High Bridge at High Bridge Trail State Park, VA 2-13-17
High Bridge Trail State Park is a 1,103 acre Rails to Trails park located in Appomattox, Prince Edward, Cumberland and Nottoway Counties, Virginia. This central Virginia trail is 31 miles in length and the featured attraction is the High Bridge which is 2,400 feet in length and towers 125 feet above the Appomattox River. For more information about this park and trail click here: and here: The section that I hiked on this day was flat and easy hiking. The kind of hiking that you expect from most rail trails. I rate it 1 out of 5 Billygoats.
Directions to the trailhead closest to the High Bridge: From downtown Farmville, VA take 15 Business North/North Main Street/Route 45 North. All of these routes merge in the town. Stay on this road until you cross the Appomattox River. Once over the river take an immediate right on to River Road. Stay on River Road for a few miles and keep your eye out for a big parking lot on the left. There is a power station right beside the parking lot, so you cant miss it. It's a fee area (4 bucks) but that is the parking lot for the most direct route. The trail is right beside the parking lot. Turn left on the trail and go 0.9 miles to the High Bridge. There will be a sign. There are other non-fee areas to get on the trail. If you want a longer ride/hike to the bridge and in a non-fee area, you'll have to check the map... Thanks for watching
Marvel Comics Carriage Drive at Eden Valley Farm 2012
Brandywine Valley Driving Club held a fun drive at Eden Valley Farm outside of Philadelphia. The theme was Marvel Comics Avenger Super Heroes. Each team collected clues and answered questions about Marvel Comics super heroes and the team with the highest score won. Clues were found along the 4.3 mile cross country course. The trail was generously provided by Eden Valley Farm owners John and Penny Hunt who also drove their beautiful Four In Hand carriage. Participants were encouraged to take on an Avenger Super Hero theme and dress the part as well as adorn horses and carriages.
The drive was followed by a glorious summer picnic buffet at the Hunt's residence on Eden Valley Farm and a great time was had by one and all!
There were sixteen teams in all which included three Four In Hand teams. 1. Barbara Walters / Toots Mahre: 2. Michelle Colket / Heather Colket; 3. Clara Levitsky / Natalie Jones; 4. For Sci-Fi and Horror movie buffs, Eden Valley Farm is at the site of the working farm for the former Philadelphia Asylum which was the subject of the horror film Asylum. The former Asylum is now the home of a VA Hospital and an Army Reserve post. The history of the grounds are quite fascinating. When the State of Pennsylvania Shut down the Asylum officials came in and order the place to be vacated immediately as it stood. There are paperwork and files still on desks. Cigarette butts are still in ashtrays, coffee cups are where they were left. Essentially everything was left in place as it stood. Creepy! It is astonishing to see such a large collection of abandoned huge (and I do mean huge) brick buildings.
Originally established as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic, the Pennhurst State School and Hospital—nestled in a wooded area of Spring City, about 25 miles northwest of Philadelphia—opened its doors in 1908.
