Family Has Been Sailing Around The World Non-Stop For 9 Years
The Gifford family left their home in Washington in 2008 to sail around the world. They have not stopped since. We met up with them in the summer of 2016 in Noank, Connecticut to learn their story and to see how they all live on a 47-foot sailboat.

Well, we recently spent a weekend there and let me tell you, this turned out to be one of our biggest travel surprises of the year. We arrived in Düsseldorf not really knowing what to expect, but over the course of 72 hours, we discovered this is a vibrant city with beautiful green spaces, a thriving art scene, architecture that’ll make your eyes pop, traditions worth exploring, and more restaurants than we had time for! Now let us take you on a whirlwind weekend tour of Duesseldorf and show you some of the possibilities.
And that’s a wrap for Düsseldorf! We honestly loved our time in the city and we can’t believe it took us this long to visit after so many trips to Germany. If you’re looking for a fun weekend escape that combines the best of urban living and nature, Duesseldorf is the perfect fit, and the food scene will also keep all you foodies happy.

The region is home to the Acadia National Park whose magnificent forests have made it a popular sightseeing destination.Wealthy entrepreneurs were once attracted to the captivating town of Bar Harbour and had their summer homes there. Since then the region has become a little less glamorous but idyllic scenery and picturesque areas such as Jordan Pond are still exceptionally beautiful. As the name Indian Summer suggests, New England’s most well known season dates back to the golden years of the Native American Indian. The warm days at the beginning of autumn were once the most important time of the year for hunting because it was then that the region’s animals grazed prior to the onset of winter. According to legend the strong dark red colour of the leaves symbolized the blood of slaughtered bears. The ‘autumn summer’ was thus closely associated with the Native Indian hunters of old. Even today the Acadia National Park combines all the natural beauty of Maine in a unique way that captivates all those who experience its irresistible charm.

In Canada’s Rocky Mountains, in the centre of the five largest National Parks in the world, lies the idyllic city of Jasper and a gigantic conservation area which covers 20,000 square kilometres, a large ecosystem in which the treasures of nature and the cultural roots of North America’s Native Indians are cherished and preserved.The Jasper Tramway travels into the fantastic mountain world of the Rockies and the grandiose panorama from the summit of Mount Whistler gives an awesome first impression of this majestic mountain region. Whistler Road winds through fields of stones whose barren wastes are like those of a strange planet and the route opens up into a landscape which existed when the earth was in its infancy. Deep into the heart of this magical world the journey leads to the Icefield Parkway past huge forests with tracks leading nowhere, of which only the indigenous Indians and the woodland animals are familiar with the terrain. On a plain which extends 300 square kilometres, the Columbia Ice Fields includes Mount Columbia which rises 4,000 metres toward the heavens. Experienced mountain guides explain this wonder world of nature. Lake Louise is probably the most famous of Canada’s mountain lakes and is located at the foot of the 3,464 meter tall Mount Victoria. The chateau Lake Louise was built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad in1886. Far from civilisation and the hectic pace of city life, it offers a good level of service and comfortable accommodation. Canada’s icy wilderness offers majestic mountains, deep green lakes and mighty glaciers and all the excitement and adventure of Nature’s final frontier.

Filled with over 39 trillion gallons of pure Sierra snowmelt and pushed a mile into the Californian and Nevada skies, Lake Tahoe is the USA’s largest alpine lake and one of the country’s oldest, year-round vacation playgrounds.
Lake Tahoe has forever drawn travellers to its shores, from the Native Americans who call this place Big Water, to the trappers, timber cutters and pioneers who followed.
When you’re ready for a little alpine magic, take the four-hour drive from San Francisco to the sunlit shores of Kings Beach. Set on Tahoe’s northern end, this beach was named after local card shark, Joe King, who used his winnings to develop some of the lake’s earliest lodgings. On the lake’s southern shore, is Pope Beach, where you’ll find another Tahoe institution, Camp Richardson.
From Pope Beach follow the bike path to the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. An open-air classroom for the entire family, the center features fabulous interpretative walks such as the Rainbow Trail.
Nearby, at DL Bliss State Park, follow the spectacular Rubicon Trail into neighboring Emerald Bay State Park. This park is home to the Eagle Falls Trail, a moderate two-mile hike that takes in some of the Sierra high country’s finest views.
