Pilot Butte is a lava dome that was created from an extinct volcano located in Bend, Oregon. It is a cinder cone butte which rises nearly 500 feet above the surrounding plains. Bend is one of four cities in the United States to have a volcano within its boundaries. Portland is the only other city in Oregon with a volcano within its city limits, with Mount Tabor. Jackson Volcano in Jackson, Mississippi, and Diamond Head in Honolulu are the others. The 114.22-acre Pilot Butte State Scenic Viewpoint, presented as a gift to the State of Oregon in 1928, is a Bend icon. Pilot Butte itself is a popular hiking destination with two trails to the summit, each gaining about 490 feet in elevation. The Rogue River in southwestern Oregon in the United States flows about 215 miles in a generally westward direction from the Cascade Range to the Pacific Ocean. The Conde B. McCullough Memorial Bridge, is a cantilever bridge that spans Coos Bay on U.S. Route 101 near North Bend, Oregon. When completed in 1936 it was named the Coos Bay Bridge. In 1947 it was renamed in honor of Conde B. McCullough who died that year. This and 10 other major bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway were designed under his supervision. The Conde B. McCullough Memorial Bridge replaced ferries that had formerly crossed the bay. The bridge is outstanding for its attention to form and detail, and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its design and cultural and economic importance.
