The Kootenay Indian Residential School , operated by the Roman Catholic Church, was opened in 1898 and closed in 1970. Besides the local Ktunaxa Nation, the resort is unusual in Canada in that it is part-owned by two distant bands, the Samson Cree Nation of Maskwacis, Alberta, and the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, of Rama, Ontario.
