially kills the bill and makes it so that one or a few senators can knock down legislation they oppose.
The rules for the filibuster make it a test of endurance though. The senator has to stand for the entire duration of their speech and they cannot sit, lean, eat, or go to the bathroom. Oh, and did I mention they have to be talking the entire time? Unless they are asked a question the senator has to keep talking --about that subject--for as long as they their will and strength allow.
And believe it or not, there a handful of lawmakers who can just ramble on...and you're going to meet the top five in the history of the US Senate.
At number 5, US Senator William Proxmire of Wisconsin.
He spoke for 16 hours and 12 minutes in 1981 to stall debate on the increase of the public debt ceiling. He was concerned that the country was accumulating too much debt, so wanted to make sure lawmakers didn't authorize a total debt of $1 trillion. Ironically, he kinda spoke all the way through the night...meaning taxpayers had to pay tens of dollars to keep the chamber open all night.
Number 4, US Senator Robert La Follete Sr.
This senator, also from Wisconsin talked for 18 hours and 23 minutes back in 1908. His filibuster stalled debate on the Aldrich-Creeland currency bill. This bill would've allowed the US Treasury to lend currency to banks during fiscal crisis.
Okay, so 18 hours and 23 minutes, that's pretty good...but, not as good as our number 3 filibuster in the US senate. Senator Wayne Morse from Oregon.
He was known as something of a tiger in the Senate and apparently thrived on controversy. Back in 1953, Senator Morse spoke for 22 hours and 26 minutes to stop the Tidelands oil legislation of 1953. The bill would give States the rights to coastal land instead of the Federal government. Despite his attempt to bust the bill, it was in fact passed, as what's formally known as the 1953 Submerged Lands Act.
At number 2, please say hi to US Senator Alfonse D'Amato from New York
In 1986, the Brooklyn native spoke for 23 hours and 30 minutes against a military bill that would've cut funding for a jet trainer plane being built in his State. He's apparently known for doing these filibusters, and reportedly even read the DC phone book during one of these. Riveting stuff I'm sure.
And finally at number 1, the US senator who talked for the longest to stall a bill, Senators Strom Thurmond of South Carolina.
Senator Thurmond beat Senator Morse's record in 1957, by talking for more than an entire day against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
He argued for 24 hours and 18 minutes against a law proposed by the Eisenhower administration that would make voting laws less discriminatory.
He recited the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, and several other historical documents to help his case.
Most of the other senators had better sense, they passed the bill. On June 19th 1957.
Still, gotta give the guy some credit for his effort. I mean, talking for an entire day and then some...wow.
So, there you have it, the top five filibusters in the history of the US Senate. Politicians really can just go on and on and on and on....and.. [CUT to END CARD]
Tell us what you think about this rather peculiar process in the US democracy...I mean, holding the floor for hours on end so that other lawmakers can't debate over or vote on a bill?
And FYI - the list I just gave is only the record for the US Senate, so at the federal level. But this senator from Texas holds the overall top spot.
Mr Bill Meier spoke for a whopping 43 hours against a workers compensation bill. 43 hours, that's like....almost two days, standing, talking, without food...without sleep...without...a toilet break.....
2nd Amendment trashed by New York City Mafia giving police Monopoly on Force !
Here is a bogus story put out by the NYPD to give the spineless slaves of New York City something to talk about. The tyrants and dictators that run this city have used laws to disarm the law abiding citizens of New York leaving us at the mercy of criminals and ruthless police with monthly ticket and arrest quotas.
The gun laws in New York City are in full violation of the constitution infringing on New Yorker's right to bear arms while usurper Michael Bloomberg travels about with no less than 2 armed body guards to protect his worthless hide.
The NYPD would have you believe that unless some exemption is added to Governor Cuomo's new Hitler gun control bill allowing officers and mafia insiders to have magazines with more than a meager 7 bullets, they will be breaking the law and get in trouble ... Sure !
The NYPD is a criminal organization that has been caught on video tape countless times breaking law and almost always no one is held accountable. Don't let them insult your intelligence or waste your time with bullsh*t stories like this that mock the fact that you don't have the ability to protect yourself or your family.
The media demonizes guns and trains the population to be cowardly sheep instructed to hide under beds and in closets while waiting on a police officer with a gun to get there in time to save them. This is ridiculous, why not save your own life and call the police to come pick up the body of the assailant instead of yours.
The NYPD has 15 rounds of hollow point bullets to kill anyone they please, all they have to say is they saw a gun in your hand or they feared for their lives and they go home while you go to the morgue. We are repeating history and handing over our liberty and freedom in exchange for safety and security and we will get neither in the end.
Upper West Side Central Park & Foodie Afternoon - Christmas in New York City (NYC) Day 4
19TH DECEMBER – DAY 9
Our penultimate day in New York so it was definitely time to explore Central Park – we started South with lunch at SaraBeth’s and then strolled inside the park for a walk around stopping off at the natural history museum (which was huge!). After refuelling with coffee (at Zabars) and cookies (Levain Bakery) we returned to the park to continue exploring the ramble and other areas before it got dark. We finished the day with Ramen mmmmm before hitting the hay to rest our feet.
