New York, New York - Battery Park / Clinton Castle HD (2012)
New York, New York - Battery Park
Battery Park is a 25-acre (10 hectare) public park located at the Battery, the southern tip of Manhattan Island in New York City, facing New York Harbor. The Battery is named for artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city's early years in order to protect the settlement behind them. At the north end of the park is Castle Clinton, the often re-purposed last remnant of the defensive works that inspired the name of the park; Pier A, formerly a fireboat station; and Hope Garden, a memorial to AIDS victims. At the other end is Battery Gardens restaurant, next to the United States Coast Guard Battery Building. Along the waterfront, Statue Cruises offers ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The park is also the site of the East Coast Memorial which commemorates U.S. servicemen who died in coastal waters of the western Atlantic Ocean during World War II, and several other memorials.
To the northwest of the park lies Battery Park City, a planned community built on landfill in the 1970s and 80s, which includes Robert F. Wagner Park and the Battery Park City Promenade. Together with Hudson River Park, a system of greenspaces, bikeways and promenades now extend up the Hudson shoreline. A bikeway might be built through the park that will connect the Hudson River and East River parts of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway. Across State Street to the northeast stands the old U.S. Customs House, now used as a branch of the National Museum of the American Indian and the district U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Peter Minuit Plaza abuts the southeast end of the park, directly in front of the South Ferry Terminal of the Staten Island Ferry.

Reinventing New York Harbor | Rich Marin | TEDxStGeorge
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Harbors are like Batman, they need a Robin to compliment them. New York Harbor, the Gotham of global harbors, has St. George, but over the years this harbor has lost its southern end in the mist. Through the passion of the community and a panoply of developers and ferry companies, a world-class, iconic destination has been formulated for the southern end of the harbor, finally creating an amazing venue that will be a global showcase of technology, entertainment and design, anchored by the largest observation wheel in the world.
Richard A. Marin is a 38 year finance industry executive who is currently President and CEO of The New York Wheel, LLC. He was a member of the management committees at three major Wall Street firms and CEO of major commercial property developer. He also is involved in managing two private equity funds and teaching asset management at Cornell’s Johnson School of Management as a Clinical Professor. He recently published Global Pension Crisis: Unfunded Liabilities and How We Can Fill the Gap 2013 Wiley& Sons and speaks globally on this and related topics. He is a director of CARE, the global relief and development agency.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

History Made Vivid: The Interior Museum at 80
With the Interior Museum’s 80th anniversary in March 2018 comes the opportunity to reflect upon its innovative origins. Interior Secretary Harold Ickes envisioned the museum playing a key role at the new Interior headquarters, and when it opened in the midst of the Great Depression, it was a truly novel addition for a federal office building. Interior Museum Chief Curator Tracy Baetz will explore how one wing of the headquarters was popularly transformed into history made vivid. Get a glimpse of how state-of-the art exhibition techniques of the 1930s achieved groundbreaking results that highlighted what was important to the Department in the interwar period.

State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river you need a permit to do that...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie!
This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING!
In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts.
UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college.
Oregon Mining Law:
Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law:
ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, lawful mining operation means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws.
(2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally:
(a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or
(b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation.
(3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]

The 2018 Wilson Lecture: Al Gore
Wellesley welcomed former Vice President Al Gore to campus on April 25, 2018, to deliver this year’s Wilson Lecture. The annual Wilson Lecture, which brings internationally influential speakers to Wellesley, is the highlight of Wellesley’s academic calendar and its premier academic lecture.
The 45th vice president of the United States, Al Gore was inaugurated on January 20, 1993, and served eight years in the position. Previously, he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives beginning in 1976 and of the U.S. Senate from 1984 until he became vice president.
Gore is cofounder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, a senior partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and a member of Apple Inc.’s board of directors. He currently spends the majority of his time working with the Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit devoted to solving the climate crisis, of which he is the chairman.
The global leader in the fight to halt climate change, Gore will engage in a wide-ranging, candid conversation with Wellesley College Trustee Sue Wagner ’82 before answering questions from the community. Gore and Wagner, who are friends and colleagues, will discuss, with candor and conviction, what is at stake for us all.
NYSL: Lynden B. Miller on Parks, Plants, and People
An internationally renowned public garden designer with 29 years' experience and an artist's eye, Lynden Miller has changed the face of New York City's public places by providing a connection with nature for neighborhoods rich and poor. Parks, Plants and People describes the elements of successful public space and tells how to design, improve and maintain year-round plantings, how to advocate for increased public funding, and how to attract private dollars. Well-planted parks and gardens are essential urban oases that reduce crime and have positive effects on the economic welfare of cities and their citizens. Miller demonstrates the power of plants to soften and civilize public life and proves that beautiful public spaces have the power to transform the way people behave and feel about their cities. Her motto is: Make it gorgeous and they will come. Keep it that way and they will help.
Lynden B. Miller is a public garden designer and Director of The Conservatory Garden in Central Park, which she rescued and restored beginning in l982. Her work in New York City includes gardens for Bryant Park, The New York Botanical Garden, Wagner Park in Battery Park City, Madison Square Park, Columbia University, and Chelsea Cove Park on the Hudson River. She has designed landscape improvements to campuses at Stony Brook University on Long Island, Princeton University, and Hunter College, and plantings for the garden at the Museum of Modern Art. She is part of a team designing landscape and gardens for the United States Supreme Court.

