The Kimberley is the northernmost of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is bordered on the west by the Indian Ocean, on the north by the Timor Sea, on the south by the Great Sandy and Tanami Deserts in the region of Pilbara, and on the east by the Northern Territory. The region was named after John Wodehouse, 1st Earl of Kimberley who served as Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1870 to 1874 and 1880 to 1882.

    The Kalumburu Road in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia is a 267 kilometre unsealed road that connects the Gibb River Road to the aboriginal community of Kalumburu on the coast via the Mitchell Plateau. The road, which often becomes inaccessible during the wet season, is suitable for four-wheel drive traffic and facilities are limited to supplies available at the roadhouse at the Drysdale River Station. Kalumburu Road runs north from the Gibb River Road, which it intersects approximately 250km west of Kununurra. It also provides visitors access to Mitchell Falls.

In 1899 in the site was built a wooden church dedicated to Our Lady of Peace, with the help of the Philippine pearl divers. Later, the tower and other modifications were completed in April 1904. In early 1960, the old church of wood and iron needs repairs. The poor state of the church, combined with the fact that the building was too small for the growing community of faithful, led to the decision to build a new church for the city.     Ivan Fredericks , known as Russian Jack , was a goldminer of the Western Australian gold rush in the 1880s. In 1885, while working in the Halls Creek goldmines, he pushed his sick friend in a wheelbarrow 300 km through the Great Sandy Desert to Wyndham, the nearest town with a medical centre. A statue was erected to him in Halls Creek. He is buried in Fremantle Cemetery While he may not be very well known in Russia, Russian Jack is a famous figure in Western Australia.The Peter J. Bridge work entitled Russian Jack claims the actual distance traveled to the nearest medical center was not 300 km but actually closer to 50 km.

    The Boab Prison Tree, Derby is a 1,500 year old, large hollow Adansonia gregorii tree 6 kilometres south of Derby, Western Australia with a girth of 14.7 metres. It had been reputed to have been used in the 1890s as a lockup for indigenous Australian prisoners on their way to Derby for sentencing. There is no evidence that the Derby Prison Tree was ever used for holding prisoners.Kristyn Harman and Elizabeth Grant traced the prison tree myth back to 1948.
