USA: NEW YORK: MOLE PEOPLE SEEKING SHELTER IN RAILWAY TUNNELS
English/Nat
For decades homeless people in New York have sought shelter in the maze of railway and subway tunnels that run beneath the city.
Their underground existence - one of almost total isolation from the outside world - has become a legend among New Yorkers.
Over the years, many have built subterranean homes where they cook, care for pets and work hard to keep out the bitter cold. And they've ignored attempts to shift them.
But now, the Amtrack railway company which owns the tunnels has decided it wants the tunnel dwellers out once and for all.
Few passers-by ever notice the tunnel dwellers slipping through these gates and descending to their underworld community.
New Yorkers know they're there, but few spare them a thought and even fewer have ever encountered them or seen how they live.
Down below, the tunnel dwellers have collected the trappings of everyday life.
Once underground, a tunnel dweller's biggest worry is watching out for the trains that speed by at 70 miles an hour. (110 kilometres per hour)
But that danger aside, some say they prefer living here, away from the chaos of modern society.
SOUNDBITE:
I basically simplified this existence. One has to be resourceful and that's the key to it all. Boiling water are the few necessities in this existence. I had ten, 12 people dwelling here for about a two-year time period.
SUPER CAPTION: Bernard Isaac, Tunnel Dweller
There's a rigorous routine to life underground; although the tunnels provide shelter, they are not warm.
Bernard's biggest priority is collecting enough wood each day to keep the fire going.
He also gets up in the early hours each day to go out to collect bottles and cans for recycling.
That's how he makes money for food and other necessities.
The hard grind means there's no time for drugs and alcohol.
Bernard and his neighbors are strictly anti-substance abuse and wouldn't welcome addicts into their midst.
Many people would find it hard to comprehend why anyone would chose to live underground.
But Margaret Morton, a photojournalist who has recently published a book about life in tunnels, has come to understand it.
SOUNDBITE:
Homeless people, interestingly enough, have created their own housing, they've created a place for themselves along the street, and they found that, ironically, it creates a situation that's much closer to what one could have in an apartment because they can have their own possessions, they can have their own furniture - a table, a chair, a desk, a bed. They can have pets, which they can't have in a shelter, and they can have a sense of community.
SUPER CAPTION: Margaret Morton, Photojournalist
Bernard has been in the tunnel for about ten years.
But soon he will be leaving, not only because Amtrak is asking him to, but because he feels ready for a new challenge.
His former neighboUr, Bob Kalinski, moved out two months ago into housing provided by the city for former homeless people like the tunnel dwellers.
He's enjoying his life above ground, but it's been a big adjustment.
SOUNDBITE:
Our average was zero to ten below. We were built, we were bundled for it and used to it and so I never had a cold. You know, it's just the idea, it wore on me after a while. The constant getting up... times I didn't want to go out... wasn't feeling good. Then after I had a heart attack it was kind of hard for me, even though we still did it.
SUPER CAPTION: Bob Kalinski, Former Tunnel Dweller
The city has started a programme to get homeless people out of shelters and off the streets and into decent, affordable housing.
Bob got moved quickly, but Bernard, one of the first to sign up, is still waiting.
Others, however, don't want to move.

Grand Central Terminal - New York City New York
Grand Central Terminal (GCT) is a commuter (and former intercity) railroad terminal at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, United States. Built by and named for the New York Central Railroad in the heyday of American long-distance passenger rail travel, it is the largest such facility in the world by number of platforms with 44 serving 67 tracks along them. They are on two levels, both below ground, with 41 tracks on the upper level and 26 on the lower, though the total number of tracks along platforms and in rail yards exceeds 100. The terminal covers an area of 48 acres (19 ha).
The terminal serves commuters traveling on the Metro-North Railroad to Westchester, Putnam, and Dutchess counties in New York State, and Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. Until 1991 the terminal served Amtrak, which moved to nearby Pennsylvania Station upon completion of the Empire Connection.
Although the terminal has been properly called “Grand Central Terminal” since 1913, it has always been more colloquially and affectionately known as Grand Central Station, the name of the previous rail station on the same site, and of the U.S. Post Office station next door, which is not part of the terminal. It is also sometimes used to refer to the Grand Central – 42nd Street subway station, which serves the terminal.
