We’ve told you about some of the underrated immigration destinations in Canada, now check out our list of places prospective Canadians should avoid: the poor places, the racist places, the isolated places, the depressing places, the worst of the worst! Naturally, the tiny towns in the woods of Northern Ontario or the southern shore of Newfoundland would be the worst of the worst, but let’s be reasonable. Here are list of towns and cities with a substantial population (at least 5000 residents) that might seem like a decent idea to a prospective immigrant interested in a slower pace of living.

High unemployment? Check.
High cost of living? Check.
Limited access to services? Check.
High property taxes? Check.
Bad weather? Check.
Despite being a small, quaint city just a few hours from Halifax, New Glasgow tops polls of the worst places to live in Canada. How could those 10,000 people stand it? They must have all been born there.
In 2009 New Glasgow ranked 36th out of 208 in StatsCan's crime severity index. The crime rate increased from 2011 to 2012, and was significantly higher than the provincial average.
In 2006, New Glasgow had an unemployment rate of 7.7%. It has decreased since then and, as of the 2011 census, it was 5.7%, or slightly lower than the provincial average.
The cost of living in New Glasgow was estimated by one website to be 4% higher than the cost of living in New York City, but only 30.3% of those reporting say their households earn more than $60,000 Canadian per year (after taxes).
Property tax in New Glasgow was higher than the average in Nova Scotia and significantly higher than Halifax up to and including 2013.
Climate
New Glasgow receives 1212 cm of precipitation per year (that's more than Vancouver).
2. Kitchener - Waterloo, Ontario

Congratulations, Kitchener / Waterloo, you are the hate crime capital of Canada! Despite hosting two universities and a massive tech company campus, the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge tri-city area experiences a high per capita rate of verbal and physical assaults on ethnic, religious and gay minorities. Despite its location in the highly diverse Southern Ontario region, Kitchener has inherited the mantle from the previous main offender, Calgary.
In 2011 Kitchener-Waterloo was surpassed by Peterborough, Hamilton and Ottawa in police-reported hate crimes, however the rate remained at nearly double the national average.
3. Thetford Mines, Quebec
The third of the three rogues’ gallery dwellers is poor Thetford Mines, the heart of Quebec’s asbestos mining region and the winner of the title Most Polluted City in Canada. Despite the overwhelming evidence of the dangerous health effects of asbestos, Canada still mines the dangerous mineral, and the biggest mine in a populated area is in Thetford Mines.
4. Bay Roberts, Newfoundland

Many, many other rural communities on the east coast could make this list, but Bay Roberts appears because it has the highest unemployment rate in Canada, at 17%. Despite the oil, gas, mining and hydro-power booms in Newfoundland, Bay Roberts has somehow managed to avoid the job benefits. This wouldn’t seem so peculiar if Bay Roberts wasn’t just an hour’s drive from money-drunk St. John’s and other rapidly expanding bedroom communities like Conception Bay South.

5. Sarnia, Ontario

Sarnia itself may not be so bad, but its view of and proximity to American heavy industry helps to reinforce the fact that this border town is polluted. It also has an empty downtown and a shrinking population.
6. Saint John, New Brunswick

Long known as the unglamourous milltown cousin to its apostrophic neighbour to the east, St. John’s, Saint John is a dirty, stinky pulp and paper port on the Bay of Fundy. Despite the natural beauty nearby, the city has a declining population and few economic opportunities outside of the paper mills, nuclear power plant, and small university satellite campus. Don’t end up in Saint John when you want to live in St. John’s!

