Chatham-Kent is a single-tier municipality in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Mostly rural, its population centres are Chatham, Wallaceburg, Tilbury, Blenheim, Ridgetown, Wheatley and Dresden. The current Municipality of Chatham-Kent was created in 1998 by the merger of Kent County and its municipalities. The Chatham-Kent census division, which includes the independent Delaware Nation at Moraviantown First Nation, had a population of 102,042 in the 2016 census.

1. Buxton National Historic Site & Museum Chatham
The Buxton National Historic Site and Museum is a tribute to the Elgin Settlement, established in 1849 by Rev. William King and an association which included Lord Elgin, then the Governor General of Canada. King, a former slave owner turned abolitionist, purchased 9,000 acres of crown land in Southwestern Ontario and created a haven for fugitive slaves and free Blacks. King brought 15 of his former slaves with him where they could live a free life. The Elgin settlement was divided into 50-acre lots. These sold for $2.50/acre, with six percent interest, and could be paid over the course of ten years. For many fugitive slaves, the Buxton settlement was the final stop on the Underground Railroad from the United States. Opened in 1967, the museum complex includes the main building with exhibit...

Slavery in the United States was the legal institution of human chattel enslavement, primarily of Africans and African Americans, that existed in the United States of America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Slavery had been practiced in British America from early colonial days, and was legal in all Thirteen Colonies at the time of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It lasted in about half the states until 1865, when it was prohibited nationally by the Thirteenth Amendment. As an economic system, slavery was largely replaced by sharecropping. By the time of the American Revolution , the status of slave had been institutionalized as a racial caste associated with African ancestry. A driving tour through the downtown core of Chatham, Ontario. The population of Chatham proper is just under 45,000. This is now part of the municipality of Chatham-Kent, which includes Wallaceburg, Blenheim, Ridgetown, Wheatley, Dresden and Tilbury.

The city is located just off highway 401, 83 kilometres east of Windsor.

The Retro Suites Hotel in Chatham, Ontario

I spent two nights at the Retro Suites Hotel during my visit to Chatham, Ontario and the surrounding area.

The Retro Suites Hotel is one of the finest boutique hotels in Southern Ontario and it definitely offers a unique experience when it comes to accommodation.

There are a variety of different rooms to choose from depending on the style and theme that you want and the entire interior of the hotel is tastefully decorated with artwork, intricately crafted displays, and a wide range of different exhibits.

No two rooms are the same so that you know you're getting a completely unique experience when you visit the Retro Suites Hotel.

The location is great for exploring the surrounding area, such as checking out some of the different attractions along the historic Underground Railway or heading on a day trip to Point Pelee.

There's a restaurant on site if you're looking for something to eat and the prime location right in downtown Chatham means you can easily walk to one of the nearby restaurants or small shops.

On the property there's also free parking so you don't have to worry about where you're going to keep your car overnight.