Featuring monumental spaces and meticulously crafted detail, Grand Central Terminal has been described as the world's loveliest station. In 2011, travel magazine Travel + Leisure rated it the sixth-most-visited tourist attraction for its roughly 21.6 million annual visitors.
New York City Next Great Artist Competition, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Times Square, Corey Barksdale
coreybarksdale.com/media_kit/atlanta_artist_corey_barksdale_art_gallery.pdf
New York is the most populous city in the United States, and the center of the New York metropolitan area, which is one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. A leading global city, New York exerts a powerful influence over global commerce, finance, media, culture, art, fashion, research, education, and entertainment. As host of the United Nations Headquarters, it is also an important center for international affairs. The city is often referred to as New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the state of New York, of which it is a part.
Beautiful Brooklyn:
Brooklyn used to be a city by itself. It became part of NY over 100 years ago. Brooklyn has many interesting and sites. Just go over a bridge, take a bus or subway and you are there.
Street Art in New York:
Street art can be drawings on paper that have been wheat-pasted onto the side of a building; images stenciled right onto walls; sculptures screwed onto a stop sign pole; even tiles arranged to form 1980s video game aliens, which the French street artist, Space Invader, put up dozens of during a recent visit to the city. Did you notice? Thought not.
But a well-planned walk with a trained eye through neighborhoods like Chelsea, SoHo and the Lower East Side in Manhattan, and Williamsburg and Dumbo — especially near the waterfront — in Brooklyn can change that.
You can also load a Google map marked with Brooklyn and Manhattan hot spots (on Streetsy's About page). Dedicated students can move on to Flickr, the photo-sharing site, where searches for specific artists yield oodles of examples.
The Tree Museum:
Brilliant creations by artist Katie Holten who has tagged over 100 trees along the Grand Concourse — each with an accompanying audiocast by Bronxites who live(d) along or near the Concourse speaking their thoughts of the grand boulevard. Trees in the museum can be identified by a marker on the sidewalk bearing a phone # to call to hear the audiocast. Maps available at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. The Tree Museum was scheduled to close October 12th, but will remain open until January 3rd, 2010.
New York was founded as a commercial trading post by the Dutch in 1624. The settlement was called New Amsterdam until 1664 when the colony came under English control.[7] New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York City, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.
Many districts and landmarks in the city have become well known to outsiders. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Times Square, iconified as The Crossroads of the World, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theater district, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections.
Bill Powers, New York Gallery Owner:
China Chow, host and judge, lends her artistic grace to the second season of Bravo's cutting-edge competition that brings fine art dialogue to the forefront of pop culture. Returning to the judging panel is Bill Powers, a New York Gallery owner and literary art contributor, as well as Jerry Saltz, senior art critic for New York Magazine. World-renowned art auctioneer Simon de Pury adds his voice of expertise as a mentor to the contestants.
The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibition:
A twice-a-year happening every Memorial Day Weekend and the weekend that follows and every Labor Day Weekend and the weekend that follows that. The event showcases fine artists and craft artisans from around the New York metropolitan area, the nation and the world. Attendees come from all over and are a cosmopolitan mix, including art lovers, tourists, faculty and students from the area's many schools and professionals such as interior designers.
Selling Art on the Streets of New York:
What do I do if my art is ever confiscated by the police?
If the police ever confiscate your art or art display for violating
vending laws it is crucial that you get a voucher from them describing
in detail whatever they took. By law, you can get everything back
within 24 hours at the precinct it was taken to regardless of the
outcome of your summons case.

So, let’s plan our next road trip!!

Number 10: Castello Di Amorosa.
If you want the feel of an Italian wine farm in the beauty of the California landscape, then Castello Di Amorosa is just the place for you. Italian style architecture and fine Italian wines are all found just a few minutes outside the town of Calistoga, in the Napa Valley. Unlike most castles you may hear about, or could be lucky enough to come across in your lifetime, this castle’s construction began only in 1994 and was the vision of 4th generation Italian winemaker and entrepreneur Dario Sattui, who spent much of his life discovering medieval castles and wineries throughout Europe. He fell in love with 13th century Italian Tuscan style architecture, and took 14 years to complete the construction for its first opening in 2007.
