NEW YORK CITY (source Wikipedia):
The City of New York, often called New York City or simply New York, is the most populous city in the United States. With an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698 distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2), New York City is also the most densely populated major city in the United States. Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass and one of the world's most populous metacities, with an estimated 20.3 million people in 2017. A global power city, New York City has been described as the cultural, financial, and media capital of the world, and exerts a significant impact upon commerce, entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, and sports. The city's fast pace defines the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.
New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626. The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664 and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the Americas by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace.
Exploring New York City & Times Square Manhattan at Night
Exploring New York City & Times Square Manhattan at night was an amazing experience. From crazy to historic, New York city has it all Times Square in particular had a lot of both. Exploring Times Square at night was so much fun, always something exciting around every corner. Exploring New York city and Times Square Manhattan always uncovers new and exciting discoveries. In this documentary I talk about Times Square and it's history.
My script for the video: Times square has become an immortalized symbol of American resolve and innovation. Commencing from Dec 31rst 1904 was the origin of a distinctly timeless American tradition. the very first new years eve bash to ever occur in times square. Headquartered in the 375ft tall times tower was the local newspaper the New York Times. City cacophony was heard above as well as beneath the city. Underneath this building ran a section of the newly designed subway system. Trains traveled to and from the times tower basement, bearing information and various correspondents. In 1928 the very first electronic news display was attached to the times tower. Hundreds of onlookers would stand in the middle of the most cosmopolitan streets of new York. May 8th 1945 further inculcated the great sentimental importance of times square in the hearts of Americans everywhere.

New Year's Eve ball drop in Times Square ushers in 2019 in U.S.
Throngs of soggy revelers greeted 2019 after a rainy night in New York City's Times Square. Fireworks and the drop of a sparkling crystal ball marked the start of the new year in the eastern U.S. Many of the people in and around the square spent nearly half the day in the chilly rain waiting for the ball drop.

Walking in Times Square in 2001
While in New York in 2001, I took this short video while walking in a noisy Times Square.
Times Square is a major commercial intersection in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, USA, at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and stretching from West 42nd to West 47th Streets. Times Square, iconified as The Crossroads of the World and the The Great White Way, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theater district, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. According to Travel + Leisure magazine's October 2011 survey, Times Square is the world's most visited tourist attraction, bringing in over 39 million visitors annually.
Formerly named Longacre Square, Times Square was renamed in April 1904 after The New York Times moved its headquarters to the newly erected Times Building, which is now called One Times Square and is the site of the annual ball drop on New Year's Eve.
The northern triangle of Times Square is technically Duffy Square, dedicated in 1937 to Chaplain Francis P. Duffy of New York City's Fighting 69th Infantry Regiment; a memorial to Duffy is located there, along with a statue of George M. Cohan, and the TKTS discount theatre tickets booth. The stepped red roof of the TKTS booth also provides seating for various events. The Duffy Statue and the square were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
Times Square is the site of the annual New Year's Eve ball drop. On December 31, 1907, a ball signifying New Year's Day was first dropped at Times Square, and the Square has held the main New Year's celebration in New York City ever since. On that night, hundreds of thousands of people congregate to watch the Waterford Crystal ball being lowered on a pole atop the building, marking the start of the new year. It replaced a lavish fireworks display from the top of the building that was held from 1904 to 1906, but stopped by city officials because of the danger of fire. Beginning in 1908, and for more than eighty years thereafter, Times Square sign maker Artkraft Strauss was responsible for the ball-lowering. During World War II, a minute of silence, followed by a recording of church bells pealing, replaced the ball drop because of wartime blackout restrictions. Today, Countdown Entertainment and One Times Square handle the New Year's Eve event in conjunction with the Times Square Alliance.
New Year’s Eve 2020: Times Square Ball Is Ready for its Big Night | NBC New York
New York City’s counterterrorism czar expects Times Square to be “the safest place on the planet Earth” on New Year’s Eve. Thousands of police officers will be on duty for Tuesday night’s festivities, along with specialized units armed with long guns, bomb-sniffing dogs and other measures. For the first time, police drones are expected to keep watch over the confetti-filled celebration — a year late after rain grounded the department's unmanned eye-in-the-sky last year. This year's forecast calls for some clouds, but no rain and none of the bitter cold that iced out spectators two years ago.

STORYLINE:
Americans gathered on Tuesday to ring in 2003 at New Year's Eve celebrations that, in keeping with the times, were cost-conscious and security-aware.
There was a chance of rain in New York's Times Square, but the crystal, laser-lit ball that is dropped to count down the last seconds of the old year rises and falls no matter the weather.
The ball was set in motion this year by Mayor Bloomberg and actor Christopher Reeve's wife Dana. Reeve was by her side as she began the celebrations.
The Times Square 2003 Balloon Crew inflated ten-thousand red balloons to hand out to revellers, and a blizzard's worth of red, white and blue confetti was stockpiled on roofs.
But police also welded manholes shut and removed mailboxes from Times Square, and said undercover officers would mix with the crowd, expected to exceed 500-thousand.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said about 2,000 officers would be on duty, with sharpshooters stationed on roofs, and that security would be heightened at New York Harbour.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a low-level alert for New York's ports earlier in the day, saying an intelligence source had warned of eight diversionary attacks throughout the state before a possible harbour attack.
There was an uncorroborated report about New York Harbour, Kelly said, adding that pleasure craft had been barred from the harbour and additional police vessels had been deployed.
Revellers seemed unfazed by the tighter security. As 2002 dwindled and the crowd grew, they eagerly accepted the glittering blue-and-white pompoms Times Square employees handed them.
