This is Part #3 of our Road Trip thru the State of Oregon. Such beautiful country. A must see if you ever get a chance to be in this part of the United States.
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area encompasses 292,500 acres, the entire length of the Columbia River Gorge. It spans two states, extreme southern Washington and northern Oregon, and runs from the mouths of Sandy River to the Deschutes River. The Columbia River Gorge is unique in both its natural and cultural history, as well as its designation as a National Scenic Area. Step through this beautiful, historic gateway into nature's wonderland of breathtaking geologic wonders, dazzling waterfalls, thick lush thickets of fern, wild rhododendron, and deeply shaded forests of oak.
Here is a brief list of not to miss topics: Multnomah Falls, the Historic Columbia River Highway, Timberline Lodge, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Maryhill Museum, Bonneville Dam Lock and Dam, downtown Hood River, the Fruit Loop in Hood River Valley, wine tasting, a salmon dinner, a hike at Eagle Creek, crossing a bridge at Cascade Locks or Hood River, the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center at Stevenson or the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center at The Dalles, and a rafting trip on the White Salmon River,
Multnomah Falls
Fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain, the flow over the falls varies, usually it's highest during winter and spring.
Multnomah Falls offers one of the best places in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to study geology exposed by floods. Five flows of Yakima basalt are visible in the falls' cliff face.

History
The Hood River near its exit into the Columbia River, 1973
The maps of the Lewis and Clark Expedition show the Hood River under the name Labeasche River after Francis Labiche, one of the expedition's members. In the mid-19th century pioneer era a party of starving travelers resorting to eating dog meat. As a result, the Hood River became known as the Dog River. This name was unpopular. A pioneer resident of the area, Mrs. Nathaniel Coe, was able to change local usage to Hood River, after Mount Hood. The name Hood River appeared on maps as early as 1856. The older Dog River name became attached to a lesser tributary of the East Fork Hood River.[5

TILLAMOOK AIR MUSEUM / HD
In 1942, the U.S. Navy began construction of 17 wooden hangars around the U.S. coastlines to house the K-class blimps being used for antisubmarine coast patrol and convoy escort. Two of these hangars were built at Naval Air Station Tillamook. They were commissioned in December 1942 and served the Oregon-Washington coastal area.
Construction of the two hangars was rushed to completion. Hangar B was the first one built and was completed in August of 1943. Hangar A (which was destroyed in a 1992 fire) was completed in only 27-days!
Stationed at NAS Tillamook was Squadron ZP-33 with a complement of 8 K-ships. The K-ships were 252-feet long and filled with 425,000 cubic feet of helium. With a range of 2,000-miles and an ability to stay aloft for three-days, they were well suited for coastal patrol and convoy escort. Naval Air Station Tillamook was decommissioned in 1948.
Since 1994, the remaining hangar has been home to one of the finest collections of privately owned WW II flying aircraft in the nation and has the distinction of being the largest wooden structure in the world!

Width 296 feet

Astoria Riverfront Trolley, Oregon. July, 2002.
The Astoria Riverfront Trolley is a 3-mile (4.8 km) heritage streetcar line that operates in Astoria, Oregon, United States, using former freight railroad tracks along or near the south bank of the Columbia River, with no overhead line. The service began operating in 1999, using a 1913-built streetcar from San Antonio, Texas.
When Burlington Northern abandoned its freight railroad line from Portland to Astoria in 1996, the city of Astoria purchased about 6 miles (10 km) of BN right-of-way and track in and around downtown Astoria for possible future use, an action known as railbanking. The remaining 92-mile (148 km) section of the Portland–Astoria line was sold by BN to the Portland and Western Railroad in 1997 and kept intact. After Astoria officials learned that a genuine vintage streetcar already in Oregon was not in use and was available for possible lease, they approached its owners and negotiated a five-year lease. The car was ex-San Antonio Public Service Company No. 300 and was owned by the San Antonio Museum of Art, but had been in Oregon since 1990 and had been used on the Willamette Shore Trolley line, in Portland, from 1990 through 1994. In November 1998, Astoria mayor Willis Van Dusen signed the five-year lease, which specified a rent of just $1 per year, and car 300 was moved to Astoria the following month.

Baker Heritage Museum, Baker City, Oregon (2018)
The Baker Heritage Museum is located in Baker City, Oregon. This Museum is well laid out with lots of very interesting and informative displays that cover the history of the region. There is a massive rock collection. As well as a very extensive collection of memorabilia for the 'Paint Your Wagon' movie. This was the only movie that I have seen that has Clint Eastwood singing in it.

Shikata-ganai
In early May 1942, the Japanese-American citizens of the the Hood River Valley, Oregon were shipped by train to internment camps around the United States. While America at that time felt this was an appropriate reaction to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the consensus since then is that it was a racist and unnecessary act. As part of a permanent exhibit on the Incarceration of Japanese Americans at the Hood River County History Museum, this video is narrated by author and educator Linda Tamura, EdD. Providing a brief background to the story familiar to Japanese immigrants to the United States in the early 20th century, the video features rare original film footage and many photos of Japanese Americans living in rural Oregon. It is ultimately a story of courage and perseverance in the face of cultural discrimination.
Written by Linda Tamura and E. Michael Friend. Videography by John Hardham. Original music by Ben Schaffner.