Driving along the Lake Simcoe in Canada
Aurora to Brechin - Ontario Bike Tour #2 - Day 1 of 10
This video summarizes day 1 of my 10 day solo bicycle trip along the shores of Lake Simcoe and Lake Huron in Southern Ontario, Canada. All of the clips in the video were filmed on Friday July 20, 2018.
Starting from the Aurora GO Station I headed north along Walton Dr and Old Yonge St. After St John's Sideroad E I joined the Tom Taylor / Nokidaa Trail which took me into Newmarket. After eventually crossing into East Gwillimbury the trail ended and I joined Concession Road 2 which took me further north. Before that road dead ended, I turned right onto Holborn Road which took me over to Leslie St which I could use to continue riding north. When I crossed Ravenshoe Rd and entered into the town of Georgina., the name of the road changes to The Queensway. While passing through the community of Keswick, I took a detour along Riverglen Dr to get something cold to drink at McDonalds. When I reached Metro Rd, I turned left and then turned left again onto Church St. This brought me to Lake Dr which follows the shoreline of Lake Simcoe. There are some brief segments where the name of the road changes to Pine Post Rd, Osbourne St and Hedge Rd. After reaching the St George's Church (where Stephen Leacock is buried) I then turned and south to bypass Sibbald Point Provincial Park. I continued East along Black River Rd which took me past the Virginia Beach Marina which provides ferry service to Georgina Island. I had to ride south again when I reached Hadden Rd and then rode a long section east along Highway 48. When I reached Riverview Beach Rd I turned and headed North again to continue following the shoreline. The shoreline road here changes names many time from Irving Dr, to Clovelly Cove, to Bolster Ln, to Thorah Park Blvd, to Maple Beach Rd, to Cedarhurst Beach Rd. When I reached Concession Rd 4 I turned and headed East to continue along Beach Rd (highway 23) which took me into the community of Beaverton. This community is within Brock township in Durham Region. After crossing over the Beaver River I continued along Mara Rd and then turned onto Shoreline Rd which eventually changes names to Ramara Road 47 when I crossed over into Simcoe County and Ramara Township at the Lakeshore Swingbridge on the Trent-Severn Waterway. I eventually arrived at my campground at the Point of Mara Resort and Trailer Park.

The bike I used for this trip is a New York made Linear Recumbent Bike which I believe is from around 2004. I carried my gear in 2 Giant Waterproof Panniers, and mounted my tent and sleeping pad on the top of the rack.

Hiking Through Scanlon Creek Conservation Area, Ontario, Canada [Travel Vlog]
Ontario is full of great provincial parks and conservation areas. We wandered around Scanlon Creek Conservation Area in the winter time and had a blast! Scanlon is located about an hour north of Toronto, making it a great little nature getaway. The grounds are beautiful and trails are well marked.

Things you might see in - Lauderdale Point Ontario and the Port Severn Waterway - by HvP
Things you might see in Lauderdale Point Ontario and the Port Severn Waterway. Lauderdale is located 160 km north of Toronto, off Hwy 11, on Sparrow Lake. Lauderdale Point Resort is a quiet resort with all the boating amenities and a private campground.
The Indians called this place Sparrow Lake, Lake of Big Fire for its incredible sunsets. In the fall the Northern Lights are often seen in the north sky from Lauderdale Point.
Sparrow Lake is noted for its great fishing bass, pike, muskie, pickerel and pan fish for the kids.

Simcoe Masonic Lodge
I am not a Mason but was always interested as what might be behind these walls.
This Masonic lodge, the oldest organization in the town of Bradford, was established 1857.
In 1892 a fire destroyed the building and its contents. It was rebuilt here in the early 1900s
Ballawoods Centre, The (Home of Professor W.H. Day)
This home has a fantastic stone chimney and the original kitchen six burner stove.
The property once belonged to Professor W.H. Day.,
one of Simcoe County's most significant figures for his vegetation experiments in the early 1900s.
Stone Farmhouse at Scanlon Creek Conservation Area
This farm house is very unique and the property is natures best back yard.
The farmhouse was build around the 1860s by Mark Scanlon.
The 700 acre conservation area is worth visiting in any season.
Guild of Automotive Restorers, The
The workmanship here is like no other. It shows in all their restored cars.
This is a classic car enthusiast dream.
It is one of the largest and most experienced antique and classic car restoration companies in North America.
The Auld Kirk,
In 1832 when the Scottish pioneers settled here, they build a log structure that was used as a School and church. The present structure is the third one. In 1827 there was a frame building until 1869 when the present brick building was build.

Holland Marsh - Art Janse Pumping Station
We had a very good discussion with a gentleman and a young lady about the operation of the pump house and what could happen if the town of Bradford ever gets flooded.
It was a real eye opener how important this station is.
Bradford West Gwillimbury Wastewater Treatment Plant
The sewage treatment facility was an excellent tour. Very informative with its complex treatment and disinfection system.

Tours of this multimillion-dollar facility is a must see.
