Heimbach is a town in the district of Düren of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located on the river Rur, in the Eifel hills, approx. 20 km south of Düren. Heimbach has the smallest population of any town in North Rhine-Westphalia. The districts of the city are Blens , Düttling , Hasenfeld , Hausen , Hergarten and Vlatten , which prior to 1972 were villages with their own administration. Between Hausen and Hergarten lies the hamlet of Walbig, and between Hasenfeld and Schmidt is the hamlet of Buschfelder Hof, which formerly belonged to Blens. Eltz Castle is a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Moselle River between Koblenz and Trier, Germany. It is still owned by a branch of the same family that lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations ago. Bürresheim Castle , Eltz Castle and Lissingen Castle are the only castles on the left bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate which have never been destroyed.

The Marksburg is a castle above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is one of the principal sites of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. It has a striking example of a bergfried designed as a butter-churn tower. Of the 40 hill castles between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz the Marksburg was the only one which was never destroyed.

The autumn leaves in the Eifel region are among the most beautiful anywhere. The Eifel, a range of dormant volcanoes, is full of dense forests and rushing rivers. There are plenty of hiking trails for those who want to see it all first-hand.

Germany: Impressions of the Rur Eifel

The Rur - not to be confused with the Ruhr — is a river which flows through parts of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. It is a right (eastern) tributary to the river Meuse. About 90% of the river is in Germany.
The Rur rises in the Hautes Fagnes/Hohes Venn National Park, near the 696 meter-tall Signal de Botrange in Belgium at an altitude of 660m. South of Monschau it flows into Germany, through North Rhine-Westphalia. It flows first through the northern part of the Eifel hills. After 39 km it reaches the Rur Reservoir (Rurstausee), the second-largest artificial lake in Germany.
The Rur Dam (Rurtalsperre Schwammenauel) is a 77.2 metre high dam located in the southwestern part of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It was built in 1939 and impounds the River Rur to form the Rur Reservoir (Rurstausee or Rursee) which is 7.83 km² in area. It lies within the districts of Aachen and Düren.
Heimbach is located on the river Rur, in the Eifel hills, approx. 20 km south of Düren. Heimbach is the city with the smallest number of residents in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Heimbach is a popular town for tourists. The most important objects of interest are the National Parc Eifel, the power house built in style of Art Nouveau, the water supply dam of Rur, the monastery of Mariawald and Hengebach castle.
Mariawald Abbey (Abtei Mariawald) is a monastery of the Trappists. Formally known as the Cistercians of the Strict Observance, located above the village of Heimbach.
The Castle of Hengebach was left a ruin until 1904 when restoration work began. Now restored, the castle is owned and operated as a tourist attraction by the city of Heimbach. The castle itself is located on a rock in the middle of Heimbach. Today it is used as a restaurant and a location for public events.
