Simmerath is a municipality in the district of Aachen, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located approximately 20 km south-east of Aachen, near the border to Belgium. The administrative area was expanded in 1972 and includes the following localities: Dedenborn Eicherscheid Einruhr Erkensruhr Hammer Hirschrott Huppenbroich Kesternich Lammersdorf Paustenbach Rollesbroich Rurberg Simmerath Steckenborn Strauch Witzerath Woffelsbach

1. Marksburg Castle Braubach
The Marksburg is a castle above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is one of the principal sites of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. It has a striking example of a bergfried designed as a butter-churn tower. Of the 40 hill castles between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz the Marksburg was the only one which was never destroyed.

A look around Burg Blankenheim - a DJH German Castel Hostel

This is a little look around the German DJH Youth Hostel Burg Blankenheim which overlooks the village of Blankenheim in Germany. It's a simple but atmospheric castle hostel, close to the Eifel National Park.

The best thing about the Eifel is there is nothing here, says our host at Hostel Blankenheim. Well, for a place with nothing it kept us pretty busy. We found ourselves biking field and forest around the National Park, cheering on classic cars at a world famous racetrack at Nürburgring and racing around a castle that was built as a display of power and wealth but now offers charming hostel accommodation. Check out the video for a taste of the character of Jugendherberge Burg Blankenheim.

The German Youth Hostel Association (DJH Jugendherbergen in Deutschland) has a selection of hostels set in castles. We took a road trip across Germany to check them out and made this series of videos to give you a glimpse inside.

Eifel Nationalpark Rurseen und Umgebung [ 12/17 ] Urftsee und Vogelsang IP

Die Urftstaumauer wurde zwischen 1900 und 1905 erbaut. Sie war damals die höchste Staumauer Europas. (58 Meter)
Der daraus entstandene Urft-Stausee hat ein maximales Fassungsvermögen von knapp 48 Mio m³.
Der See hat zwei Abflüsse.
a) In den Obersee der Rurstauseen
b) Durch den Kermeterstollen (2 km) zum Wasserkraftwerk Heimbach.
In der Hauptsaison (stündlich) und in der Nebensaison (u.a. Zweistunden-Takt) werden auf dem Obersee Rundfahrten durchgeführt. Eine Anlegestelle befindet sich unmittelbar an der Urftstaumauer.
Der Pfad von Rurberg zur Mauer ca. 5 km.

Peep Show in a Cute Rhine Village

The back lanes of this most delightful town on the Rhine take cuteness to Pixy Stix heights — with half-timbered homes reminding me of elves and a stream that babbles like a fairy tale.
