The village was named after Sidney Miller, a railroad contractor who helped the people of that area with the introduction of the railroad system. Millerton is part of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area of New York as well as the larger New York-Newark-Bridgeport NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area.