SUMMARY
=======
German Americans (German: Deutschamerikaner) are Americans who have full or partial German ancestry. With an estimated size of approximately 44 million in 2016, German Americans are the largest of the self-reported ancestry groups by the US Census Bureau in its American Community Survey. German-Americans account for about one third of the total ethnic German population in the world.None of the German states had American colonies. In the 1670s, the first significant groups of German immigrants arrived in the British colonies, settling primarily in Pennsylvania, New York, and Virginia. Immigration continued in very large numbers during the 19th century, with eight million arrivals from Germany. Between 1820 and 1870 over seven and a half million German immigrants came to the United States. By 2010, their population grew to 49.8 million German Americans, reflecting a jump of 6 million people since 2000.
There is a German belt that extends all the way across the United States, from eastern Pennsylvania to the Oregon coast. Pennsylvania has the largest population of German-Americans in the U.S. and is home to one of the group's original settlements, Germantown (Philadelphia), founded in 1683 and the birthplace of the American antislavery movement in 1688, as well as the revolutionary Battle of Germantown. The state of Pennsylvania has 3.5 million people of German ancestry.
They were pulled by the attractions of land and religious freedom, and pushed out of Germany by shortages of land and religious or political oppression. Many arrived seeking religious or political freedom, others for economic opportunities greater than those in Europe, and others for the chance to start fresh in the New World. The arrivals before 1850 were mostly farmers who sought out the most productive land, where their intensive farming techniques would pay off. After 1840, many came to cities, where Germania—German-speaking districts—soon emerged.German Americans established the first kindergartens in the United States, introduced the Christmas tree tradition, and introduced popular foods such as hot dogs and hamburgers to America. The great majority of people with some German ancestry have become Am ...

SUMMARY
=======
Western civilization traces its roots back to Europe and the Mediterranean. It is linked to the Roman Empire and with Medieval Western Christendom which emerged from the Middle Ages to experience such transformative episodes as the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution, scientific revolution, and the development of liberal democracy. The civilizations of Classical Greece and Ancient Rome are considered seminal periods in Western history; a few cultural contributions also emerged from the pagan peoples of pre-Christian Europe, such as the Celts and Germans, as well as some significant religious contributions derived from Judaism and Hellenistic Judaism stemming back to Second Temple Judea, Galilee, and the early Jewish diaspora; and some other Middle Eastern influences. Christianity and Roman Catholicism has played a prominent role in the shaping of Western civilization, which throughout most of its history, has been nearly equivalent to Christian culture. (There were Christians outside of the West, such as China, India, Russia, Byzantium and the Middle East). Western civilization has spread to produce the dominant cultures of modern Americas and Oceania, and has had immense global influence in recent centuries in many ways.
Following the 5th century Fall of Rome, Western Europe entered the Middle Ages, during which period the Catholic Church filled the power vacuum left in the West by the fall of the Western Roman Empire, while the Eastern Roman Empire (or Byzantine Empire) endured in the East for centuries, becoming a Hellenic Eastern contrast to the Latin West. By the 12th century, Western Europe was experiencing a flowering of art and learning, propelled by the construction of cathedrals and the establishment of medieval universities. Christian unity was shattered by the Reformation from the 16th century. A merchant class grew out of city states, initially in the Italian peninsula (see Italian city-states), and Europe experienced the Renaissance from the 14th to the 17th century, heralding an age of technological and artistic advance and ushering in the Age of Discovery which saw the rise of such global European Empires as those of Spain and Portugal.
The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the 18th century. Under the influence of the Enlightenment, the Age of Revolution emerged from the United States and France as part of the transformation of the West into its industrialised, democratised modern form. The lands of North and South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand became first part of European Empires and then home to new Western nations, while Africa and Asia were largely carved up between Western powers. Laboratories of Western democracy were founded in Britain's colonies in Australasia from the mid-19th centuries, while South America largely created new autocracies. In the 20th century, absolute monarchy disappeared from Europe, and despite episodes of Fascism and Communism, by the close of the century, virtually all of Europe was electing its leaders democratically. Most Western nations were heavily involved in the First and Second World Wars and protracted Cold War. World War II saw Fascism defeated in Europe, and the emergence of the United States and Soviet Union as rival global powers and a new East-West political contrast.
Other than in Russia, the European Empires disintegrated after World War II and civil rights movements and widescale multi-ethnic, multi-faith migrations to Europe, the Americas and Oceania lowered the earlier predominance of ethnic Europeans in Western culture. European nations moved towards greater economic and political co-operation through the European Union. The Cold War ended around 1990 with the collapse of Soviet imposed Communism in Central and Eastern Europe. In the 21st century, the Western World retains significant global economic power and influ ...
