新西兰最大的城市奥克兰是由一系列的火山喷发物堆积而成的。奥克兰由将近50座大大小小的火山围绕，一部分还能在地表看到，另一部分由于自然或是人类的活动已经埋入了地下或已经被削平无法看出是火山的形状。奥克兰的火山基本都是死火山，但是也有研究表明部分火山处于休眠状态。

伊甸山是奥克兰诸多火山中最高的一座，最高处达到196米，又因为在伊甸山上能够居高临下的看到奥克兰最美的风景，因此伊甸山也是奥克兰的象征，

有一座叫做独树山，因山顶只有一棵松树而得名。据说，独树山从前是有许多树木的，只因当地土著痛恨欧洲人侵占他们的土地，因此把怒火发泄在山上，经常在黑夜偷偷将树木一棵棵地砍死，最后把山上的树都砍光，只剩下山顶的一棵。剩下的一棵也不是刻意保留下来的，只不过是未能将它砍死，也可能是天意，因此独树山无论是其名字、外形或是由来，都可能是世界上独一无二的。