Today, it continues the tradition it started in 2007 and is primarily a wine farm specializing in Italian wines, and often hosts parties and weddings alike on its premises. Interestingly, despite its use as a wine farm, this modern example of a castle comes complete with a drawbridge and a dungeon, as well as a torture chamber to further enhance the feeling that you are actually in a decades old castle. There is no mention on whether the dungeon or torture chambers are used on people who drink too much of their wine, though, so we suggest you proceed at your own risk!
Number 9: Boldt Castle.
Situated along the St Lawrence River, near New York City, the Boldt Castle lies among the spectacular “1,000 islands,” and construction of this property started back in the year 1900 by millionaire George Boldt. He wanted to build the castle as a tribute to his wife, and stated that it would rival any European castle of the time, but, unfortunately Boldt’s wife fell ill and passed away just months before completion. Devastated, Boldt halted all construction and never visited the island again, leaving the incomplete castle behind as a monument to his wife. From there, the castle would stand empty for 73 years, but, in 1977, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority decided to begin its restoration and, at last, the castle was built up to what it was meant to be. Today it is a popular tourist attraction and weddings are even regularly held on the island. This castle is a great example of the power of restoration and, even though it was only opened in the early 1980’s, it’s a great example of 20th century architecture combined with rustic beauty.
Number 8: Coral Castle.
Located just outside of Miami in Florida, the coral castle is very special for 2 reasons. First is that it is not strictly a “castle” at all! And, Second, because the entire project was done by just one man.
As we mentioned already, the Coral Castle is not really a castle but rather a collection of stones gathered in different shapes. Some of them do indeed resemble the shape of a house, complete with stone tables and chairs, while some of the others are just small piles of rocks that loosely resemble Stonehenge.
Also as we mentioned already, the entire place was built by just one man, a Mr. Edward Leedskalnin back in 1923. Interestingly, though, a lot of the construction here is shrouded in mystery due to Edward building it all by himself using nothing but ropes, pulleys, picks and winches to move some very large stones! In all, the construction of Coral Castle took 28 years for him to complete. Despite the name “Coral,” the castle was constructed entirely from limestone and, for decades, it had a perfectly balanced stone gate that was so easy to open that even a child could open the door with a slight push.
Today, though, the formerly perfectly balanced door’s hinge has finally rusted away. While it is still a great tourist attraction and people often stop by to admire the marvel that is the Coral Castle, the door takes a bit more effort to open.
Number 7: Bannerman Castle.
Located just 60 miles up the Hudson River from New York, there is a castle which today is only a shell of its former glory. Known as the Bannerman Castle, construction started in the early 1900’s, when it was one of the most spectacular sights of the time.
Empire State Building, New York, NYC Oct 2016
On this day in 1931, President Herbert Hoover officially dedicates New York City’s Empire State Building, pressing a button from the White House that turns on the building’s lights. Hoover’s gesture, of course, was symbolic; while the president remained in Washington, D.C., someone else flicked the switches in New York.
The idea for the Empire State Building is said to have been born of a competition between Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation and John Jakob Raskob of General Motors, to see who could erect the taller building. Chrysler had already begun work on the famous Chrysler Building, the gleaming 1,046-foot skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. Not to be bested, Raskob assembled a group of well-known investors, including former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith. The group chose the architecture firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon Associates to design the building. The Art-Deco plans, said to have been based in large part on the look of a pencil, were also builder-friendly: The entire building went up in just over a year, under budget (at $40 million) and well ahead of schedule. During certain periods of building, the frame grew an astonishing four-and-a-half stories a week.
At the time of its completion, the Empire State Building, at 102 stories and 1,250 feet high (1,454 feet to the top of the lightning rod), was the world’s tallest skyscraper. The Depression-era construction employed as many as 3,400 workers on any single day, most of whom received an excellent pay rate, especially given the economic conditions of the time. The new building imbued New York City with a deep sense of pride, desperately needed in the depths of the Great Depression, when many city residents were unemployed and prospects looked bleak. The grip of the Depression on New York’s economy was still evident a year later, however, when only 25 percent of the Empire State’s offices had been rented.
In 1972, the Empire State Building lost its title as world’s tallest building to New York’s World Trade Center, which itself was the tallest skyscraper for but a year. Today the honor belongs to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa tower, which soars 2,717 feet into the sky.The world-famous Empire State Building is a symbol of New York City and one of the world's most popular tourist attractions.

The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones.
