Chiomonte is a comune in the Metropolitan City of Turin in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 60 kilometres west of Turin. The name of the town derives from the Latin Calcis Mons which refers to the calcium-rich soil of the area. Before the 8th century, Chiomonte was located on the south side of its present valley but, after a landslide, the town was moved to its present location. Chiomonte borders the following municipalities: Giaglione, Exilles, Gravere, and Usseaux. Sights include the 15th-century church of Santa Maria. Chiomonte is known for its ice wine and is one of the few areas in Italy producing this type of wine.

1. Sacra di San Michele Sant Ambrogio Di Torino
The Sacra di San Michele, sometimes known as Saint Michael's Abbey, is a religious complex on Mount Pirchiriano, situated on the south side of the Val di Susa in the territory of the municipality of Sant'Ambrogio di Torino, in the Metropolitan City of Turin, Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. The abbey, which for much of its history came under Benedictine rule, is now entrusted to the Rosminians. A special regional law acknowledges it as the Symbolic monument of the Piedmont region. This monumental abbey served as one of the inspirations for the book The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco.

STORYLINE:
Protesters clashed with police near the Italian village of Chiomonte on Thursday after several thousand demonstrators marched towards the construction site of a controversial high-speed rail link.
Police responded by firing tear gas.
Some of the protesters were wearing gas masks and threw the gas canisters back at police.
The new railway line is intended to connect Turin and Lyon in France with a high-speed line passing through huge tunnels in The Alps.
Protesters say the rail link is a useless project and argue it is a waste of public money.
Protesters and local residents also say the proposed line will damage the environment, especially the construction of a 50 kilometre (31 mile) tunnel connecting the Susa Valley with France.
Protests have been going on ever since France and Italy agreed to the project back in 2001.

Filippine, Usa inviano una portaerei in aiuto alla popolazione

Hong Kong (askanews) - La portaerei americana George Washington sta facendo rotta da Hong Kong verso le Filippine per portare aiuto alla popolazione colpita dal devastante tifone Haiyan. E' stato il Pentagono a decidere il rischieramento di una piccola flotta di tre navi che, oltre alla Washington comprende anche il cacciatorpediniere Uss Michael e 2 incrociatori, la Uss Cowpens e la Uss Antietam.
Pensiamo che ci vogliano tra le 48 e le 72 ore per raggiungere le Filippine - ha spiegato il comandante dell'Antietam, Tom Disy - purtroppo le condizioni meteo non sono delle migliori ma andremo il più veloce possibile per arrivare quanto prima a portare il nostro aiuto a chi ne ha bisogno.
La George Washington, ha un equipaggio di 5mila marinai
e oltre 80 tra aerei e soprattutto elicotteri. Alla flotta iniziale si aggiungeranno anche il cacciatorpediniere, Uss Lassen e la nave da rifornimento Charles-Drew, già in rotta verso le Filippine.
Le navi - ha spiegato il Pentagono - con i loro velivoli, potranno fornire assistenza umanitaria, vattovagliamento e aiuti sanitari, in sostegno alle azioni condotte dal governo e dalle forze armate delle Filippine.

Dans le Val de Suse en Italie, les habitants essaient d’empêcher les forages des tunnels, mais ils se heurtent à la répression et à la constante oppression des autorités. Empêcher un projet longtemps préparé et très cher aux politiciens et investisseurs européens s'avère être une tâche difficile !
