Travel the Jemez Mountains Back Roads
So, you're up for a little drive in the mountains... If you head west out of the northern end of Rio Rancho on Hwy 550, within a few minutes you'll hit New Mexico Route 4 and San Ysidro. Route 4 is the 64 mile long main road through the Jemez Mountains connecting the Albuquerque / Rio Rancho area with the Jemez Pueblo, Los Alamos and the Bandelier National Monument.
A few miles north of San Isidro you will find the Canon de San Diego region, with its stunning red rock formations and dirt, rich with iron. The Jemez Pueblo is located here, although tribal laws do not permit photography of the pueblo or its people.
A few miles north of the pueblo, if you're really paying attention, you will see... MORE AT

Jemez Mountain Trail #4 - Jemez Mission Monument
Jemez State Monument is a special place to learn about the history of the Jemez Mountain Trail area. This monument has exhibitions and self-guided tours.
The pueblo was first built in the AD 1500s by ancestors of the modern residents of Jemez Pueblo. The Jemez people lived a typical Southwestern lifestyle for that time. They raised corn, beans and squash in Jemez Canyon along the Jemez River and also up on the nearby mesas. They hunted deer, rabbits, elk, and other game from the forests. They had plenty of water from the Jemez River, and hot springs nearby. In the best of times they may have had a somewhat idyllic life, but the climate could be fickle.
Jemez State Monument consists of the ruins of an ancient pueblo of the Jemez people known as Giusewa and the ruins of a 17th Century Spanish Mission known as San Jose de los Jemez. The mission had a unique octagonal-shaped bell tower. There is a museum and signed trail at the Monument, which is part of New Mexico State Monuments.

Travel Guide New Mexico tm, Jemez State Monument Mountain Trail
The Jemez Mountain Trail twists through time and terrain, contrasting vermilion desert cliffs and snowy alpine peaks, 13 th century stone dwellings and the birth of the Atomic Age in nearly the same breath. Travelers may fish canyon waters at dawn, don snowshoes for a woodland trek, explore ancient Pueblo ruins and view elk crossing an immense volcanic caldera all in the same day.

Early Ride into the Jemez Mountains
Although a little early to go into the Jemez, it was a beautiful day and we thought we would see how bad it was. Turned out to be a little more than we wanted to ride with out heavy GSs. I later learned from a geologist friend, that the dirt in the Jemez Mountans makes the slickest mud anywhere in the world. This is a fact I now know to be a truism. LOL

Here are some great camping spots we discovered...
Jemez Mountains
The Jemez Mountains (pronounced Hay-mez) are a volcanic group of mountains in New Mexico, United States. The highest point in the range is Chicoma Mountain (also spelled as Tschicoma or Tchicoma) at an elevation of 11,561 feet (3524 meters). The town of Los Alamos and Los Alamos National Laboratory adjoin the eastern side of the range while the town of Jemez Springs is to the west. Pajarito Mountain Ski Area is the only ski area in the Jemez. New Mexico State Highway 4 is the primary road that provides vehicular access to locations in the Jemez Mountains.

Majestic Vistas of the Valles Caldera in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico
Majestic views from the Valles Caldera -- the scenic crown jewel of New Mexico -- set to some glorious musical masterpieces. Please note that the photos in this video were taken from 2001-2009, and thus depict the caldera before the destruction of the Las Conchas Fire of 2011, the Thompson Ridge Fire of 2013, and the Cajete Fire of 2016, among others. The Jemez Mountains are still breathtaking, but the landscape looks different now. Therefore, this video should be considered to be an historical document showing the way the Jemez Mountains used to look -- a document of heartfelt love for the sacred Jemez.
The Valles Caldera is a 12-mile-wide collapsed volcanic crater with with lush and expansive high-altitude grassland valleys; towering mountain domes; verdant forests and woodlands; clear, sparkling streams; waterfalls; rivers carved through narrow, tall canyons; natural hot springs; red rock valleys; and some of the most stunning and isolated scenic beauty and wildlife in the Southwest. This crater, or caldera, was formed when the earth collapsed after a catastrophic volcanic eruption took place in the Jemez 1.2 million years ago.
About 80% of these photos are from behind the gates of the Valles Caldera National Preserve (and all are within the rim of the volcanic Valles Caldera).
Featuring the following music: Jupiter from The Planets Suite by Holst; Piano Concerto No. 5, Mvt. II, by Beethoven; 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky; The Tempest by Tchaikovsky; Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni.
