Northeastern Ontario is a secondary region of Northern Ontario which lies north of Lake Huron and east of Lake Superior.Northeastern Ontario consists of the districts of Algoma, Sudbury, Cochrane, Timiskaming, Nipissing and Manitoulin. For some purposes, Parry Sound District and Muskoka District Municipality are treated as part of Northeastern Ontario although they are geographically in Central Ontario. These two divisions are coloured in green on the map. Northeastern Ontario and Northwestern Ontario may also be grouped together as Northern Ontario.   • 1. White Bear Forest Trails Temagami
    The White Bear Forest is an old growth forest, located in Temagami, Ontario, Canada. The forest is named after Chief White Bear, who was the last chief of the Teme-Augama Anishnabai before Europeans appeared in the region. In some parts of the White Bear Forest trees commonly reach 200 to 300 years in age, while the oldest tree accurately aged in White Bear Forest was a red pine that was 400 years old in 1999. The White Bear Forest contains one of Canada's oldest portages, dating back some 3,000 years. Today, more than 17 km of trails access the White Bear Forest. A trail guide is available online at http://ancientforest.org/whitebear.html. The 396 m Caribou Mountain contains a renovated 30 m fire lookout tower that visitors can climb for a small fee.

  • 3. Haliburton Forest and Wild Life Reserve Haliburton
    The Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve Ltd. is a privately owned forest, comprising 300 square kilometres in Haliburton County, Ontario, Canada. It is about 270 kilometres northeast of Toronto, and just south of and abutting Algonquin Provincial Park. Haliburton Forest is a multi-use forest, with attractions such as the Haliburton Forest Wolf Centre, a canopy walk as well as the world's only freshwater tour submarine. Haliburton Forest operates recreation, tourism and education programs year-round. Its forestry operations were the first to be certified by the international Forest Stewardship Council in Canada. Haliburton Forest supports ecosystem based research projects, primarily conducted by the University of Toronto's Faculty of Forestry.
