The funicular of Montecatini Terme is a funicular inaugurated on June 4, 1898 that connects the city of Montecatini Terme with the village of Montecatini Alto with a seasonal service. The tourist connection of the spa town with its historic center was envisaged at the beginning of the 1890s by the engineer Alessandro Ferretti who, having obtained the concession in 1896 , began the fast construction of the building, which lasted only two years. Giuseppe Verdi also attended the official inauguration.
The infrastructure was damaged on 2 September 1944 during the Second World War , due to the operation of sabotage carried out by a group of breakers that caused some mines to shine, causing serious damage. The plant was repaired and reopened in 1949 thanks to the financial contribution of the Municipality of Montecatini Terme and an entrepreneur in the area. During the years of economic recovery, Montecatini became a popular spa destination, with many vacationers frequenting it during the summer season, increasing traffic on the Funicular, increasingly used by tourists who wanted to visit the upper city.
A new plant closure took place between 1977 and 1982 for technical adjustment work, after which the plant was inaugurated on August 8, 1982. The original gears with wooden teeth, left in place, was joined by a new equipment engine and a braking system supplied by Nuova Agudio di Leinì (TO). The works were funded 80% by the Tuscany Region.
The original plant was powered by a steam engine located at the upstream station, replaced in 1921 by an electric drive winch. The exercise is carried out under concession by the Municipality of Montecatini by the family business Funicolare di Montecatini srl, which holds the ownership of the plant and is headed by the entrepreneurs Lido and Simone Cardelli; the funicular covers a distance of almost 1056 meters on a difference in height of 206.47 meters in about 8 minutes and travels at a maximum speed of 2.5 m / s .
